  1. QUOTE (Steff @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 06:54 PM) :bulls***rolleyes Again, Steff, read the whole damn thread and its context before trying to call me out. I think I made my point pretty clear if you read past the first post you wanted to throw piss all over me for.
  2. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 06:51 PM) Out of curiousity, kap, do you think that is an issue the fed gov't should be tackling. Education? Is that what you're asking?
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 06:50 PM) Nobody is trying to be against and afraid of Christianity nor its crazies. I just feel like faith and the Church is very out of place in an event where a Federal official who represents all races, creeds and religions is being sworn in. I mean, isnt it a BIT weird that there was almost a mini religious service right before a civic ceremony was held? It just doesnt belong there. Would you call it a "civil ceremony"?
  4. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 06:48 PM) Or not have voted. And this just doesn't include "black" people. Minorities in general(which I am), believe Obama will solve their money problems, or social problems. And kap, those remaining people who would have voted Democratic, probably would not have voted at all. Not just black people, a ton of people. I don't know about that. McCain, in a losing effort, still got a hell of a lot of votes. I just think that this was one of those elections where people felt like they had a choice for the first time in a long time. I may not agree with Obama, but I respect his position and he ran an excellent campaign.
  5. QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 06:46 PM) Everyone's always so threatened by Christianity. Last I checked, the radical Muslims are far ahead of the radical Christians in the body count. Relax. No pastors are coming to your home and forcing a bible down your throat. Mute the TV if you don't like prayer. I was threatened by Rick Warren's feeble attempt at a invocation. That was so horrible.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 10:28 AM) I'll tell you what I'd like to see, in terms of education costs... we need to do more about tax shelters for early child care. Its just a reality now that most families have two working parents, and day care is absurdly expensive. Like, more than tuition at most colleges (even private) per year. Its absolutely insane. If its two kids, you are talking about more money than the majority of Americans take home every year. QUOTE (Soxy @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 11:50 AM) Honestly, something needs to be done about education from birth on up. Word. I think that somehow, there has to be a "re-education" on what fosters a real learning environment - an emphasis on critical thinking... I know that's hard to do with little kids, but be onvolved is the biggest thing. So how do we involve parents who don't want to be involved (it's the school's job to teach my kids, not me)? That's the biggest drain, IMO, on our system. I think what Soxy is saying is more generalized then that - but I struggle with this now being a parent and seeing other kids my kids age with their parents not teaching them manners, etc. What do we do about that? /threadjack.
  7. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 06:36 PM) imagine the outcry if it was a muslim prayer. Someone else said that and it would have gotten no outrage from me. If he would have bowed to the porcelin god right there on stage, his inauguration, his choice on what he wants to do. That was the point being made all along for those who like to play thread police.
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 05:47 PM) I find your arguments very one dimensional. People just voted for Obama because he was black. But why? Why did they just vote for Obama for his skin color, and not for other black candidates who have run for president. Do people really expect Obama to save their lives? Or are they just celebrating what they finally is true representation in this government. Your statements only work at a very basic level, and ignore previous history, cultural contexts and really undermine the motives of the voters you are trying to profile. I'm sure they would love to paint you with a broad brush too. I think this is really meant for nite and not you bmags but I would say a very small fraction of the voting population voted for Obama purely because he was black - say 2-3% at most. The remaining black people would have voted for any white Democrat and it makes no difference in this election cycle.
  9. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 06:32 PM) I watched the oath again, and at first I thought it was Obama that blew it both times. Now what it looks like what happened is Obama interrupted Roberts on the first line, which seemed to throw Roberts off, and Roberts gave him the wrong words for the second line. Obama paused after a couple of words and nodded at Roberts to give the correct words. Obama paused to see if Roberts was going to correct himself. That was kind of funny, actually. What did you think, being there (or did I miss that in the thread?)
  10. QUOTE (Steff @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 03:19 PM) Oh I'm reading it. BS agreed with Rock and they get their asses jumped on. Typical buster thread ruined. It's clear some here hate the POTUS and all he stands for and what he may or may not do. On the PH board folks would be told to stay out of threads they don't have a positive contribution for. The hypocrisy is stinker than a formula diaper. Nevermind. I thought better of it.
  11. QUOTE (Steff @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 03:11 PM) I didn't mind it, and I sure don't mind you saying you do. But some people just can't let anything go, can they. And that's where it should be left. Instead, it kept going. Read the rest of the thread. People should be able to say and do what they want... and then that's it.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 03:10 PM) What? Newt's infidelity was one of his major downfalls. For Clinton, "it didn't matter".
  13. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 03:09 PM) I think he got out of the car because it was gonna take 7 hours to get to the White House.
  14. This is one of the hardest things to say about Obama. He will "represent" us well simply because he's extremely articulate and "likeable". I know his policy is one I will not like. I know that I disagree wholeheartedly about "we'll talk to anyone" deal - because that's a trap waiting to happen. But he is charasmatic, and that will get him a long way no matter how awful his presidency is or is not.
  15. Newt is a historian. I wish he knew how to keep his pants zipped up, but that's another story. Funny how he's judged so poorly for that and Clinton's episodes "didn't matter". With that said, Newt is a very, very smart politician - no matter what party affiliation he is.
  16. I'm on tape delay... I keep having to pause it because of kids, etc. I'm almost caught up so now you ruined it for me.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 02:45 PM) If they did a 15 minute Muslim or Hindi ritual I could only imagine the posts I'd be seeing here right now. Waaaaaaah. Prayer! OMG! It's the choice of the people running the ceremonies. Who cares what they do?
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 12:11 PM) This is why spending is the absolute wrong plan if the economy is in such immediate danger as we keep getting told. Don't miss the line that states that only $26 billion of the $355 in appropraitions would actually be spent in 2009. Things like tax cuts and extended benefits hit peoples pocketbooks immediately. The rest of the appropriations are just pork barrel stuff, and have no business being passed off as a stimulus plan. That goes for both the green energy and the construction plans. The merits of it being needed can be debated, but there is no question this will do nothing for the near term economy in the US. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=206...&refer=home This is completely bogus. It's not a stimulus plan, it's a plan to shove everything down our throat in one massive pork barrell bill. That's why we keep being told "how bad it is" so they can push this s*** through.
  19. QUOTE (Soxy @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 02:41 PM) Why didn't Lowery get the invocation? His was at least not complete blather. Rick Warren was completely awful.
  20. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 02:41 PM) The inauguration is a state function not a religious function. I find it completely unnecessary to perform religious ceremonies during something like this. Wow. People can't give anything a rest, can they?
  21. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 02:07 PM) My Senator's comments on CNN makes me realize again what an ass he is. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 02:19 PM) What did he say? QUOTE (Texsox @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) Basically, and to paraphrase a little, when asked about Kennedy's collapse "Well you know we do not agree philosophically or politically, but he has been around forty years." Bulls***. That's completely out of context. His comments immediately before what Tex's paraphrase was "People are often surprised when I am asked who I most look up to in the Senate and I say Teddy Kennedy". Then he said what Tex said, and that's a completely different point. Let's stop the horse s*** now, ok?
  22. There's still a lot of stuff we don't know. I would say more like 15 years from now, when some of the records are released... we will be able to judge better.
  23. That's too bad, BS - I know you really wanted to go. You worked your ass off for what you believe in, which is more then a lot of us do. Enjoy your day.
  24. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 08:17 PM) World War 2 started because of war debts not being forgiven between the United States and European nations, in particular France. Part of this was due to the lack of any forum for France to make it's case as the United States backed out of the League of Nations. After the US refused to ignore the war debts of France, France cranked up pressure on the Germans for reparations and it led to a global economic collapse that was completely unprecedented. Germany nor France could appeal to the United States for relief due to the absence of the US at the League of Nations. International Relations 101: When modern countries are reduced to nothing and are ignored in the international system the likelihood of irrational behavior by that country increases exponentially. America was naughty, isolationist and selfish... so we got Hitler in our stocking for Christmas. World War II was going to start regardless of what you say here - the war was accelarated only in part (I say a small part) because of this. I know that you're trying to tie in the fact that the US nationalism (isolationism) was the main reason for the war and subsequent economic collapse of Europe, but that's not exactly what happened, if I recall my history correct. The League of Nations wasn't for the types of "greviences" you're listing, at least (again) if I remember right. And I might not.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 12:30 PM) http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNew...E50G1PQ20090117 I commented about this earlier. Everyone's talking about the cost of Obama's inauguration, but he's not even really paying for it. It's all the people who will be paying off his staff for the next 4 years.
