2009 College Baseball

Just came home from the Florida at UCF baseball game and now I know why the Gators suck. Their players are small. My high school team back in 99 was just as big as UF.

I wished UCF played big name teams more often at home. It's been awhile since I've gone to a college game and it's a pretty fun atmosphere.

Noles took 2 of 3 from Clemson on a walk off home run from Mike McGee. Should have swept, but yesterday the umps ruled a home run that would have been a walk off foul. Even the Clemson players were walking off the field. They actually went up to Tapley after the game and said they knew it was fair.

After watching UCONN get swept in three straight games by West Virginia, I’ve realized there’s something I hate more then the sacrifice bunt, pitchers who throw around it. He’s giving you an out, kid! Unless, there’s a runner on third there’s no powerful need for you to do anything but throw it over the plate!!!

Mizzou took 2 of 3 against top 10 A&M. After an awful non-conference season, the Tigers went 3-3 at Texas and now vs the Aggies. Very solid.

Fullerton did more of there thing, but have a tough couple series ahead of them and have had very few home games the past 2-3 weeks.

Miami takes 2 of 3 at previously unbeaten Virginia.

ACC is going to be really tough so to win a road series is huge. Getting down to 8 teams for the ACC tournament this year is going to be fun to watch. Duke and BC have really improved and the only teams that dont have a real chance to make the ACCT is Va Tech and Wake Forest. Probably could throw Maryland in there too.

Latest Baseball America Rankings have Fullerton as the #1 team in the country. They have a tough road set coming up with 3 @ UC Riverside (borederline top 25 team, probably about 27th in the country) and than a midweek series @ Arizona State (#3 in the country). Clearly the Titans continue to have one of the toughest schedules in the country as they have already played a s***ton of ranked opponents. I'm stunned they are doing as good because I still think there lack of a veteran in the rotation will bite them in the butt but they are one talented ass squad and incredibly young.

What does the Big West look like this year? I know Irvine made a CWS run a couple of years back and Long Beach is usually pretty good too. Playing all these big games is kinda weird unless Fullerton is trying to get the players some experience before regionals start up.

It is why Fullerton consistently is amongst the top teams in the country. They are an incredibly young team, but they consistently schedule tough out of conference opponents and other opponents love scheduling Fullerton because there style of play puts a ton of pressure on defenses and in general is very beneficial for the team that plays them. The Big West isn't down, UCI and Fullerton are both legitimate top 10 contenders. Long Beach State is typically a powerhouse as well (Longoria, Tolowski, Jared Weaver, etc), but is in a down year. Santa Barbara and Cal Poly have emerged though and Riverside is solid as well. A case could be made for the Big West having 5 top 25 teams but my guess is they'll at least get 4 into the tourney.

I also am a firm believer that our schedule is why Fullerton makes so many trips to Omaha. The team isn't afraid of other opponents and doesn't just mash up on other weaker schools (ie, what FSU has done the past couple of years). Big West baseball is a thing of beauty, imo. Plus the nature of our location and rivalries pretty much assure that we'll play UCLA, ASU, Arizona, USC, Stanford, and San Diego and all of those schools are very strong baseball schools.

One other thing is that Fullerton is such a respected program (easily one of the 3 best programs in the nation, and when you factor in the budget limits Fullerton has compared with the other top programs, I think they are the best run program in the country) so they know that they can afford some out of conference losses and still get the nod in the tournament field (assuming they put up a pretty good team). The bottom line is, you look at the schools history and its unheard of the type of numbers they put up year in year out (in terms of wins, tourney births, omaha trips, etc). And of course I'm a bit bias as an alum.

Not cool, by the way... My buddy was credited with the loss in that game, after giving up a run in 2.1 IP

Miami loses their first series of the season against GT 2 games to 1.

GT hit 8 HRs this series and that was really the difference. Close series but we suck at hitting right now. Struck out 14 times and had only 7 hits in a 6-4 loss Saturday. Left 15 on base today in a 6-2 win. We're just not finding those 2 out hits. No reason to think we're going to start getting those but if we do then I think we're going to be pretty good.

Bring on the Noles!

2 interesting weeks coming up here. UF tomorrow, Miami this weekend, UNC next weekend.

Fullerton took 2 out of 3 from a ranked Riverside squad on the road and now get to play 2 games against #3 ASU and 3 games against #8 UCI. Talk about a tough stretch. I believe they play UCSB after that, who just dropped out of BA's top 25 but is right at the cusp still.

Miami will be honoring the 1999 national title team that beat Florida State this weekend when the Noles visit Coral Gables. Knowing how much Morris and Martin hate each other, this might be the start of a very interesting weekend...

Noles win 3-2 in a rain shortened game. Mini Posey came up big in a tie game in the top of the 5th with a HR game when everyone knew the rain was coming.

Fullerton won there first game against ASU. Going for the two game sweep tonight :)

Fullerton is on ESPNU tonight.

Sweet. Should be a great game for those not familiar with college baseball. Fullerton is going up against one of there big rivals and a top 10 team in UCI.

Noles lead 4-0 in the top of the first. UM's starter is out with the bases loaded, 2 outs. He was the ERA leader in the ACC.

Edit: 13-3 in the 8th. We have hit 7 HR. Some dumbass kid just threw a foul ball back on the field after we hit it. What an idiot. The fans cheered it on too.

Miami has an amazing stat going right now. 39 of the last 44 runs allowed have come via the home run.

Wow, what a choke job. D'vo sucks. All hype.

We've been sucking as of late so that was a much needed win.

We got raped today. Onto another series loss for next weekend.
