February 6, 200917 yr Just heard on ESPN radio that JR had been rumored to be the buyer or part of a buying group of the troubled Phoenix Coyotes NHL franchise. The report said he backed out after seeing their books (a projected $45M loss this year, I believe) My thoughts are: It makes sense with his recent major investment in the area with the Glendale ST facility. Does his backing out free up cash for the Sox that he may had potentially earmarked for the Coyotes purchase?
February 6, 200917 yr The Coyotes have really issues with their lease, and unless they can get that fixed they'll probably go under in a few years. Wouldn't think this would change much on the Sox's end in regards to payroll though.
February 6, 200917 yr This is JR were talking about. He doesn't even pay luxury taxes for the bulls state. This ain't changing anything.
February 6, 200917 yr JR and friends make a ton of money off the Bulls. A ton, yet he won't pay a luxury tax even though he's making profit. I really wonder why its every dime that comes in supposedly goes out with the White Sox, but he won't come near that with the Bulls. Anyway, not trying to buy the NHL team has zero effect on White Sox money.
February 7, 200917 yr QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 04:29 PM) I want Phoenix to relocate to Hartford Bring back the Whale! Send Phoenix to Carolina, move Carolina back to Hartford. Screw Winnipeg.
February 7, 200917 yr QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 04:29 PM) I want Phoenix to relocate to Hartford Bring back the Whale! The reason they moved the first time was because Hartford sucks. Sadly, Hartford still sucks.
February 7, 200917 yr Any franchise who plays in "Jobing.com Arena" deserves to fail. Ok, now on a more serious point.. via Wikipedia: On December 23, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported that the Phoenix Coyotes team is receiving financial assistance from the league in the form of advances on league revenues. The Coyotes have pledged all of their assets to New York company SOF Investments LP to cover an estimated debt of $80 million. The team has lost an estimated $200 million since 2001 and may lose $30 million this season. One of the team's owners, Jerry Moyes' principal source of revenue, Swift Transportation is also in financial difficulty. ESPN reported that the league has become involved with the operations of the Coyotes and their revenues. The NHL apparently wants to work with the city of Glendale which owns the arena and receives revenues from the team. ESPN also reported that Moyes wants to sell his share of the team and that Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer is a possible interested purchaser. If a team is loosing THAT much money, is it more reasonable to maybe either relocate or fold? That's a LOT of money in 8 years.
February 7, 200917 yr QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 10:14 PM) What is the only former WHA merged franchise to have never moved? Answer: The Edmonton Oilers
February 10, 200917 yr QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 08:58 PM) Send Phoenix to Carolina, move Carolina back to Hartford. Screw Winnipeg. Oh Yeah, well Winnipeg says Screw You knightni.
February 10, 200917 yr QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 10:25 PM) Any franchise who plays in "Jobing.com Arena" deserves to fail. Ok, now on a more serious point.. via Wikipedia: If a team is loosing THAT much money, is it more reasonable to maybe either relocate or fold? That's a LOT of money in 8 years. The only way they can stay in Phoenix is if they can re-negotiate that lease.
February 10, 200917 yr QUOTE (supernuke @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 12:12 PM) Oh Yeah, well Winnipeg says Screw You knightni. HA! I knew that would bring a Winnipeg-ger out of the woodwork.
February 10, 200917 yr QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 10:02 PM) The reason they moved the first time was because Hartford sucks. Sadly, Hartford still sucks. The Whalers will be back in the NHL eventually. For a team to have the following they still have despite being gone for 10 years and never having been very good to begin with speaks a lot about them. I may be 10 years down the road, but I am confident the Whalers will one day be back in the NHL, especially with this arena the city is proposing to build for UCONN basketball.
