June 29, 200718 yr Charlotte wins 4-3 by pulling out 3 runs in the top of the ninth. Broadway went 7 strong. He gave up 3 runs, but none earned. He struck out 8 which is good to see, but he is still having some command issues, walked 4 batters. Sweeney went 2-4 and scored 2 runs. Anderson went 1-4 but "ripped" a single for the go ahead run. Richar did not play for the second straight game. Any word on an injury? Someone can fill in the rest, btw. I'm a lazy bum.
June 29, 200718 yr After two games, Poreda has pitched 9 innings, giving up 5 hits, walking 1, and striking out 10. He's had a much better start to his pro career than McCulloch did. The two hits he gave up tonight were a HR and a double, with the double coming after an error (Piaml now has 7 on the young season), so one of the runs he allowed was unearned.

Any opinion on the THT article that said Poreda was a sure thing to lose 6 MPH off his fastball or shred his arm?
June 29, 200718 yr What article are you referring to? I'm interested in reading this. I find it pretty ludicrous anyone can predict a loss of 6 MPH to a guys fastball. I can see someone predicting arm problems from someone but based on what I've seen from Poreda I don't see any major flaw in his deliver that would make him more prone to an arm injury than any other pitcher in baseball.

June 29, 200718 yr QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Jun 28, 2007 -> 11:29 PM) Any opinion on the THT article that said Poreda was a sure thing to lose 6 MPH off his fastball or shred his arm? I actually didn't read it, but Gomez has been right on in the past. He was adamant that Lincecum was the best pitcher in last years draft based on the videos, and that looks to be holding true. I know for a fact that he doesn't get what everyone was excited about in Nevin Griffin as well.

I can see someone predicting arm problems from someone but based on what I've seen from Poreda I don't see any major flaw in his deliver that would make him more prone to an arm injury than any other pitcher in baseball. The article is here. I actually misquoted slightly, he just says he will lose his mid-90s velocity quickly or shred his arm. The review of Poreda is just this: Slow tempo, bad arm action, awkward mechanics. Poreda has reportedly topped out at 96-97mph, and (based on this video) I have no idea how he accomplishes it. Not with these mechanics... I stopped the animation (frames 32 and 33) for a reason. Maybe it's the aesthetics of it, but those are positions that you don't want to be in. Focus on his front shoulder...not good. In the draft video, Poreda was working 87-90 so maybe this was early in the year before he adjusted his mechanics. That said, I'm willing to bet on two things on Poreda with the certainty that at least one of them will occur: 1) He will lose his mid-90s velocity rather quickly. 2) He will shred his arm. Um, no thanks. Not at 25. Is he Mark Redman, part two? You can see the video of Poreda by looking at the original article at THT.
June 29, 200718 yr Looking at those mechanics broken down, I can't agree with him that Poreda is an injury waiting to happen. However I must say I agree as to being pretty amazed that Poreda throws that hard with that motion. The comparison I would make in that regard is a lefty version of Aaron Harang, who originally threw in the mid 90's, adjusted his mechanics and fell into the upper 80's, and then settled at about 90 to 93, where he is today as a very good pitcher. But that's just based on his arm angle and motion.

It doesn't matter cause any pitcher with the White Sox usually loses mph on their fastball usually anyway
June 29, 200718 yr The article did say the video was early in the year and he was at 87-90, so he could have adjusted his mechanics.
