40 Man Roster/Rule V Draft

Featured Replies

I've been reading that the Astros are going to have some tough decisions on who to protect on their 40 man roster and I was wondering who is eligible from the Sox that needs to get protected and put on the 40 man roster. If you guys can help out that would be great.

Wilkins, for openers.

Trayce Thompson I think, right?

Thompson is already on the 40 man. The guys I have are Wilkins, Kevan Smith, Ravelo, Saladino, Snodgrass, Bassitt, and Montas. I think Micah Johnson has one more year, which is why you may not see him up this year.

Slots will be opening from Konerko and Dunn and Mitchell, Molina, Taylor Thompson, Jordan Danks, Cleto, and De Los Santos are all possible/probable to be outrighted off the 40 man roster.

Kevin Smith might not make the 40 man roster since Flowers Nieto and Phegley aren't going anywhere. I wouldn't be surprised if a few teams would put him on their active roster next year.

Players likely to be off 40-man next year:

Nate Jones (60-day DL)

Matt Lindstrom

Felipe Paulino

Adam Dunn

Paul Konerko

Gordon Beckham

Players who reasonably could be removed from 40-man:

Ronald Belisario

Scott Carroll

Maikel Cleto

Frank De Los Santos

Raul Fernandez

Javy Guerra

Charlie Leesman

Nestor Molina

Tyler Flowers

Josh Phegley

Jordan Danks

Alejandro De Aza

Jared Mitchell

Moises Sierra

Dayan Viciedo

Bear in mind that Avisail will have to take somebody's place on the 40-man roster when he returns, too.

I agree, it will be tough to justify putting him on the roster unless they dump Phegley some place else. I think that one of the two will start next season as Flowers backup and Nieto will head to AAA to get everyday AB's. Flowers will be 29 next season, Smith and Phegley will both be 27.

Nate Jones has to remain in the 40-man throughout the offseason. Once baseball activities start, he can be transferred to the 60-day DL to open up a spot on the 40-man roster.
