Ballsiest Starting Rotation in the League?

Featured Replies

Just thinking about this, but now that Floyd is out and our 5 are Sale, Peavy, Quintana, Axe, and Santiago, is this the ballsiest bunch of overachieving competitors in the league or what? And who would challenge these sultans of sac anyway? There isn't one guy in this rotation that is afraid of a bat, afraid of a hitter, afraid of a tough team or situation. Even with Sale & Peavy having the stuff they have, they are also pitcher's pitchers, and there's no doubt that Q, Hector, and especially BattleAxe are all overachievers who would make any pitching coach proud. This rotation has balls. Enough of Thunderstruck, we've got the right band but the wrong song, I say it's time to change the theme to Big Balls IMO. And if Freddy's career is over then all we have to do is get him to be a part of the minor league development staff and then we'll just have nothing but weighty sac at all levels waiting to come up and explode all over the faces of the opposition. JMO, any thoughts?

Bring on the Mariners!

Sale, Peavy and Axelrod you're right.

Hector has been a short sample size but you seem to be right.

Quintana I would argue otherwise. How many times has he had a fielder make an error that he can't pitch over. Look at his 5th and 6th innings this year. He fades.

I disagree with that. Quinatana showed all last year that he has balls and has no fear on the mound.

Quintana was amazing his first 10 or 15 starts last year.

This year, "merely" good or very good.

But he does need to figure out how to extend games at least into the 6th or 7th.

Last year, he did a better job keeping his pitch counts down. This year, the league has made some adjustments, he's dealing with a new catching corps and he's had to adjust to RH batters just sitting on his inside stuff...the old "turn and burn" approach. So he's going to have to continue to vary his approach and not become too predictable in his patterns.

I didn't realize how good Peavy has been this year. If the Sox are out of it come the trade deadline, does he get traded? And if so, what kind of return could he get?

It is certainly a possibility. Also, I have to imagine they'd get quite a bit in return. He's signed to a very friendly contract.

Did you hang up and listen for your answer? ;)

No, I stayed on the line so all of the other listeners would hear an echo.

You gotta wonder if upper management has any loyalty to Jake knowing that he signed that deal at below market to stay in Chicago? I suppose I could see them going to him and getting a list of teams he'd be willing to play for but just shipping him off after he signed that deal to stay here would probably not send the best signal to future free agents...

It sounds like Peavy would be willing to accept a trade anywhere if that team was in contention.

Which seems to be a change in his stance from past years.

Yeah if we're out of it, his trade has a chance to be a bright spot in a dismal season. The market should be pretty fierce with two wild cards in each league and the nice short-term contract he's on.

I saw a quotation from him after being asked why he didn't demand a NTC. His response was something like, "I told them as long as they don't trade me before the season starts, I'm pretty much fine."

Jake Peavy IMO owed the Sox that deal considering he was injured and got paid like an ace for those years. Granted it's his choice and I'm glad he did what he did considering he would've got paid on the FA market.

Yes, he wants that "dogpile" I believe was the quote :D
