Away from the people? What about this scenario where the bomber, indicated by the red X, is surrounded by a snaking line with at least 100 people surrounding him?

 

The blast and shrapnel will be absorbed by the people closest to the bomb. People 10 feet away have a wall of flesh and bone they're behind.

The issue there is...the explosive used by the last couple guys to try, including the underwear guy, wouldn't be detected by those, I believe.

TSA was testing drinks near the gate in St. Louis last weekend. They were using something that looked like pH strips you use in your pool, but they just held it over the opening. Two thoughts. 1) Perhaps if this sort of thing wasn't covered up, and we heard about it everytime TSA staffers failed to catch weapons, the resulting embarassment would improve their performance more than whatever method now being used. 2) I've got to submit to naked scanners and pat downs when they can't even catch weapons going through the x-ray scanners they've already got?

My faith in the ability of government to decide what should be kept secret and what shouldn't is now even closer to nil.

I dunno why, but the body scanners are increasingly creeping me out. I've been choosing lines without them at airports, but I don't know how long that'll be an option. I know Midway just added one.
