April 25, 200817 yr QUOTE (hi8is @ Apr 24, 2008 -> 11:36 PM) instead of uribe at 2nd.... call up fields and put him there? flame on - flamers. ive been saying for weeks id like to see fields get a shot at 2b in AAA...dont think you can automatically put him there at the bigs...gotta see if he can be at least adequate there...but yeah i got flamed for saying it before too
April 25, 200817 yr Why do people want to just throw Fields around the field so much? Let's have him play 1B, LF, RF, 2B...he's a 3Bman, he's not that good there yet, and he's not going anywhere. Let's bury this thought.
April 25, 200817 yr I'd like to put crede there if I were going to put one of the two- which I would not. We aren't going to resign the guy and fields needs to get his licks at 3rd. I don't care if he is only average while joe is one of the best. Edited April 25, 200817 yr by max power
April 25, 200817 yr how 'bout no, scott... seriously, he can't even play his primary position that well (YET!), let alone a middle infield position. no thanks, i'll take any of the other three options
April 25, 200817 yr it's been wishful thinking by a lot of people on the site but it's not going to happen.
April 25, 200817 yr i see very little harm at putting him there for 1 month in AAA just to see if he can play an adequate 2b...if he cant he goes back to third....if he can i think the upside for this team could be pretty big, and is worth sacrificing 1 month of defensive development at 3b he played SS a few times last year for charlotte...and its not an unprecedented move, it has happened before for a 3b to move to 2b.....why not at least give it a shot at AAA to see what we may have? April 25, 200817 yr QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 24, 2008 -> 11:46 PM) Fields in LF, Swisher in CF, Quentin in RF, Crede at 3B....in 2009? Why not? its not a terrible idea, but thats a huge if....odds are crede wont be back...but even if he is, where does dye go? DH? Traded? either he or thome would have to be dealt
April 25, 200817 yr BTW we should try out Alexei Ramirez as a backup catcher just to see what we have, he can't be any worse than Toby Hall

Traded? either he or thome would have to be dealt My guess would be that if we were to go with that solution (Crede resigned and Fields in LF) Dye would be traded. IMO, its not a horrible move... puts Quentin in his natural position, keeps Crede's glove/clutch bat, and lets Fields' bat into the lineup. The team would have a very young and talented outfield (at least offense-wise) that could be together for a very long time. ...But i wouldn't bet any money on this being the 2009 Whitesox.
April 25, 200817 yr It would be nice to put that money dye is making toward a shortstop for next year.

April 25, 200817 yr the article about Fields on sox.com says a LOT about him playing "wherever they need him" and they mention that a few times... maybe they're considering it?

I highly doubt "wherever they need him" includes 2B. Outfield, yeah, but he'd be a brutal second baseman. EDIT: OR the next Jeff Kent. That's doubtful though. Edited April 25, 200817 yr by Steve9347
April 25, 200817 yr Just curious, who would people prefer to have at $12 million, Joe Crede or Jermaine Dye? And furthermore, which contract would you find more favorable, the one that goes 2 years or the one that goes 4-5? I'm not going to say resigning Crede would be terrible, but I'll say that I'd strongly disagree with it.
April 25, 200817 yr It would be nice to put that money dye is making toward a shortstop for next year. Honestly, I'm starting to love Orlando Cabrera and I would be happy with him as our shortstop for a while. He just brings so much to this team.

I'm not going to say resigning Crede would be terrible, but I'll say that I'd strongly disagree with it. If it wasn't for the years I would say crede. He is got the glove and clutch edge. Jermaine is the better hitter overall but he looks to slow down further still in right. On top of that we have better defensive options in quentin and swisher in right. Unfortunately I wouldn't be surprised if crede makes even more than that if he continues to have this career year. Edited April 25, 200817 yr by max power
April 25, 200817 yr QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 25, 2008 -> 01:40 PM) Just curious, who would people prefer to have at $12 million, Joe Crede or Jermaine Dye? And furthermore, which contract would you find more favorable, the one that goes 2 years or the one that goes 4-5? Thats an interesting question. My answer would depend on how Quentin does the rest of this year as well as how Fields does in whatever time he gets up here this season (if any). If Quentin shows that he is for real (which I think most of us here believe he is at this point) I believe that he can be a perfectly fine replacement of Dye... he might be a little bit of a downgrade with the bat (at least average-wise) but he would be a big step up on the defensive side. With this option we could resign Crede and maybe even Cabrera and have an outfield of Fields (if they'll switch him to the OF) - Swisher - Quentin. To me, that is a very good looking team (you've got great defense on the left side of the infield and a really young hard hitting outfield). The other option includes keeping Dye but getting rid of Crede, so you'd end up with the same OF as this year and inserting Fields at 3B (again, possibly being able to keep Cabrera at SS). This would be fine if Crede becomes too expensive or if Quentin doesnt look like a replacement possibility for Dye's bat as the season goes on. But I just dont seem to get as excited about this option as the other. I think Dye is getting a little too old for the field and he is more and more likely to have all kinds of little injuries through the season that will keep him from being super-effective through another multi-year contract. anyways, those are my gut feelings on the matter... I think I like option A more (assuming that Quentin continues to look so promising). Edited April 25, 200817 yr by southsidehawkeye
