April 28 News and Notes

Tough market for free-agent Washburn — 12:28 p.m

The Dodgers and White Sox have been hampered by underperforming rotations so far.

At this point, though, neither club is in pursuit of free agent Jarrod Washburn.

“To my knowledge, neither team has shown interest,” Washburn said in an e-mail to FOXSports.com on Wednesday.

When the off-season began, the left-hander indicated a preference to pitch for a team that plays near his Wisconsin home (either the Brewers or Twins) or return to the Seattle Mariners, for whom he excelled during the first half of last season.

Of that group, the Twins and Mariners don’t appear to be in the market for starters now. The Brewers, with a 5.14 rotation ERA, are trying to address their needs internally.

Why the hell would this team want Washburn? He would get murdered at the Cell, being the fly ball pitcher that he is.

He's always been know as the poor man's Mark Buerhle. We'll see how Freddy does with normal rest. If he's OK, there's no reason to be interested in Washburn. If he's batting practice, they have to start considering alternatives, especially with Hudson looking like Marquez this season.

If there was/is even a hint of interest in Washburn then they should've traded Hudson when they had the f***ing chance.

I'm suprised Seattle didn't re-sign him, especially when they've had likes of Snell and Rowland-Smith starting for them this season.

Those two will probably end up with better numbers than Washburn at the end of the year.

I dunno bout that.

Obviously pitching at Safeco will help those 2, but they're borderline major league starters as it is (and Snell's just been moved to the pen for Lee's return), at least Washburn's had a track record of success. Obviously he needs to be in the right situation for him to succeed though.

I'd call Washburn a borderline guy. Career 4.86 xFIP. He had that great half a season last year with the Mariners, but even then the peripherals didn't support the production, and predictably he fell apart with Detroit. I'd run younger starters with at least some kind of potential out there over Washburn.

You could make that same argument with say Freddy Garcia, the issue is it all comes down to money. Garcia's willing to pitch for not much money, and Washburn hasn't shown he'll do that yet.
