Indians sign RHP Politte to minor league deal

CLEVELAND -- Free agent Cliff Politte signed a minor league contract on Wednesday as the Cleveland Indians added another experienced right-hander to their revamped bullpen.

Politte appeared in 30 games last season for the Chicago White Sox. He went 2-2 with an 8.70 ERA, but the 32-year-old had his season shortened by right shoulder inflammation and was released in July.

He underwent surgery in August.

In 2005, Politte went 7-1 with a 2.00 ERA in 68 relief appearances, serving as the primary setup man as the White Sox won the World Series. He has a 22-23 career record with 15 saves and a 4.40 ERA in 330 games with St. Louis, Philadelphia, Toronto and the White Sox.

The Indians had the majors' worst bullpen last season, recording just 23 saves. This winter, the club signed right-handed relievers Keith Foulke, Joe Borowski, Roberto Hernandez and lefty Aaron Fultz to address their biggest offseason need.

Politte will report to spring training camp with the other Indians pitchers, who are scheduled to arrive later this week.

The majority of Clevelands bullpen are former Sox interesting...

I wish Cliff the best of luck making the team. He was so huge for us in 05!!!!!!

i think this is interesting.

last year cleveland went with the approach of filling its bullpen with young untested guys. this year they're going with mostly retreads and older guys.

maybe next year they'll try the novel approach of stocking their bullpen with guys who are good.

Damn. Did it have to be a division team? Good luck to Cliff for at least 143 games this year :)

Not even certain I want to wish him good luck in those. Not because he isn't a good guy, but until the Indians are eliminated, they are dangerous. Wish he was in the NL.

mmhm. same as everyone else.

Good luck, but not to much luck :P

Damn that sucks! I don't want to root against the guy. I like Cliff...

Yeah, even if he is with the Indians, I cant root against Politte I just like him to damn much.

I too like Cliff Politte.

I hope he pitches like he did in 2005.

Except when he pitches against us, I hope he pitches like he did in 2006 :P

Good Luck Cliff :cheers
