Selling A Car

Yes, I know the internet is full of articles about how to sell your car. But hearing from people here is always better.

Anyway, we have a 2nd car we never use, it's a Ford Focus. About time to sell it. Is craigslist the way to go, or is that too dicey and too much of a hassle?

Anyone have good experience selling their car/recs/tips on doing so? I'm sure some of you have gone through this whole process.

Thanks for any advice.

Take only cash or a certified instrument (bank check or the like) as payment.

Never let them drive off with the car, without you in it.

Putting an ad on cars.com or the like is likely less risky, but who knows.

Do not say anything to a buyer that might even remotely sound like a guarantee or warranty.

What year? If its in decent shape you should be able to just pick a reasonable price, put it on CL and clean up. Those are good cars and people want them in the city.

Just use common sense when vetting people, many of them will be more nervous about you trying to rip them off than you'll be of them trying to rob you.

I sold one on Craig's List last year. I listed it at 11:00 am on a Sunday and at 1:00 pm I met the buyer and his English speaking niece in a parking lot of a Lowes, we agreed on a price. He handed over a small stack of $50s and $100s and I handed him a Bill of Sale and the Title. I also had him give me his contact info (bogus) as it turned out. In Texas the plates travel with the vehicle. Later I received a large packet of info from Homeland Security explaining that the car had been used in a crime and was confiscated. If I still had an ownership claim, to speak up, if not no big deal. The notice that I had sent to the State of Texas regarding the sale crossed in the mail. So overall I was happy. I researched the prices and picked a price that would be a low hassle negotiation. Over trade in value but below resale. I also was very honest about the car.

My current car would have been on Craig's list but my dad knew the owner and knew I wanted a full size pick up. I bought the car in Illinois and transferred title to Texas. Very easy process.

I've always found it easier to just sell it to Carmax...you may be able to get a better deal doing it on your own, but the process seems iffy to me...and the small amount of extra cash isn't worth any possible headaches, IMO. For example, they buy your car, despite having bought it "as is", and proceed to get into an accident and serious hurt themselves...they'll find out who you were and sue you it, for blaming the car even though it had nothing to do with anything...because that's what people do.

No thanks.

Carmax will give you a better deal than a tradein or dealership will, but not quite as good of a deal of selling it yourself, but without any possibility of something going wrong and biting you. Our litigate happy society ruined a lot of this for me...it's why I never sell things like cars "by owner" anymore. Just not worth it.

  • 4 weeks later...

I just saw a coworker's decked out 2012 Infiniti FX, that is a REALLY nice car, it blew away the Lexus RX.

I'm saving up for a new car at the moment, right now I really like the Hyundai Veloster Turbo. I'd love an Audi A3 but it's out of my price range.

The car thread is gone, but does anyone have any experience or currently own an X5? I love my jeep but I stopped into a BMW dealership on a whim and they have a new diesel model coming out that really snagged my interest.

I test drove a non-diesel several months ago....they're awesome in terms of performance and handling...I just can't stand their interiors...but the diesel will definitely be an awesome ride...any money you possibly save on gas though will be lost in the cost of the vehicle, which is easily going to be $60k...

Yeah, I looked at the 50 and 50D, so IM spending quite a bit, however cheaper than the new RRSC.
