July 16, 200322 yr Rumor has it they want Kelton, Wellemeyer, Cruz, Pie, and Beltran for Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton. Are they serious? That's ridiculous to ask in return for an old, decent centerfielder and an on and off 3rd base potential good player.

July 16, 200322 yr They must think that they are dealing with Kenny Williams again. That is a lot of good potential for a 40 year old, and a guy who never has lived up to the hype.
July 16, 200322 yr Author Ya, i put Kelton twice...the other guy is Felix Pie...he was in the futurestars game
July 16, 200322 yr I'd love to see them do it though. Wipe out a big chunk of their farm system for a centerfielder whom could potentially retire after this season and a disappointing third baseman whom has never been anything but potentially good. I guess you kind of have to take what you can get when every team keeps stealing your potential free agents or deciding not to let them leave!! I love watch the Cubs squirm. Buncha loser!!!!!!!!
July 16, 200322 yr Author My guess is that is a list of players they like and would like to pick from. I think it was Rozner's column (according to Score) that said they want all of them, not just a few of them.
July 16, 200322 yr Only KW would give up that much. I still cringe at the thought of losing Webster, Rupe, and Pacheco, or whoever it turns out to be for Everett.
July 16, 200322 yr If the Cubs get Aramis Ramirez they get nothing but trouble. He's potentially a great hitter but he has many "downsides." He has a surly personality and tends to sulk like a litte kid when things don't go his way. He is a statue at third base, it often appears that he is refusing to bend all the way down to pick up a ground ball. He can't go to his right very well at all, he is nearly useless fielding the hard smash down the line. Last year he got hurt in a brawl against the Brewers, badly twisting an ankle. He was no good for the rest of the year. The Pirates have a history of royally kissing the ass of a potentially good young player. They did it with Barry Bonds, who made Jim Leyland of all people nearly snap out. This guy is no Bonds.

July 16, 200322 yr Cubs have a farm system? I thought it was a AAA hype machine i hate to say this, but their farm sytem of players are a little better then ours at this moment.
July 16, 200322 yr Cubs have a farm system? I thought it was a AAA hype machine i hate to say this, but their farm sytem of players are a little better then ours at this moment. As of now, that's questionable. A dozen or so of their pitching prospects have injuries. I'm not high on Pie at all, makes me shudder when a scout says "5 tool talent". More often than not, they're wrong.
July 16, 200322 yr Author Their organization prospect ranking is always ahead of the Sox I'm beginning to think 5 tool talent means the guy does have all 5 of those tools - no glaring weakness in any of them. The problem is, that player isn't special in any of those areas. He's just above average or solid. I think 5 tool prospect can't be equated to star because it's thrown around too much

Cubs are in a pretty desperate situation so give them high stakes and hope they call back with a bit lower offer thats still damn good. Damn, hearing that offer, I'd be more then willing to move a few of our guys that could help the Cubs for all those prospects.

More often than not, they're wrong. Pie has incredible hype, but until he puts the numbers to back it up at a higher level, I'll hold judgement. I feel the same way about Anthony Webster. Cruz and Wellmeyer are two guys I'd want. I also think Kelton would be a really good pickup for an AL team. He's a very good athlete and could play LF/DH and play left field very well, imo. He could also play first. If the Sox are out of it, get on the horn and try to give them Everett (To play center) and give them Alomar for 2nd. Ask for Cruz and Kelton and i'd be happy. Cruz is way better then Ring and Kelton to me is more advanced then anyone we gave up in the Everett deal. I'd also try to get Wellmeyer or Beltran and see what they'd say. Insert Cruz into the rotation, Kelton into left to replace one of our outfielders (They are working him in center right now; The Cubs) and Wellmeyer or Beltran as relievers with closer potential. We get two power arms and a guy that could develop into a .300 plus hitter. I'd see Kelton filling out real nice in the two hole.
July 16, 200322 yr Jason, I don't disagree with anything you said in the above post, but I gotta say that it blows my mind when we discuss trading Everett before the Rangers have even made their Christmas selection yet. Does this mean that you think we overpaid for him? That we were taken to the proverbial cleaners? I thought I was the only one here who felt that way. I've heard of "flipping" a piece of real estate before closing, so I guess we could do it with Ev also.

July 16, 200322 yr i would love to trade lee and buerle to sd for a handful of pitching prospects. I'm glad you aren't running the team then.
