  1. Right on Aboz. I4E, please stop the personal attacks on other posters. And I have read the articles that Apu posted and they are from credible places--and I've heard MANY of the same stats he cites in my Judeo-Christian classes. So, just stop flaming him and other people who disagree with you--it doesn't create the type of atmosphere that we all would like to have here, i.e. one that is condusive to discussion.

Meh, I don't see how Mel saying that is any different from regular Christians saying only Christians going to heaven--and then saying--well Gandhi was a great person, but he's damned. I agree that exclusivist ideology is sad--be it just for Catholics or for just one religion.

No, the biggest problem really is that it's a rather conservative and vocal Christian minority that thinks they can convert me by condemning me. I had a lovely high school experience. But I think sometimes I should have gone to a public university.

Oh, okay. Here's a Dramatic Version. All Rights Reserved. Professor Of Boredoom: Blah, blah, blah, blah. Abortion (firestorm of hands in the air--Soxy stars blankly out the window at the beautiful Minnesota night sky and envisions picking up her diploma) Kid 1: Abortion is the killing of a human being and has no place in a civilized society. Kid 2: I agree. Kid 3: I agree--as it says in the Bible (quotes bible verse number--but doesn't actually say verse) you need to respect life. Soxy: Um, so, Bioethically, this relates to... Professor: Well, this is one of the fundamental issues in Bioethics. Kid: I don't see how this is in question at all--it's just wrong. If you don't want children don't have sex. Soxy: What about married people that have abortions? Kid: Married people don't have abortions. Soxy: Oh. Okay. Kid: The point is abortion is a sin and if you like abortion you are a sinner and going to hell because God does not and cannot forgive murderers. Soxy: Well, I guess I disagree with you. Kid: (I swear he said this) I'll pray for you. Soxy: Thanks but I can pray for myself.

That's my number 1 fear actually. Gah, I'll wake up in a cold sweat just thinking about that.....

Actually the BioMed prof was a woman--and she didn't say anything which was worse. So, we got into the typical small private Christian school debate: Abortion is a sin and everyone that thinks it should be legal is going straight to hell. So, I said good thing I've got my ticket ready to be stamped. And, well, it actually managed to go downhill from there. But, that's sort of been every class I've taken here. Which is funny, because they are actually posters up all over campus complaining about the "liberal bias" in the classroom--but I can think of at least 4 classes where I've been told I'm hellbound in. And that's not too liberal. Nor is that particularly compassionate conservatism...Meh, at least this prof is fun. I'll keep you updated with the Condemnation Count.
  8. I just read the Mets, Yankees, and Cubs board and they all are saying that it's the Yankees that are talking to Maddux. So he's either changed his mind (cough$$$cough) or the reports are false...Hm, the plot thickens.

The professor was just horrible. And all we talked about was abortion and assisted suicide. It was me against the class--and I thought, you know what: I'd rather be told I'm going to hell in a religion class. It should have been a good class but when profs don't stop personal attacks on students with minority opnions it isn't worth my time. So, no thank you. I love, love, love this religion prof, so I figure it should be better.

On the plus side, I got out of my stupid Biomedical Ethics class--and into The Ethics of Jesus--so after I see the movie you can hear me rant even more educatedly about it.... Oh, I love my school. First Jesus the Class, now Ethics of Jesus. I could have a concentration in Jesus!!!!! Hm, I'm going to look into that....

    Just in case...

s***. Good thing I vetoed the Pin the clit on the vulva and vibrator ring toss game. Two out of three isn't bad. Why do I have a feeling before I graduate from college I'll be spending time in jail for some obscenity law violation? Bail money anyone?

Here's a shameless plug--but all the money goes to a good cause so, I don't feel too bad. Around V-day there's always the performances of the Vagina Monologues. So, you can always go and see those. It's usually cheap to see them. Tickets are usually under $10 at Universities--and lots of us are college students, so if you don't have plans I recommend going. And, voila I have a link to the list of colleges that are performing them and when. http://www.vday.org/contents/vcampaigns/college/schools Anyway, it also lists what organization is benefitting from the performance. It's usually the local crisis shelter or someplace like that. The monologues are great--and it's a great website as well--so please look through it. Okay, shameless plug is over. And have a great V-day--no matter what your V may stand for.

    TV Shows

When I was little I think Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) did a TV show about Iowa--but I could be remembering wrong...I don't know if there's one still on...
  16. The only question that remains now is if this will be treated as a war crime by the UN...The way the US treats this actually could create a precedent...Since rape is a war crime--could intra-army rape also be a war crime by keeping certain soldier's "in their place?" Should be interesting. Great story for Valentine's day Apu...
  17. Well, pardon my language but, oh f***. As a certified advocate for survivors of sexual abuse there are lots of red flags to me in this article: 1.) They have to wait to RETURNING from duty. Meaning they are not getting immediate treatment for the assault--but psychological and medical. This is one of the worst and most damaging things that we worry about. 2.) 37 cases were reported. The FBI and the DOJ ( http://www.feminist.com/antiviolence/facts.html ) estimates that between 26% and 37% of assaults are reported--so this is probably a MUCH larger problem than they are seeing. And I would argue where rank is considered (as in the army) much less women are coming forward because of the power issue. 3.) The women are left in the same place as their alleged attackers? What the hell? This is complete revictimization--and should be considered a re-rape by the U.S. government. Not acceptable--they are leaving themselves WIDE open for a lawsuit, which the women WILL win. 4.) The Vietnam report shows that this is a pattern behavior with at least 20% of female veterans reporting problems with this issue. Clearly we are not dealing with this in a timely matter. They have been many research studies that show we CAN properly educate for change--victim empathy and compassion can be fostered by even 1 hour of interaction with a survivor of sexual abuse. Why the Government has not taken advantage of this knowledge I do not know. 5.) If anyone will be in the Twin Cities next weekend I'm presenting on the topic the Roots of Sexual Violence and Educating for Change at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum (Jimmy Carter will be there) at St. Olaf College on Saturday....You'll hear me and my best friend talk about this and more. Apu thanks for this article--it just shows the far reaching need for education.....

I just meant the Bible shouldn't be looked at as a HISTORY book--but as a book to inspire faith. And that people might take this movie to be actual history. I think that movie makers should have some responsiblity--especially when there is such a strong and dangerous anti-Jewish feelings.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I think that it was almost entirely done by the Romans at their own initiative. I also disagree that the Bible was ever meant as a historical document. The earliest Gospel wasn't even begun to be composed during Jesus' lifetime--so I don't necessarily think that makes it the most accurate record of history.

Oh, fair enough. Sorry, that's just my pet peeve about this movie and well Christianity in general. And I don't think it's just the Catholic Church. I go to an ELCA Lutheran school--and you'd be surprised by the number of "Liberal" protestant demoninations that produce kids that believe the same thing...

But that's the problem with the Bible. It is a book of FAITH, not a book of HISTORY. When Christians want to deepen their faith they should look to the Bible. When they want to learn History they should read history books. The truth is Romans used crucifixtion to kill those who broke ROMAN laws. I have no problem with the Bible--it's a beautiful work of art and it inspires millions of people to better themselves. But it is not a history book--and we do no service to ourselves as people who are trying to learn to treat it as such. I am not saying people need to look at Jesus as a historical figure--but the ROMANS crucified Jesus, NOT the Jews. Even the sign the bible says hung above Jesus (INRI) seems to imply a crime against ROME. (King of the Jews--he was usurping ROMAN rule...)
