August 16, 200718 yr this team isn't going anywhere with jim thome in the lineup, as sad as that is to say because he's one of my favorite players on this team, easily my 2nd or 3rd favorite his OBP is extremely high figuring he never hits, like ever, and its only because when guys ahead of him get on, and steal 2nd, they just walk thome to get to a weaker hitter behind him
August 16, 200718 yr This team needs total rebuilding. Just tinkering with the edges...adding a bullpen arm and a corner outfielder won't cut it. Most of the guys we have are either just not very good, old, or injury prone, and others look washed up. Fields, Wasserman, a couple of our starting pitchers, Jenks, and Paulie give some hope, but every team in baseball has 6 or 7 good players. The great teams have 15 good players. We have 15 duds.
August 16, 200718 yr And the really good news is we get to avoid the sweep against Dan Haren tomorrow. If this kid tonight can nail us down, I can't imagine what Haren will do.
August 16, 200718 yr I also like Thome but agree his time has come. The shift is tiresome. He never foils it and he's not whacking home runs. That plus his bad back makes him look like he's on the downside. Not that losing him will help this horrible team. The Sox offense is putrid and losing Thome won't help any. It's amazing all our sluggers are hitting about .260 with decreased homer production. Not good.

We have 15 duds. agreed, and speaking specifically about thome, it's either a nagging injury (which probably is the case), or he's losing his touch due to age (IMO doubtful). either way, since coming back from his stint on the DL, his batting average has continued on a downward spiral (and has never went up since coming back), he was hitting nearly .300 after coming off the DL, now he's hitting a robust .260, nearly 40 points down this started after the allstar break last year and has continued into this year

Thome is one of the only players in our lineup who will ever take a walk, which some people don't understand the value of.
August 16, 200718 yr But soxfan, don't you agree the signs are there that Thome is on the major decline? Bad back, he's not hitting any more home runs than Bonds for goshsakes. That shift has confounded him this year for sure as well. Edited August 16, 200718 yr by greg775
August 16, 200718 yr And yet he's still the most productive offensive player on this god forsaken team. Good luck finding a replacement especially at a $7.66M-$8.5M pricetag like Jim.

Thome is one of the only players in our lineup who will ever take a walk, which some people don't understand the value of. believe it or not, i'm one of the FEW people who doesn't give a rats a$$ about seeing rowand come back, because despite his above average D in CF, his bat is below average (yeah, he's having a career year in the NL) my statement wasn't a retaliation to the trade of rowand for thome, I just think we might need another DH, perhaps putting Dye there and finding another RF next year (or whenever we get rid of Thome) wouldn't be necessarily a bad idea

Bad back, he's not hitting any more home runs than Bonds for goshsakes. That shift has confounded him this year for sure as well. Yes he has declined, but he is still a productive ballplayer. He would also have more homers and a better average if the rest of the team had decided to hit earlier in the season.
August 16, 200718 yr I've been saying that about Thome for months and getting pounded for it. Love the guy, but he ain't helpin. We didn't need anymore power hitters to begin with, much less one with no speed whatsoever.

August 16, 200718 yr QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Aug 16, 2007 -> 12:08 PM) LOL. It's like I just put up the Bat Signal... Ignorance has that effect on people.
August 16, 200718 yr Yeah Thome really sucks. If Josh Fields were putting up the exact same numbers, he would be treated like God on this board.
August 16, 200718 yr QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Aug 16, 2007 -> 01:38 PM) But of course: if I don't worship Thome, I'm "ignorant." Pfft. I think that perception has more to do with Rowand. Thome made us much better last year and this year than Rowand could've.
August 16, 200718 yr This is really a funny place. It was just a couple of months ago that Thome supposedly walked all the time because Paulie sucked. Now Thome is done. Jim Thome is and always has been one of the streakiest hitters in baseball. Next week or so when he gets hot again it will be interesting to watch the backpedaling.
