Unsurprisingly enough, scientists lied to us.

Though...we did have manned vehicles capable of operating over 4500 m deep more than 40 years ago, so I'm not sure why Flaxx thinks that's so surprising.

Surprising is the fact that you can basicaly buy off the shelf autonomous robots that operate that deep. For about a million bucks anyway.
