QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 09:55 AM) Maybe KW has a good relationship with the Thompson family? The only negative I heard about our first day picks was that some think Mitchell was going to be there at 38, and Phegley there for our 3rd pick. Oh well, I'm sure someone we think will be good will suck, and vice versa. Our first day was good. I'd compare Phegley to a Kurk Suzuki. Great hitter, great leader, not sure whether he'll be able to stick behind the plate in the pro's or not but well worth taking a shot on. I'm going to have to guess Kenny knows Michael Thompson and feels a deal will get done.

They say his strikeouts went up because he tended to go down looking a lot. It was the first season where he had an extended time to practice baseball as he was granted a break by the football coach and he improved tremendously. Everything that has been written about him (and I'll have to go off of that cause I haven't seen the guy play more than once or twice (on tv) and watched some video) talks about how much he's improved each and every season. To me thats a great thing, especially when this will be the first time he's ever focused solely on baseball.

Jones also featurs a 12-6 curve and a changeup. Jones velocity has increased by 2-3 MPH over the past season so he might be a real projectable kid. He pitches in the upper 80's but has topped out at 93. Buch looks like another real nice pickup. I am glad to see the Sox stockpiling arms and as I've mentioned, I hope those three picks were guys that they think have potential and were easy signs because they have a plan to take a guy late and give him big bucks or at least make sure they give Thompson the money.
-
I hope the Sox first three selections, which were atrocious, are a sign that they plan on giving Thompson the big bucks it'll take to sign.
-
I like the Jones pick. Has shown low 90's velocity, but doesn't currently sit there. Nice frame, good command for a youngster, good attitude. Sounds like he's signable for the right price.

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 09:40 AM) Hudson and Carter both gave up less hits than IP, and both had better strikeout numbers. Hitters have no problem with Collops stuff apparently. Both also had very good pitchers bodies. Collop is very lean and not super tall so we better hope he has a pretty electric arm. I have major doubts, but again, I still say its a terrible pick. Again, not knocking the individual, rather the timing of the move.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 09:37 AM) I really dont care about the stats. I mean, look at Hudson and Carter, if we can get guys with live arms and have a good chance at fixing their mechanics or whatever to improve them, then Im fine with the pick. Just dont give me a crap pitcher who also doesnt have the stuff just because you want to go cheap. I can't find anything other than he has a 2-seamer fastball. This is just flat out embarassing by the White Sox.

Bahaha fathom, the first big international signing (non cuban) they make will be well, there first. They are international virgins when it comes to the big international free agency front.
-
Collop 9th best starter in the Valley (Summer League). Small stature guy. Not sure on his stuff.

QUOTE (wsgdf_2 @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 09:26 AM) I read somewhere he's 6'5" but already lost the link. Here are his numbers from 2009: http://www.maxpreps.com/california/basebal...yer&group=2 3.14 ERA in 58 IP with 56 K and 14 BB Ya, he's 6-5 with upside is about the best thing I could find. He was his teams #1 as a junior.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 09:18 AM) Not very exciting from that. Not at all. The last two picks we made were flat out f***ing reaches. Awful selections. I'm not saying they can't be good baseball players, but these were cheapo picks and I guarantee it will show when you see the bonuses they kid compared to other guys in the round. I like the 4th rounders body, know nothing else about him.
-
Apparently our 4th round pick is committed to UCR, who has a decent program, but nothing special out in the Big West. Had a 2.06 ERA in 74 innings of work with 72K's. No clue on what his stuff is. On second note, here's what I found: I'm wondering if he is a guy that was hurt in 09?

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 09:13 AM) I can't find anything on Heidenreich, anyone else having any luck? http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?content_id=4674627 Wrong high school down, here is some video.

QUOTE (Fantl916 @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 09:09 AM) Madison Youginer is still out there... another high upside HS arm. Hopefully the Sox can nab him in the 5th He probably won't sign, without a well above slot offer. Given the Sox latest pick, I'm pretty sure it ain't in the budget.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:08 PM) Interesting. He topped out at 89 in the short MLB video. It didn't make sense for a 6'4 kid to not be able to throw even 90 consistently. Everyone says he maintains his velocity deep into games which is a big plus for a prep arm as well. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 05:51 AM) The couraging thing about Mitchell is that by his senior year his K/BB rate had gotten to almost one. The kid seems to be learning the strike zone. I believe he's a junior.

Sam Dyson is still out there right?

I don't know how you guys can really slam Holmberg. He throws 88-91 as a lefty, kind of like most major league lefties do. And he has a good feel as a prep. He should only advance further along if they sign him. I really want Thompson to sign, get him signed along with Mitchell and Phlegey and I can look past some of our potential overdrafts, etc. -

Big time power arm. Sounds like a guy they'll move to the back end of the pen but who knows. -

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 06:45 PM) Basically sounds like Buehrle. Fastball, changeup, curve. Lefty, smart PITCHER not thrower. I'm sure we could have gotten him later though. Don't be so sure. He was widely considered one of the better preps in the country. Went right around where he was projected or at least within 20 or so picks. I don't think a guy at this point who would go within a round of when you got him would be considered a reach, imo. -

#51 on BA's list of top 100 high schoolers earlier in the season. Not sure where he ranks currently. In fact, went right where he was slated, lots of mocks had him going in the 2nd round, Sickels on 5/15 had him going 51 to the Angels. Below are various reports that I found on the web. Sounds interesting. Like that he has good movement and he at least maintains his velocity.
