kapkomet
Wow. The Re-pube-licans are self-imploding. I wasn't kidding when I said the Dems would get a super majority (my definition is a filibuster proof senate). It's going to get ugly for Re-pube-licans, as it should. They have TOTALLY abandoned "conservative" principles.
Rex Kickass
But it means nothing. It's Mississippi. The state run by Hailey Barbour. I just don't see much to get worked up about here. The timing is odd though, I must say.
Rex Kickass
Or maybe not so curious after all.... Turns out that if you leave the Senate by the end of the year, you are not beholden to the new ethics rules which prevent sitting Congressmen from becoming lobbyists for two years after you leave office. kapkomet
I really think there's more to it - as all the Re-pube-licans are resigning en masse. And it's not just for lobby money.

Well, there is one other part to it...a lot of them haven't been in the minority for a long time, and they're looking at being even more solidly in the minority come the next election, so they really won't be able to do a lot of the things they'd want to do. It takes a different type person to be an effective representative from the minority when your priority goes from being enacting your legislation and earmarks to trying to prevent the majority from doing the same thing, and a lot of the retirees just don't want to deal with it. Balta1701
So, like a couple months back, Larry Flynt started dropping hints that his magazine had something explosive on someone in the Senate, and at least casually suggested it was a Republican. I doubt it's true, but hey, this is the internet, and the Filibuster to boot, so I can rumor-monger all I want. BigHeadDC, which as far as I can tell is one of those online gossip rag type places (and which has already botched "exclusives" in the past) , is trying to connect Lott's resignation to Flynt's statement through some male escort. Rex Kickass
Hey look, this is kinda making problems for Mississippi. Turns out state law says that if a Senator resigns in MS during a year that is not an election year, the governor must call a special election and the seat will remain vacant until this special election happens. So if Trent Lott resigns in 2007, MS has to have a special election (which may end up costing the RSCC a lot of money that they don't have.) If Trent Lott resigns in 2008, Barbour gets to appoint a Senator to hold the spot until the November election - BUT Lott no longer gets a non-stop ticket to K street and instead has to wait two years before he can become a lobbyist. Interesting twist indeed. If the resignation is not much at all to do with getting into a lucrative lobbying gig under the wire, as Lott suggested today, then he should have no problem holding off on resigning until january for the sake of the Mississippi GOP. If he decides to go forward with the resignation in 2007 and knowingly screw over his party in MS, then it's probably safe to say it's simply a go-for-the-money move. The pending Flynt "bombshell" notwithstanding, that is. It would be something if it was Trent he's been alluding to, no matter what the nature of the scandal is. NUKE_CLEVELAND
I think Romney said it best. The Republican Party needs to clean up its own house. I totally think it's time for a lot of these old hands to step aside and allow some new blood to come to the forefront with some fresh ideas on things. The party's message of "Elect us or the terrorists will get you" is not going to work anymore. I have also read many articles that said that many economic conservatives stayed home back in 2006 because they are fed up with runaway federal spending and may well boycott the '08 election as well unless someone steps up with a workable way to get a handle on it. Rex Kickass
The person this really sucks for is the MS voter. He/she putt Lott back in for a six year term last year. If Lott was so bored with the Senate then, why did he want re-election?

If he knew in advance how 2006 was going to go down at the polls, I'm sure he'd have retired earlier. I think Rove and the WH put a ton of pressure on most senior GOP legislators to all run for re-election regardless of how burned out they were. Karl had his math after all, you know.
