Did Dusty Baker really invent the high five?

Featured Replies

Just heard on the radio earlier Brian Paruch talking about how he watched a TV show where they told the story of this being true. It was in the late 70's and Dusty just slapped one of his teamates hand that was raised when he came back to the dugout after a HR.

I would have thought it would have been around earlier than the 70's but apparently this is a true fact.

He also is the first to use a toothpick, when he had nothing stuck in his teeth.

He also invented the word "dude" and the destruction of young pitchers' arms.

Imagine that teammates reaction when Dusty slapped his hand. He probably looked at his hand, stared at it for awhile, and then enthusiastically shot up, knowing full well that he had just discovered an awesome, non-verbal means of congratulating someone.

Cmon, ICP!!! I'd guarantee that the hand slap has been around longer than any spoken language. Just think about how basic it is -- congratulating someone. If there was a time people were patting each other on the back for doing well, or shaking hands, I'd say the hand slap probably existed.

It was actually Dustys test to see if his pitchers needed to come out of a game. If he could get his hand above his shoulder, he wasn't tired enough yet and kept pitching.

The exchange was between him and Glen Burke in 77'.

The Dos Equis guy did.
