Brett Myers Contract

I can't believe what I'm reading here. Who wants a $10M per to a 7th or 8th inning guy next year? Strangely enough, Myers has finished several games this year where he wasn't needed to finish the game. If we end up having to pay him $10M next year (or roughly 10% of our payroll) this would be a huge mistake.

The mistake would be to let a contract clause keep us from pitching to win a division title.

Yes, this has been well-known since we acquired him, and we've used him perfectly, IMO.

He finished 29 games when we acquired him. His clause vests at 45 games finished. He currently sits at 36 games finished.

That means in the 1 month he has been on the Sox, he has finished 7 of the 15 games he can finish without his contract vesting.

Which means in the remaining 1 month of the season, Robin can use up his other 8 finishes. That's pretty damn good allotment so far. He can finish 44 at no extra cost, so you may as well use those considering he has been very good with this team. He's arguably our been out best reliever since we acquired him (I could be wrong, just seems like it).

So you're in favor of letting him finish a game where we were down 6 runs? Because it happened. That's the point.

Last 30 Days (minimum 5 innings) ERA/WHIP

Reed 1.93/1.18

Jones 2.57/2.29

Thornton 2.79/1.03

Myers 3.21/1.14

Crain 3.27/1.00

Humber 3.79/1.37 (includes 2 starts)

Santiago 5.06/1.69

So, not the best, but definitely holding his own.

IIRC those runs all came in one outing.

I have no problem with him pitching the 8th, but no way do we let him finish a game other than it being an accident (e.g. he pitches the ninth in a tie game and we walk off our opponent etc etc). Wouldn't you rather that $10M go towards Youk or even crazily spending the $ on JFP (crazy, I know, and it will never happen).

They did. I am pretty sure in only ONE appearance for the Sox has he been charged with an Earned Run, and it was like 4 of them at once, against the Royals. One blip, and his ERA jumped a ton.

Perfectly stated. And what would really be interesting would be to know the essence of conversations from Kenny to Robin on Myers' finishing games. Roughly five weeks to go.

The only way Myers makes sense at $10 million is as a starter again, replacing Floyd in the rotation (former Phils' teammate, ironically).

And in no way would the White Sox even think about Myers as a starter.

So we're all done complaining about Myers finishing games now, right?

I was just thinking the same thing.

Sox better stop bringing him in at the end of games starting now. Team is gonna look bad if they shut him down at 43 or 44. No way in hell the Sox can let that clause go into effect. So give him a new role, right now. Like the seventh inning. Keep him away from the end of games.

Sox don't have to worry about it. If Myers finishes enough games to trigger the clause, they can just trade him to the Dodgers--the Dodgers will take on any contract.
