December 8, 201312 yr It may be too early for this thread, the roster isn't set, but I am wondering what goals the Sox really have for 2014. Forget the marketing bulls*** that they will toss out that the team could win the world series. What are the realistic goals. I am thinking of a couple obvious Develop Abreu Keep Sale healthy Catcher? What else? I'm thinking actual items that the team currently has control over. We could add something like ditching Dunn or other roster type moves. But I think it would be interesting to stick to things that do not rely on other teams and luck.
December 8, 201312 yr Turn Viciedo and Garcia into big league hitters Hopefully turn Beckham into something useful See if Gillaspie can improve on last year to be a tolerable cheap option at 3b Get Saniago to 200 innings Get Danks back to his old self Give Petricka or Webb innings in the pen to develop at this level Wake De Aza up. Get Johnson and Rienzo to 175 innings each between AAA and the bigs Get Veal back into the 2012 groove Get Semien and Sanchez consistent playing time at AAA

Also must hit home run with third pick in draft and Hawkins needs to get his foot out of prospect grave.
December 8, 201312 yr Good thread Tex. Most important for me: Abreu a legit middle of the order hitter, EJ at least a middle of the rotation starter and Semien an above average infielder, preferably a MI.
December 8, 201312 yr Author I think the knowledgeable fan will have a reasonable understanding of a "good" and "great" 2014 season. We're still a season or more likely two seasons away from being competitive to the point where the yardstick will be a playoff spot or even going AL champs. And that may be where the casual fan and the knowledgeable fan diverge. There are already a couple things going great (Sale for example), the object is keep those plates spinning and not crashing down while firing up a few more.
