Slooooooooooooly making progress. Both of my take home exams are now done and ready to be turned in tomorrow.

Now, I'm going to make a super-duper awesome study guide for my MKT 350 exam which is, well, now today, at 2 PM.

After that, 3 2-page film reviews and studying for my last final.

I hate philosophy, but I hate myself more for leaving like half of the reading responses unfinished until the last night. I'm bad at time management.

I think I pretty much aced my marketing final this morning. Got a 30/30 on the take-home portion, so I'm feeling good about the remaining 70 points.

One more 2-page movie review for film culture, this one will be on the musical score and sound effects of The Dark Knight. Then it's off to study for the final at 6 PM and I'm DONEZO.

Took my first final today. Unfortunately, I have two other ones to go. Sad part is, the one I took today might have been my easiest.

Taking my statistics final tomorrow, which is worth 100 points. If I get 22 points on it, I get a B. If I get 90 points on it, then I get an A in the class. I'm not so sure that it is really going to make a difference if I get an A or B in the course considering I'll never use the material in my lifetime. Sure it might boost my GPA, but I'm already over a 3.0 at 3.3, so I don't think an employer will really care.

Employers don't too often ask about GPA.

It's used as a screen before interviews, but after that they tend not to care. FWIW, most companies have a 3.0 cutoff, but others have stricter standards and are at 3.3 or even 3.5. There are ways to get around that but it is very difficult. For example, Deloitte Consulting has a 3.3 cutoff (atleast at my University), but to even get a decent chance of getting a job with them you'll have to be above a 3.5, unless you have connections and can prove to managers that you are very competent and your grades are not a reflection of how smart you are (which I don't believe in anyways).

Well I don't believe in standardized testing to get into colleges, but they do it anyway. A guy with an ACT of 20 and a 3.25 should be able to get into NIU, ISU, UIC and most other schools in Illinois with the exception of the most prestigious (University of Chicago, then Northwestern, then UIllinois) schools. How can you prove to managers that you are competent? Lastly, a 3.5 from a public university might hold ground over a 3.51+ at a private university. At least that is how I feel, and this is coming from someone who attended both types of universities to complete his undergraduate degree.

Then I wonder why my dad harps on my GPA even though it is about a 3.3 and I'm smart enough to work in an organization. I just have to be willing to be indoctrinated to a corporate lifestyle, which may be a problem.

In terms of proving to managers, it really is having a connection who can vouch for you and provide that link to them. I know one guy who went into I-Banking and had a 3.3, not bad at all but it's I-Banking and they want like a a 3.7 atleast. He had a connection, called the managers and showed him his skills on financial reporting software and how he had more skills than others applying. They realized his GPA wasn't reflective of the type of worker he could be so they took him on.

In terms of public vs. private, it all depends on which school you went to and what type of program you were in. Either type may specialize in an area and be preferred that way, or a company may be looking for specifics like the student is well rounded and knows the public school offers 3X as many student groups. It all depends really on the student and the employer and waht they have to offer and what they are looking for.

I will say that the image of being a tougher school will count a tad when looking at GPA, as in a student's GPA from Northwestern will be looked upon easier than a student from a community college or a lower tier state college. Also, it will depend on what degree you received too in how they look at GPA, engineers and business students (especially engineers) tend to get a bit more of a lax on GPA, while a LAS degree may have more strict GPA requirements.

GPA's (and grades in general) are the dumbest way to categorize people. Grades are f***ing dumb. If I get A's on all my exams but don't do stupid unnecessary homework and worksheets and other bulls*** projects and I get a C, it doesn't mean I'm an average student. Such a ridiculously huge flaw.

Anywho, completed all 3 of my film reviews. Got my exam in an hour and a half and I'm off to get drunk.

I agree that grades are terrible misrepresentation of who someone is, but in that example an employer would say "Why would I hire someone who slacks off in half of their job assignments?" I would say that most classes don't test students enough on real world application of the knowledge they learn, it's one thing for a student to be able to memorize 400 pages of material for a one week period to do well on all their tests, it's another thing to ask those students now employees to apply that knowledge to the work they are doing. It is also incredibly important to note that GPA does not reflect how hard, how efficiently, etc a student works.

Finals week is/was pretty easy for me.

I had 2 finals last week (80% and then 88%)

I have taken 1 final so far this week (78%)

I take one final tonight (If I get a 90% or higher, I should keep at least a 93% in the class for an A)

And 1 final tomorrow night which will be a BIIIIIIIITCH. It's really 2 finals, the last one being an essay. It's over Western Civilization. So boring.
