July 18, 200718 yr Meanwhile, Double-A starter Adam Russell will switch from starter to reliever and could be called up soon. He was 7-8 with a 4.26 ERA in 19 starts Per the trib, the Sox plan on moving Russell to the pen in Birmingham. Russell struggled in his start tonight and hasn't had as good of a season as expected (he has suffered a bit of a dip in velocity from spring training) but I know some people have always projected him much more of a relief prospect than a starters one (I wasn't one of them, but that is mainly because he was so darn impressive in spring training). Plus with Masset hopefully getting starting duties down in AAA for the rest of the season (and I think Masset projects as potentially a better starter, plus starting should be better for Massets long term development, even if he does end up in the pen again) you are basically swapping guys (with one better suited for the rotation, the other for the pen). My guess is we will see the Sox release Buckvich at some point and call up Russell (once he gets a few outings under his belt). I also think you may see Egbert promoted to the pen at one point or another to finish up the season (although I personally hope the Sox plan on using him as a starter eventually because he's really growing on me as a prospect).
July 18, 200718 yr Adam Russell FutureSox Interview Considering the White Sox are so loaded with starting pitching at the big league level, have you ever been approached about switching to the relief role? Yeah, I’ve talked to a few people in the organization about it, since we are so loaded. I may have a future as a long reliever, and that’s completely fine with me. Whatever I can do to help out the team if I ever get to the big leagues, I’m willing to do it. That is something I’ve been approached about doing. But, my first love is starting, so I really want to keep doing that, but I guess I can’t have everything, right? Sometimes it's best to listen to the person instead of speculating.
July 18, 200718 yr Russell looked good in Spring Training, that nice-hard fastball might be better suited for the bullpen in short spurts... I really like the kid and hope he succeeds.
July 18, 200718 yr I dont think you will see Rusell this year in the pen, I think you will see Carlos Vazquez.

July 22, 200718 yr QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2007 -> 10:29 AM) What happened to Russell this year? Is he hurt, or figured out? He was vastly overrated by the organization. His peripherals were always mediocre and they came back to bite him. However, if he can keep throwing 95 out of the pen, he'll be very nice to have.

July 22, 200718 yr He has kind of a 3/4s deliver too doesn't he? Makes his fastball a little deceptive.
