Source: Former Sox catcher Skinner favorite to land Triple-A Charlotte job

October 20, 2011|By Mark Gonzales | Tribune reporter

Former Chicago White Sox catcher Joel Skinner is considered the favorite to land the organization's Triple-A Charlotte managerial position, according to a major league source.

Skinner, 50, recently served as the bench coach for Oakland. He was a coach for Cleveland from 2001-09 and worked with Buddy Bell, the Sox's director of player development, on the Indians' coaching staff from 2003 through May of 2005. Skinner has managed six seasons in the Indians' minor league system.

Skinner is in line to replace Joe McEwing, who is expected to be announced as the Sox's third base coach after the conclusion of the World Series.

Skinner played for the Sox during parts of the 1983-86 seasons during a nine-year major league career.

The continuing adreneline rush

Do the Sox hire anyone that hasn't been on the team at some point?

Mark Parent hates you.

Back when the stadium was blue and attendance woes were the most consistent topic of White Sox discussion, people complained that they didn't bring in former players.

I read the first post and thought "Well crap, what did they do with Laker, he was the only effective hitting coach we had last year." At least he got a promotion.

Joel Skinner was the reason Hawk moved Carlton Fisk to LF. Didn't quite work out.

The Chicago White Sox have announced that Ryan Newman will return to Great Falls next summer as the manager of the Great Falls Voyagers.

Newman led the Voyagers to a 42-34 regular season record, the second-half Pioneer League North Division title and a victory in the League Championship Series during his first season with Great Falls.

Newman, who played collegiately at Texas Christian and appeared in 143 games in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system, is 134-150 in four years as a minor league manager, with stops in Bristol, Va., of the Appalachian League and Oneonta, N.Y., of the New York-Penn League.

Newman resides in Scottsdale, Ariz., during the offseason.

Also returning to Great Falls is pitching coach Brian Drahman, who will begin his fourth year in the Electric City. Charlie Poe takes over as hitting coach as Gary Ward moves on to the same position at Class A Winston-Salem.

Wasn't Gary Ward the guy several ex-Sox players said set them back as players due to his lack of hitting knowledge?

He'd certainly fit in with the hires this offseason.

Why? He has major league experience.

Nope. And they've been such a successful franchise, it stands to reason why they'd keep it a family affair.

I seriously don't understand why they do this every time they go to hire anyone for anything.

First guess...money.

Second guess...keeps the boss happy/comfortable.

Third guess...gives you a convenient excuse/fall guy if things don't work out.
