Top quality field turf is better than what most of us have played on. Still field turf is superior than grass for football since the ball isnt on the ground. The rub is that it needs to be a heated surface at Soldier Field because that s*** freezes and becomes worse than grass in the snow.

IIRC they installed field heaters when Soldier Field was renovated

Ah there you go. Field Turf when frozen is extremely painful. Those little rubber pellets start actually cutting your skin like a bunch of mini paper cuts. its horrible.

Yeah this is one negative to the idea, unless as mentioned the field is kept warm during the winter. NIU doesn't have an IPF for football, and I know practicing on the field turf in the cold has been a major issues when we've made bowls 2 of the past 3 seasons because it's painful to get tackled on when it gets below the mid 30's in temperature.

Its hard as a rock and cuts the hell out of your skin, especially on your hands which is very painful. The heaters solve this issue for the most part. Another negative is that you need great drainage since the little black pellets will float around in standing water and make the turf very uneven.

They installed field turn at my highschool a couple years ago. It is EXTREMELY nice. Playing on it is much better than playing on grass. I don't see how anybody wouldnt want it.
