Trying to acquire a starting pitcher before everyone knew he was out for the year?

Rangers admitted they did that with Feliz

No.

They would not put Danks through some alternate recovery program premised on resting and then rehab of the shoulder so that they could acquire a SP more cheaply.

It is pretty clear that they genuinely believed he could recover with rest and rehab.

It didn't work. Oh well. They cut their losses and will now go forward with the surgery.

Not for 2 months. That additional time to recover isn't worth the chance. I'm pretty sure just about every team figured he was out for the year or wasn't going to be very effective if he did come back by what was happening.

I don't think they had decided on surgery until the last side session. Then it got really quiet, all except for Hawk letting the surgery slip, and of course no one in the Chicago media picked it up.

If the Sox thought, or I should say knew for sure that he was going to need surgery, exactly what were they trying to accomplish delaying it? They obviously felt it was something where surgery could be avoided. It turns out it was not. It looks like their diagnosis was fairly right on except perhaps the tear was a little bigger than they thought.

The way I see it the Sox didnt think the injury would heel without Surgery, they hoped the injury would heel without surgery. They also misdiagnosed the injury b/c if they knew it was a capsular tear from day one they would have just had season ending surgery when he hit the DL in June.
