August 20, 200718 yr was Frank Thomas a good signing for the Blue Jays this year? Is he giving them enough production from the DH slot? .258 AVG 19 HR 21 2B 73 RBI 66 BB 50 R .822 OPS what do you guys think?
August 20, 200718 yr Author QUOTE(knightni @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 12:34 PM) Rhetorical, right? No, I honestly feel it's borderline. If he gets on one last hot tear and rattles off 10 homers to close the year and ends with a .270 average it'll be a good year, but if he stays at .255-.260 and doesn't get much more pop it'll be a real disappointment. Obviously the days of him hitting anything over .275 are far behind him.
August 20, 200718 yr QUOTE(knightni @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 10:39 AM) 5.56 mil a year for those stats isn't bad. What contract are you reading? Frank Thomas and the Toronto Blue Jays finalized an $18.12 million, two-year contract Friday. The Blue Jays reached a tentative deal with the 38-year-old designated hitter Wednesday night and spent Thursday working on drafting an agreement. Thomas gets a $9.12 million signing bonus that is payable in January, a $1 million salary next year and $8 million in 2008. The deal includes a $10 million vesting option for 2009 that would become guaranteed if Thomas has 1,000 plate appearances in the next two seasons or 525 plate appearances in 2008.
August 20, 200718 yr Author QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 12:47 PM) So then you're counting him as a $12.56 million player next year? I'm not counting him as anything. I don't know how to figure the salary, personally. The 5.56 number comes from espn's player page.
August 20, 200718 yr QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 12:46 PM) 1 mil salary + 4.56 signing bonus (9.12 split over two years) = 5.56 mil Thomas got the full $9.12M signing bonus in January of '07. You have to look at it as either $10.12M this year or $1M, there is no middle ground.
August 20, 200718 yr Considering he is 9th place in walks is telling you the pitch selection he is getting, EVEN in the twilight of his career.
August 20, 200718 yr QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 05:49 PM) I don't know how to figure the salary, personally. What's 18 million divided by two? I can't find my calculator.
August 20, 200718 yr Author QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 01:57 PM) What's 18 million divided by two? I can't find my calculator. It's not that simple. His official salary listed this year is 1 million dollars.
August 20, 200718 yr QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 07:13 PM) It's not that simple. His official salary listed this year is 1 million dollars. Yeah, but for all intents and purposes, he's costing the Toronto Blue Jays organization 9 million per year.
August 20, 200718 yr Before some else brings up Thome, I will. lol AVG .264 | HR 20 | RBI 63 | OBP .413 | SLG .502 Sal 15 mil not sure what he's costing the sox though.
August 20, 200718 yr QUOTE(rangercal @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 03:32 PM) Before some else brings up Thome, I will. lol AVG .264 | HR 20 | RBI 63 | OBP .413 | SLG .502 Sal 15 mil not sure what he's costing the sox though. Somewhere around $11 million I believe. Edit, just checked Kalapses salary sheet. He is making $14MM a year and Philly is paying $5.5 Edited August 20, 200718 yr by SoxFanForever
August 20, 200718 yr His slugging is way down. More importantly, he's been awful against right handers: .236/.349/.398/.747 He has more than three times as many atbats against right handers than left handers so I would say that's not very good.
August 21, 200718 yr Its about in line with what is expected of Thomas anymore. He isn't going to be putting up the sexy batting averages anymore, but he will hit some homers, and take some walks.
August 21, 200718 yr QUOTE(rangercal @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 03:32 PM) Before some else brings up Thome, I will. lol AVG .264 | HR 20 | RBI 63 | OBP .413 | SLG .502 Sal 15 mil not sure what he's costing the sox though. $8.5M a year for a .915 OPS? I'll take it.

Not sure where you're getting those numbers from. When I look at ESPN, he's batting an awesome .300/.463/.591/1.054 against righties. Basically twice as many at bats against righties as lefties.

Basically twice as many at bats against righties as lefties. dunno what you are looking at, but against righties he is batting .236/.348/.399/.747 in 313 at bats. Against lefties he is batting .330/.436/.637/1.073 in 91 at bats.
August 21, 200718 yr QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 08:08 PM) $8.5M a year for a .915 OPS? I'll take it. You can justify it if he were a free agent pickup I suppose.
August 22, 200718 yr We he'e 2 for 3 with with 2 homers and 2 RBI's tonight. Batting average up to .260 right now. It seems like when he gets one, he gets another one in the same game, then will go for a while without one.
August 22, 200718 yr QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 02:13 PM) It's not that simple. His official salary listed this year is 1 million dollars. So then the Blue Jays paid Frank a $9 million signing bonus to take the winter off in 2007. Don't let a signing bonus misguide you in his average contract. The money is accounted for somwhere. Let's say the Sox signed A-Rod to a 5 year contract and game him $125 million as a signing bonus in 2008 and $5 mill per year for the next 5. Would he really be considered underpaid by you when compared to other SS's since he's getting $5 mill. per year. Would you say KW is a genius for signing A-Rod for Uribe money? Bob
August 22, 200718 yr QUOTE(rangercal @ Aug 21, 2007 -> 06:51 PM) You can justify it if he were a free agent pickup I suppose. I'm not trying to justify anything.
August 22, 200718 yr QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 21, 2007 -> 11:10 PM) I'm not trying to justify anything. you pretty much showed how you feel when you said " I'll take it." I just could not agree, that's all.
