The Cubs were pantsed? Lee hasn't hit the majors yet, but none of the other pieces have done a whole lot. Garza has been pretty good. That trade is pretty dependent upon Archer and Lee panning out.

I don't see how you can't think this trade is a win for the cubs. They got two good arms for Scott Feldman. The Cubs won't be missing Feldman at all 3 years from now, but the Orioles might be missing Arrieta in 3 years as he still has the potential to become a nasty starting pitcher (his stuff has never been the problem, it has been throwing strikes and learning how to pitch that has caused his lack of success). I don't blame the Orioles for trading Arrieta at all though, it was one of the situations where a change of scenery was definitely needed. Jake Arrieta could be to the Cubs what Chris Davis has been to the Orioles, a reclamation project turned to all-star.

Or he could continue to be hot garbage and be out of baseball by 2015. Feldman was just a rental, so getting a lottery ticket out of it is great, and it will never be a bad trade for the Cubs. But it could easily just ended up being a footnote that is quickly forgotten.

I think it was you that mentioned this in the other thread, but thankfully the new spending rules are in place for the draft/Intl' signings. If not, the Cubs would have definitely been a top spender.

Still...nothing prevents you from dropping 20M this year, take your penalty next year, and then doing it all over again.

And I still don't think they pantsed the Cubs. Getting pantsed is like the Erik Bedard to Seattle trade, or the Pierzynski to San Francisco trade.

 

They may also be 50 games under .500 with Garza, but, #1, how much of that is from losing 101 games last year, and #2, how much did Garza contribute to the offense scoring the 3rd fewest runs in the NL last year? I feel like I've had this conversation before.

 

I won't say it was the Cubs best use of resources, but considering the value, I still see nothing wrong with it. Lee has not put up very good numbers in the Rays' system, though he's apparently a super defender. I remember hearing similar things about Chin-lung Hu too. And Archer is merely a reliever at this point, and not nearly as cool as his super agent brother.

 

I'm not faulting Tampa for making the trade either, because it was something they really had to do. You can argue value any way you'd like, but saying the Cubs got pantsed, as in taken to the house...that's just wrong.

True. It wasn't Theo and Jed that traded for Garza in the 1st place though. That trade is not on them.
