Jose Contreras

Jose was probably on waivers right when the 31st deadline ended and I'm sure he went through untouched. My guess is the Sox rest him and hope he can come back, show some stuff, and allow them to move him in August (odds are still pretty low of that) or hope you can get someone to bite on him over the long off-season (with the Sox possibly having to move him for another guy who may have a bad contract).

Jose will be back in the rotation next year at the worst. His contract is such that we really have no choice but to give him another shot.

Gavin has just pitched himself into another few starts hopefully, and the good news is, if Gavin keeps this up, it makes it vastly easier for the White Sox to trade someone this offseason that there may actually be demand for, i.e. Garland or Vazquez...and use that guy to acquire players to fill our biggest holes for next year (SS by far, followed at a distance by OF).

Balta...lets hope Kenny finds a creative way to unload Jose. I honestly wouldn't even care if it was to get an overpaid, yet still decent outfielder (since we have an extreme need there). Say a Jose Contreras for Shawn Green type deal (with the Mets kicking in a bit of cash).

Green is ridiculously overpaid but stick him in left and he at least isn't horrible production to go with a resigned Jermaine Dye and a young player in CF. I still would hope we could just unload all of Jose's contract though (and Green is just a name I'm throwing out, but just a player that is a bit overpaid yet could still be productive to a team that could use a pitcher and would take the chance on Jose).

I'd do Contreras for Burrell. Pat has only 1 year left on his deal (2008) but he'll be paid $14M for that one season. At least with him you know you'll get about 25-35 HR, a very high OBP and a ~.500 SLG. I know the Phillies have tried to unload his contract in the past but I'm not sure Gillick is desperate enough to do such a swap.

I think he'd at least consider it though and thats exactly the type of deal I'm talking about and yes I'd also do that deal (of course Burrell is kicking so much ass right now that it will be hard for Gillick to sell that deal, even though all of Philly hates Pat).

IMO, I think it's going to be flat out impossible to unload Jose unless the Sox pay at least 1/2 of his remaining contract, which is $10 mil, give or take. Given his performance over the past year, if I was another GM, no matter what contract I was looking to unload, I just wouldn't want him.

Oh, and on just Green...according to press reports earlier this season, the Mets are going to exercise the buyout option in his contract for $2 million, making him a FA this offseason, so the Mets have already dumped him.

For sure we will need to pay at least half of Jose's salary unless we swap overpaid bums with another team.

If we cannot get anything for him in the waiver period, which I highly doubt we will, we should just put him on the DL and let him work through his personal issues (divorce etc) and see what he has in the spring. I still find it hard to believe he doesnt have arm problems or mental issues that a little time couldn't solve. No way does someone go from being one of the top pitchers in the league (which he was first half of 06) to the worst starter in the league seemingly overnight. Something else is going on here, whether its physical and/or mental I don't know but if we cannot get anything for him before the end of the year why not see if he can't be a 5th starter next year knowing most likely we're going to be dealing Garland in the offseason for a SS and OF??

If we just flat out release Jose aren't we responsbile for his salary (or at least part of it) even if he gets picked up by another team? No reason to let him go now unless we get something in return. I agree that the 6 man rotation is at least something to consider for the rest of the season.

The White Sox would have to pay the entire $22+ million remaining on Jose's contract in order to actually release him.
