DVS has a story out now where he spoke with Crochet who said it's time for the Sox to start getting angry.

Don't know if that will do any good or what may be going on in the clubhouse that caused Crochet to say that. (The assumption is that maybe things are to laid-back right now causing him to say that.)

You also wonder if Grifol has already lost the clubhouse.

That's if he ever 'had the clubhouse' in the first place, and from the evidence of last season that is doubtful.

  2. The only thing worse tham watching the team on the field is listening to Grifol's bull after the game trying to pretend the team is 'competing' etc.

I would much rather he just came out and said straight up that it was bad but what did you expect with this team of players, preferably followed up by announcing his resignation.

I think we can all agree that this is one of the worst White Sox teams ever assembled. I say we have some fun with it. So, let's hear it. What records in futility can the Sox realistically chase this season?

Consecutive losses to start a season?

Least runs scored in a season?

Most times swept in a season?

    Lowest team batting average?

    Most times striking out?

    Least number of walks?

Most losses for a White Sox team?

I think they have a good shot at all of these records.

Yes, Moncada is hurt a lot. As far as I can tell, he has been trying to play through a serious back problem. There's pretty much no amount of toughness and rubbing dirt on it that will help with serious back problems. Whether that is career threatening I am not sure, but it definitely seems within the realm of possibility.

It's not just that Moncada gets hurt alot or has back issues which may genuinely be hampering him in some situations, but he appears to have little to no baseball intelligence. The plate appearance the other day when he had 3 balls against a pitcher who had already walked 2 and then proceeded to take one down the middle and swing wildly at 2 off the plate balls was awful, it would be insulting to little leaguers to call it a little league play.

Equally, Eloy gets injured alot but similarly shows an amazing lack of baseball intelligence or ability to adjust his play to the situation on the field.

The problem is the Sox are just beginning one of those long stretches of badness that the Pirates and Orioles have had. Remember when the O's finished last every year and were out of it every May

The White Sox will be out of it by mid-April let alone May!

He reminds me of a corporate kiss ass.  I remember him mentioning things he was from another dugout that was always good for losing 90 games.  He says things like he didn't like the team.

You wonder what players around the league say about people you never hear about it in the media.  Maye just maybe players under him might have said the guy is a joke.

He's set up this season not to fail. If they lose less than a 100 games it will be considered success. The bar is set low. Only Stone can paint a positive picture. The rest of us have been duped long before that.

The only thing interesting about this team is the fans bitching.  Eventually the media will not give them attention.  Reinsdorf will have to come up with another make believe soap opera for people to know this organization still exists.

The media wil be interested if the White Sox have a historically bad start! The "when will they win a game?" attention would be more than they would get for just being mediocre. Then the attention of will they have the worst season ever would guarantee attention beyond the All Star Break.

Maybe Jerry thinks that any attention is better than no attention.

Chuck Tanner and Jeff Torborg were the two Sox managers who seemed to consistently get more out of their team and players than the talent level on paper.

I agree with @CaliSoxFanViaSWside that Pedro inherited weak talent and depth, plus a poor clubhouse from Tony. Perhaps Pedro will improve in game decisions and also hold veterans accountable this year.

The manager over the next few years will really need to be solid developing and mentoring the next group of prospects. Not sure Pedro is the best fit on that end without a lot of growth and guidance.

I think that is the problem with TLR still lurking around whispering in Jerry's ear and Getz as a rookie GM where will Grifol get that guidance?

I think that the way things are keeping Grifol this season is not a total disaster, but he has to show some signs of becoming a competent MLB manager. A repeat of last season in terms of they way they played and the way he managed would be a wasted season and could do damage to young players development.

With all the new players and the 'rebuilding' the team needs a manager to guide the younger players and teach them fundamentals not a manager who is learning himself and shown few signs of being up to the job himself. Whilst there is something to be said for the team and manager learning and growing together nothing he has done or said so far suggests that is going to happen.

4/30 so far have put the Sox in the top three. Our spirit has been broken.

I feel pretty good about Minnesota 1st and Cleveland 2nd. On paper, Detroit is a clear 3rd but they seem to always underperform. I really think there could be three teams winning < 75 games.

Not sure it is spirit being broken so much as reality, and not wanting to get our hopes up again. The way I am thinking at the moment is that anything above 5th place will be above expectations so will anything above 65 wins.

The "good news" has been severely limited and doesn't even come close to comparing to other teams that actually are trying to win and aren't incompetent, dysfunctional or inept.

Today is actually the anniversary of another "one shining moment" in the history of this franchise (LOL):

March 18, 2016 - The ongoing embarrassment that surrounded the retirement of Adam LaRoche ended, at least officially, with the player explaining his side of the story.

Just hours earlier, Chris Sale had kicked off what would be an utterly bizarre year for him by speaking out in support of LaRoche and against his own G.M., Ken Williams. Outfielder Adam Eaton would do the same.

The crux of the story came down to LaRoche claiming that, contrary to what was promised when he signed with the White Sox, his son Drake recently had been completely banned from spring training. Williams proffered that he’d spoken to Adam about lessening Drake’s constant presence with the team (as prompted by players like Jimmy Rollins, who talked to the G.M. about this strange, unprofessional and intrusive arrangement), and then lost his cool, when after that, he saw Drake on the pitcher’s mound during infield practice and issued a complete ban. The entire situation made the organization look inept and dysfunctional.

"The entire situation made the organization look inept and dysfunctional." This could be the catchphrase for the last 10 years at the White Sox.

Well...this is the diametrical opposite of the SoxTalkers consensus of holding him down at Charlotte to claim back a year of control.

Not just claim back a year of control but actually build him up properly to be a starter like a responsible management would. If he lasts through May before breaking down I will be surprised.

    White Sox: LHP Garrett Crochet
Crochet expressed an offseason desire to take on the starting pitching challenge, the White Sox agreed and the southpaw has been a man on a mission during this month in Arizona. His talent already was known from parts of three seasons in the bullpen, but Crochet has attacked the strike zone during this starting opportunity, with his fastball touching 100 mph. He has struck out 12 without a walk and allowed seven hits over nine scoreless innings. Crochet could end up anywhere from the White Sox starter on Opening Day to working as a multi-inning hurler out of the bullpen when the team breaks camp. -- Scott Merkin

Seems like Garrett has definitely made the team and killed off all chances of clawing back another year of control...just have to wait and see how long it all lasts.

That's the big issue, given how few innings he has pitched over the last 2 seasons it would be crazy to expect him to be a regular starter this season. It would be better long term to have him starting in AAA but we all know that won't happen.

Doesn't that depend on whether Clevinger was a good teammate? He's been around and had a lot of success.

Its not a question of being a 'good teammate', he could be the best guy in the clubhouse, which is unlikely given that no other team will touch him, the whole off field nonsense is not what you want around a supposedly rebuilding team looking for a fresh start.

As for being a 'success' he was hardly 'lights out' last season and once again no other team seems interested in his talents, he is at best a 3 or 4 starter these days. In addition it would be far better to give a younger player MLB exposure this seaon considering the WS are going to be losing anyway. Clevinger is hardly going to transform the team into contenders this season so why bring him back?

    • Thanks 1
  13. No matter whether he was innocent or not of the allegations re-signing Clevinger doesn't suggest the 'new start' and 'new attitude' that Getz has been big on over this closed season. Considering the WS will not be winning or contending anyway this season signing a player with this sort of baggage who is not exactly going to transform the team is needless.

Because relegation is stupid. Relegation leads to LESS parity, not more.

Maybe I am biased being a Brit, but relegation isn't stupid. It forces the lower clubs to actually try all season because otherwise they get relegated and lose money by being in a lower league. Yes it doesn't suddenly make the lower teams equal to the big teams, but nothing ever will, salary caps etc won't equalise the teams as the big teams will always find a way round it and the lower teams will still not spend up to the cap. And there are many examples of small teams who get promoted to the top league who go on to become good competitive teams, equally some former big teams who have been living on past achievements have been given a kick up the backside by relegation.

Relegation also makes the season more interesting for fans as there is the jeopardy of relegation. In football here in England 3 teams are relegated each season and 2 get automatic promotion from the lower league and the third place goes to the winner of a play of between the teams who finish 3-6 in the 2nd division., this makes the season longer and more interesting as well.

I know promotion and relegation is alien to US sports but it does work in other sports around the world. It would be far too radical a change to ever happen in baseball but in my opinion it would spice up the season and prevent clubs perennially tanking.

While true, what exactly has Sheets done to have a virtual lock on a roster spot? Other than be worse at everything?

If suddenly guys need to earn a roster spot through merit, then, um, there are quite a few names on the list that would be way ahead of poor Oscar.

Definitely you are right about Sheets, and Colas could get a season of experience to show what he can do in the MLB on a team that isnt under pressure. We already know Sheets can't do it at MLB level especially as a RF.
