  1. Evacuees, the displaced, refugees, all similar words but the media is trying to be edgy so they use the most emotion evoking word, refugee. I don't believe it's false to call the surivors of Katrina that but some do because they are offended that Americans could be considered a term usually reserved for those impoverished in the less developped world.
  2. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 05:50 PM) Um. Really? Screaming at people? Really? Screaming, you say? Hrmph. Ok. Could be interpreted as screaming, but it's impossible to scream on the internet. Shame on the media, uhh, I mean SS2K for using an offensive term.
  3. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 05:48 PM) This is a completely pointless argument but the word foreign comes after especially and is left out of other definitions completely. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=refugee
  4. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 05:44 PM) You would fit in nicely with the media. Take the extra 30 seconds, grab an f'ing dictionary, and use the proper term. /end You're dead wrong!!
  5. The semantics of the definition don't really matter. It's just what a people generally think the word means and if you're willing to accept it. I haven't noticed but you're implying that the media has accepted the use of the word to describe Katrina victims. straight out of my Winston Canadian Dictionary sitting beside my computer "n. one who flees for safety, esp. from political or religious persecution, to a foreign land."
  6. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 05:26 PM) Dear Media, Your constant use of the term "refugee" when referring to those "victims" of Hurricane Katrina and her destruction is grossly misused and incorrect in the extreme. Per Dictionary.com: an individual seeking refuge or asylum; especially : an individual who has left his or her native country and is unwilling or unable to return to it because of persecution or fear of persecution (as because of race, religion, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion) These poor people you have deemed "refugees" are nothing of the sort. In fact, your use of the term "refugee" is, in itself, incorrect by definition. To paint these hurricane survivors as "refugees" not only does them as disservice, but labels them in a derogatory and inflammatory manner. These people are American citizens, just like you and I. In no way, shape, or form are they "refugees." This is a time to help out our fellow American, not label them as "outsiders,” “persons in exile” or “immigrants.” Thank you. I shake your warmly by the hand. AddisonStSox Especially means that most of the time that is the situation but doesn't mean all of the time. more general definition http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=refugee I think people are just afraid of applying the term as it in some way implies that Americans are on the same level as those of an undevelopped ountry. And aren't all men created equally?

  8. Robin Tunney I don't mind the show but I don't think it comes close to being as good as 24. I do like both the male leads in their roles, I noticed Wentworth Miller is going to be in Jennifer Love's Hewitt's new show too.
  9. QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 12:17 PM) What will the response be if a terrorist/group of terrorists walk into downtown Chicago and set off suitcases of "dirty" nuclear bombs or biological weapons? . This hurricane and it's aftermath was predicted years ago, and, still, the response by all levels of government was slow and weak. Does anyone have faith that the response will be better to an unpredictable attack/natural disaster? I don't. just a tid bit of info on dirty bombs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_bomb

  17. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 7, 2005 -> 12:31 AM) This quote appeared in an early AP version of this story. Ted Stevens, by the way, is Senator for a state that is about to build a $500 million bridge to an island with 50 inhabitants. Twice the size of Europe
  18. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 10:44 PM) And your point is? The President can do anything necessary to run this country from anywhere. The Oval Office does not give him special powers that he can't use elsewhere. Look, any time we have a major catastrophe there are going to be situations that can be handled differently. Sure mistakes were made, communications broke down, etc. I would be shocked if that were NOT the case. I just think it is a major crock to be politicking all of this. Why does the blame game have to start now? Someone mentioned because there could be another catastrophe next week? If you don't think that behind the scenes heads aren't rolling and they aren't already working on what went wrong, you are naive. I just don't see the purpose or need for a partison roast through the media. Sometimes, things need to be worked out behind closed doors rather than for all to see and critique. Unfortunately, this country has to blame someone and it all starts with the media. All the media does is turn things into a bigger circus. We have just witnessed the single biggest catastrophe in American history. It has basically wiped out a whole coastline. The magnaminity of this is almost beyond comprehension. No matter what the role of government is, and how many "fire drills" are done to have a plan ready, something of this enormity is bound to be a clusterf***. History will show that the media tried to do it's job and criticized and questioned all involved while makings mistakes of its own and learning a great deal about really how important the race issue still is. History will also show that aid could have been given quicker and the blame probably at least lay somewhat at the top. 20 years from now are people going to be able to think wow the administration sure did all they could, I wish the media hadn't been so darn liberal and Bush hadn't been villified like he has (I'm yet to see an actual media outlet blame Bush). Where's Dick Cheney? Where was George Bush? What the hell was Condie doing? FAIR questions to ask. And if these are questions the media is not supposed to ask, and this is a consensus among Americans, which it isn't, then what is point of the news media anyways? ""Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable" -Thomas Jefferson

  20. QUOTE(juddling @ Sep 5, 2005 -> 06:07 PM) gee..in this corner we have Ben Stein who has worked in politics and is generally considered a smart guy.... ......and in this corner we have a constant Bush-bashing Canadian who decided to cyber-name himself after a ex-sox pitcher with a career record of 54-66. hmm...i think i'll stick with the opinions of Ferris's teacher. I think I'd kick Ben Stein's butt in a debate. Your missing a key point here though juddling. On Ben Stein's resume the word politician pops up, which often negates much intelligence one has and replaces it with the instinct to spin. p.s. my username was created when he was still a white sock
