2015 MLB Draft Thread - Discussion - DAY TWO

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 02:51 PM) LDF, Matuella has Boras as an advisor. What are they doing? How much could he possibly want? At this point there isn't much money available to them. he prob would not sign, his agent is the factor. i think since he missed this season due to an injury, he might be eligible for another yr of college. he prob will go back to build up his value. -

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 03:13 PM) I still like Allard over Fulmer from a talent and upside view, but Fullmer is by no means a bad pick. He's going to need to simplify his delivery a lot to be a starter at the next level imo, but dominant bull pen arms are by no means something to be viewed lightly. Robertson, Fulmer, and Duke could make games real short in the near future you have a point with Allard. now take this into consideration. reaching their full potential. he is still a hs'er, now look at Hawkins and how much of a detour he took. will he reach his potential now, the potential that was heap on him..... Fulmer has mostly developed, so he is less of a risk than Allard. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 03:25 PM) What's the most they could possibly give Matuella in the 4th round? with the needs of the sox, no way in the 4, but prob more like 8 or 9. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 03:21 PM) At what point do we wonder if the reason he doesn't have a managerial job yet is that he has some sort of character flaw that teams aren't comfortable with? re Martinez, you made a good point. i am thinking that it is the unknown. ref mike maddux, he is dedicate to the Braves. Since he did not get the job, he is free to choice for his future.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 03:18 PM) Because the other route is getting harder and harder, finding guys like DeAza or JD Martinez that are dumped by their organizations and in need of a change of scenery (Dominguez MIGHT be another example)...OR Alexei when there wasn't much of a track record for Cubans and many clubs still were expecting more Rey Ordonez/utility infielder types. Then we were fortunate to have a 1B opening for Abreu in a year when almost all of the other big market teams were not looking to fill that particular position. Then we seemingly whiffed on the Davidson trade, and we also made numerous OTHER mistakes with 3B (Teahen, Viciedo, Keppinger, Brent Morel). The margin for error is razor thin when you miss out on one or two of those trades and also end up stuck with bad contracts such as Melky Cabrera and John Danks. re the bold, that was the KW era..... but you made a interesting point. here is the question, would the sox have signed Jose A, if the sox didn't needed a 1b??? now is the run on cuban players.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 03:11 PM) And that's been a sorry, failed proposition for years when trading for veterans. Not only do they overpay, what they get isn't what is advertised. People want to pile on the prospects for Longoria or Kemp, or Zobrist or Lucroy, but those guys are no cinches to repeat performance. KW tried to load up the wagon for Erstad (before he was terrible, but he was never particularly great) foiled only by the Angels owner. ML ready talent seems to be something they're good at identifying, but to pry that away you need a)something to trade and b) often have to catch a team desperate. Avi, Quentin and Eaton are good players, but we traded a good player for each (Peavy, our #1 prospect Carter, Santiago who was and is a good young pitcher). But that's fine - we overpaid for none of them, but simply traded value for value. damn, you really have another excellent post. i am loving this conversation. re to overpaying and what is avail. i am an ranked amateur compared to the real org, but i went and soured the prospects list of those teams that may need a player for the playoff run and teams with a nice systems. so if a team needs a player that the sox can help, that doesn't mean they will help in the rtn assets. so how can the sox persuade a team to help the sox, if the sox helps them.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 03:05 PM) Eh, they got Sale under similar circumstances. There were both major signability concerns (ala Rodon) and mechanic concerns (ala Fulmer) with Sale and Sox got that done, rather easilly really. all that matters is results. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 02:56 PM) Kerian's bat can absolutely play. If they could transition him to 3B or the outfield he'd be an amazing get. look at Mitchell Nau - catcher - Tx A+M George Iskenderian - if - Miami with kerian, he comes from a great program. and is a ss, i don't see the power for a 3b and i mean sustainable power. a sleeper i really like besides Thompson is Zander Wiel Vandy. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 01:29 PM) Sox have been extremely lucky, but also props to the fo for doing what others wouldnt. with re to last yr, i wouldn't say "wouldn't", i would say couldn't. this is b/c of Hahn's doing. -
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 01:31 PM) Right, but how? Free agents are over priced by a ton. The don't want to use high draft choices on hitters. Development of the ones they do have isn't going all that well. I think what they've done best is trade for major league ready prospects (Avi, Quentin, Eaton) but those trades are hard to find. You start forcing them and you fail. Had Peralta not gotten hurt they would have ended up with Middlebrooks or Bradley Jr all excellent points. i will wait until day 2 is over. but the sox may need to go the KW route, by overpaying in trades. i have been saying this since the new yr, this yr, the int't draft yr, starting July 2, the sox needs to address 3 positions. maybe 2 if stretching it. nah 3. the closest to help will be the cuban market, let alone the cubans who are playing in Japan. since the new deal may come into effect, there are a crap load of superstars cubans who didn't want to give up their citizenship and is just crying for a sox uni...... then the rest of the int'l players, sign some of the top 5-10, regardless ...... they will take the longest to develop.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 01:33 PM) Great article. I think taking anyone but Fulmer at #8 would have been mistake for us and this article explains why. Dude has the stuff to be a top of the rotation starter and to be one very quickly. Would have hated to watch us pass on him, only to see the Cubs snag him at #9. with that, i totally agree. this was the best selection at this slot. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 01:59 PM) Just to recap, the two articles Future Sox published on Fulmer... 1. The newsy, fact-heavy post 2. The scouting deep dive Both are excellent and you should read them. Dan and Alex worked the newsy one together (yes THAT Alex, back from the dead), and Will did the scouting piece. Both referenced Jeff's pre-draft profile. All-around work to get these done. i also like to add, wasn't Fulmer conference was one of the toughest conf. -

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 01:08 PM) Yea there was a few things I disagreed with in Q's post, but Sale is as close to a no brain #1 as it is. imho Sale is a #1 as the ceiling and floor. -

i just wanted to add this final tidbit, at least for Fulmer. how can any young pitcher not be extra excited, going #8, nice payday for yrs of hard work. on top of that, going to an org who has one of the games best pitching coach and a great pitching staff in the game today. -

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 11:06 AM) Nice stuff. Curious as to what Thaddius Lowry has that puts him in the same bracket as Montas, Danish and Adams though. i know..... i really need to see more of him. i am totally amazed on how he just went out there and silently put himself on the radar as a major viable sox prospect. where i was really disappoint in Lopez, i think that is his name, the one that was released from the sox last week, they find gems like Lowry. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 05:38 AM) I'm higher on Danish than most, for what it's worth. But this is all of their potentials if they hit their ceilings...floors... Sale: Ace a weak #1 Samardzjia: Good #3 strong 4, i think we saw this already Quintana: Good #3 Rodon: #4 as of right now, i agree. still not enuf time Fulmer: Bullpen Montas: Bullpen Adams: #5 solid #3 strong #4 Danish: #5 Also imagine a rotation with Sale, Rodon, Samardzjia, Quintana and Fulmer/Danish. The intensity would be beyond insane. Quintana would look like the quietest pitcher in the universe. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 11:18 AM) I think we need to see what they do in Latin America. I'm really hoping they decide to go all out for the 2015 signing season, starting with Eddy Julio Martinez. Obviously that is a long-shot, but they need to find a way to infuse some position talent into the system and with an international draft likely around the corner, this may be time to game the system. The problem is we aren't the only one thinking this way. with this, i am really on board. -

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 10:35 AM) I'm delighted with the Sox pick, I'm just concerned with the fact that they have just 1 pick in the first 3 rounds and are missing out on some impact hitting talent that the system badly needs i am with you on this, but i also have to keeping reminding myself, this was a weak draft. the sox went out and got the BPA in their slot. with that, i am happy. but hitters, there are still a slew of college juniors and seniors hitters avail. now they may not be superstar, but i believe, with luck, they may be serviceable everyday players. the kind that will help patch a team full of holes. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 06:32 AM) There's not much out there about what Bregman wants financially but he had a floor when he was drafted out of HS and it couldn't be met. The slot for this pick is well over that amount so he may be happy with anything over what his floor was three years ago. Tucker is committed to Florida but reports are that he'll sign, the expectation is that he'll likely take something near slot. Cameron is the issue. He dropped because of signability concerns. However, rumors have been out there since the fall that there were more potential pre-draft deals in the works than previous years. It's possible that there is already an agreed upon amounts for over slot and he just priced himself out of everyone else's budget to block them drafting him. Either way, the savings that may be possible from Bregman will help sign him. The Astros are not the type of organization that would risk drafting him without having plenty of confidence in being able to sign him. They'll also likely save money with future picks that will likely consist of one or two seniors. And, there's a chance that Eshelman signs below slot as he is was rated much lower by BA but has nothing to gain by returning for his senior season. Day one is in the books and Astros fans have to love the results. http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2015/6/8/8750...day-one-wrap-up http://blog.chron.com/ultimateastros/2015/...dians-at-no-17/ On Brady Aiken. http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2...ke_injured.html i am in agreement that Hou fleeced the whole competition, esp if they signed Comeron. -
