lostfan
I'm surprised there's been no discussion on this. Iran overturned the espionage charges on her and gave her a suspended 2-year sentence, and let her leave Iran if she wants to. The whole thing reeks of a PR stunt on their part though, from start to finish. It's like they deliberately chose a random person to throw some BS charges on so they could overturn it later and look like they were sending a goodwill gesture to the United States. I really didn't ever think they were actually going to hold her.
Texsox
Interesting theory, have you seen anyone with more information make that claim? I'd love to read about that.
lostfan
I have no information to base that on, just what I think is an understanding of how their government thinks. Now the ball is kind of in our court and they expect us to do something, I read it as a response to Obama's overtures a couple months ago.
Texsox
QUOTE (lostfan @ May 12, 2009 -> 08:34 AM) I have no information to base that on, just what I think is an understanding of how their government thinks. Now the ball is kind of in our court and they expect us to do something, I read it as a response to Obama's overtures a couple months ago. It certainly seems plausible. I'm surprised no one else is talking about that.
southsider2k5
I have said that I believe we have been dealing through the backdoor with Iran for a few years now, based on how the violence in Iraq just sort of stopped out of no where. I don't have any evidence, just a feeling.

lostfan
It's kind of unavoidable actually since there's areas of mutual national interest, and it would've been sooooo helpful to engage them right after 9-11 when we had their attention (and they were actually being helpful) but they decided to go the exact opposite route and publicly call them the enemy. I'm not sure what the point of that was, since everyone already knew that.

bmags
SS2k5, I'd certainly find that true, but Iran is likely acting out of own self interest too. Lowering the violence certainly made leaving Iraq more practical for the U.S. And once we leave, no country has more power in Iraq right now than Iran. Notice how quickly we went quiet about their nuclear program? It comes up from now and again, but nothing like it did when Iran was leading the violence in Iraq. Like I said, nothing in fact to base this on, but I think those two things are connected.

I recently saw a History Channel show where FDR was secretly working with Churchill, before he was in charge, about how to publicly be against getting the US into WWII, while trying to figure out a way to sway opinion and get us into the war. It was an amazing breach of protocall and of what the American people wanted.
