It is not 2 totally different positions. This isn't the OF vs the IF or something like that. The only big difference between SS and 2B is the throw to 1B. The depth and range are all the same.
June 1, 201510 yr Semien played a little bit of second with the Sox, and wasn't very good. He isn't a good defender. Maybe some day, but there is a reason the Sox wanted him to work in the OF a bit, and it wasn't because he was a standout defensive infielder.
