Keep in mind there was a good size quake near the Chile-Peru border on Monday. It's along the same western coast in South America.

That same area had a minor tsunami in 1964 which killed 11 people.

Well it looks like the bulletin was before the warning. Looks like we may find out shortly.

Well it looks like the quake happened at 752 local, the bulletin say no tsunami was at 759 and the warning occured at 830.

Wow, the earth is really going nuts. SD earthquake at 5.6, this earthquake at 7, and the Chilean quake at over 7.

 

The earth must look like a tuning fork right now.

 

Jim maybe you know this, could this be secondary effects of the Indonsesian quake, basically shaking the earth so hard, that some of the other faults of the world start to give way? And also do you think we could see some more volcanic activity that could be the result of, or a contributing cause to this quake activity?

Current expert opinion is that this is the earth's way of railing against the reuniting of the Spice Girls and Tony Orlando and Dawn.

 

I actually don't have much insight on if and how all the events are related - other than the above 'Gaia hates bad music hypothesis.'

 

Even for those in the field there are tremendous gaps in the knowledge because events are usually only being recorded from great distances away. The upside of all this activity, including the December tragedy, is that the lack of information is getting noted and efforts are being stepped up to get seafloor Global Ocean Observatory System (GOOS) networks in place. These will monitor tectonic/seismic activity simultaneously along all plate margins and allow synthesis of informartion at the global scale of resolution. Big dollar projects - and to think it only took ~ 200K deaths to get things rolling.
