  1. QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 03:22 PM) Recipes are quite possibly the very stupidest part of presidential campaigns. A few things -- We don't know that Cindy McCain even picked this (wasn't it just some staffer/intern the time before?), so I wouldn't say she plagiarized without knowing more. Two, I don't think putting out recipes is an attempt to make someone look "down home". It's just an accepted (though nonetheless totally idiotic) part of any prez campaign. They basically have to do it, so I wouldn't read any intent into it. And honestly, this may well have been her recipe as far as she knew. I don't know where half of my recipes came from, but if I ever published them, I'm sure 90% would be unchanged from whatever source I took them from. And finally...I still can't believe anyone cares a whit about all this cookie recipe crap. Obama's wife cooks better. Cindy McCain says so. That's it! I know who I'm voting for now! What a joke this whole presidential race is.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 03:09 PM) I do not think it is ridiculous at all. We have the most progressive tax system in the world. The top 1% earners make 19% of the income of this country, and pay 37% of total taxes. The top 10% pays 68% of all taxes. The bottom 50% of tax payers earn 13% of all income and pay only 3% of all taxes. The bottom two quintiles actually have a NEGATIVE tax rate. Yet everytime I turn on the TV, I hear about the rich people raping America. There is so much misinformation out there on this, its astounding. Pushing so hard for more taxes and punishment for the rich is getting silly anymore. Our corporate tax rates are among the highest in the free world. http://www.american.com/archive/2007/novem...-pays-the-taxes But we need (insert government program here) to take care of everything for us!! And the rich, damn them, will PAY! Yes, that's Kaperbole, but it's not far off from the way that a lot of Democrats think.
  3. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 02:32 PM) Socialism? LOL That's why it's in quotes, sir. But, the reality is, it's closer to socialism then capitalism on that spectrum and you can't deny that.
  4. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 01:33 PM) And you look at his policies, and you figure he believes he's doing the right thing, but you think said policies are going to be ineffective or otherwise bad. I think ineffective and otherwise bad is about right. "Socialism" (read: redistribition of wealth) is just not something I'm too interested in, and that's pretty much all he's about.
  5. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 12:27 PM) I think the Carter comparison is from people who think Obama is a nice guy who means well but is going to be an ineffective leader, just like Carter was. Not me, anyway. It comes straight from looking at his policies.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 16, 2008 -> 11:31 AM) I guess Obama is scared to debate McCain... McCain wanted 10 townhall meetings, and instead has proposed just one, and that was on the 4th of July. In football, this would be known as the prevent defense. http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/elec...-townhall_N.htm I LOVE that line. In fact...
  7. This is one of the few media people that I actually respected as well. The guy was straight and didn't play the games that most of them do.
  8. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 15, 2008 -> 11:13 PM) The Sox are in first place, which is good. Many of us long time Sox fans, however, are not excited at all. My question is ... are we too demanding on this team? Should we be elated at what's going on and our postseason chances? Or are we long-time, loyal Sox fans aware when we have a special team and when we do not, and we are correct in thinking this team is the worst first-place team imaginable? This team has had some really big flops in certain series. What is the verdict?? Should we be elated with our first-place White Sox and should we shut up about our horrid offense and streakiness?? How about somewhere in the middle? Oh, that's right, that would be too much to ask. Enjoy the good times, don't worry about the bad ones.
  9. QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Jun 15, 2008 -> 01:54 PM) Aha! I knew it! McCain's prayer: Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy low tax on capital gains, thy Kingdom come, Social Security undone (or not -- I'll get back to you), on earth, as we know there are no hand-outs in Heaven. Give us this day our midday nap, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Even Mexicans, a little. (Except for Cornyn, that f***ing chicken s***.) And lead us not into deliberations that go on and on and zzzzzzzzzzzzz...but deliver us from evil. I mean, you already did us a solid on that one with Hillary, and I appreciate it. Amen. Nice one.
  10. Don't get me wrong, I agree with that point. But, it's amazing to me how this guy is "perfect" in every sense of the word to some people.
  11. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 15, 2008 -> 10:38 AM) at least he cared enough to actually go. Obama cares more then anyone else, ever, running for political office. I'm glad.
  12. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 14, 2008 -> 09:37 PM) Katrina- Bush watches from a plane McCain votes AGAINST investigations. Iowa Floods - McCain "prays" from a distance Obama rolls up the sleeves and helps Oh for crying out loud. It's called a PHOTO OP. Give it a rest, Obamatron 2008, Model Athomeboy_2000.
  13. Holy crap. That's pretty unexpected.
  14. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 13, 2008 -> 08:14 AM) During the Depression... lol It just trips me out when people think that we can do away with all regulatory bodies, and then they cite the fact that the 1880s (which was practically the Wild West) had some of the most success for businesses ever. Well yeah... it was also some of the most corrupt and abusive to workers, too. I don't really want to return to that. I understand you can't have a 100% "free market", but I also don't think government should be "running" anything such as health care, for example.
  15. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 13, 2008 -> 07:26 AM) There is a balance though. I mean I'm all about "OMG FREE MARKET" but there has to be some form of government intervention so it doesn't get out of control (because it will), although not to the point of socialist-style price controlling etc. And it has to be done the right way or the free market will be f***ed up worse. Case in point: Health care industry You think the health care industry is bad now? Wait until the government screws it up but good.
  16. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 13, 2008 -> 08:20 AM) That's hyperbole. Yep, that's where "Kaperbole" ™ comes in. It drives me crazy to think that the Democrats think that the government should have all these programs, when time and time again it's shown privitization is more effective then the government will ever be, in anything.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 13, 2008 -> 08:01 AM) Thank you for posting that. This is EXACTLY what I want John McCain to bring to the debates and here is why. When Jimmy Carter the second starts in about the economy, John McCain can put a torpedo right into his hull by mentioning the damage that this tax plan will do to our economy. Who hires people in this country? Its the rich people. What happens when rich people lose money? They cut costs. What is the #1 cost in a company? Employees. So is the rich guy going to take a paycut, or fire the poor guy? Bye, bye, poor guy. Don't believe me? I really, really hope this comes up. Here is some info on history when income taxes are raised. http://www.nber.org/digest/mar08/w13264.html Here is some perspective on who would get hit in a FICA cap removal, interesting to note that Barack would be hitting some of the most heavily Democratic territory in the country with CA, NY, and IL getting hit the most. The rich certainly aren't taking care of us, so the government should! http://www.heritage.org/Research/SocialSecurity/CDA01-07.cfm Some research on corporate taxes http://www.aei.org/publications/pubID.2785.../pub_detail.asp It's ok, because the government can run things and take care of us all, so all of our money should just go to the government so that they can take care of everything for us. It works so well in China, why not? Redistribution of wealth is against everything this country is set up to do.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 07:06 PM) Well, one potential difference with canada is that there are likely (I assume) treaties that have the force of law that cover that area also, whereas with the Taliban and Al Qaeda there certainly aren't. However, naturally I'll agree that without those treaties, the constitution should still stand in force. (Of course, one would then make the argument that the geneva conventions are also a treaty and therefore also have the rule of law...) Which goes back to my point of they need to be brought up on charges, as called for by INTERNATIONAL LAW that governs this, not the U.S. Constitution. That's the distinction to me.
  19. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 06:48 PM) If these people are bad news for us, we should have a reason to keep them imprisoned. That would mean a charge of some sort that can be prosecuted in a court of law. Holding someone, anyone, prisoner for years upon years without a stated reason or charge is just not acceptable. If an American citizen ended up caught up in some sort of civil unrest in say China, and was treated this way, I get the feeling many of the people who support the Supreme Court's dissenters would have a different view. I agree with the fact that they need to be charged or let go, but I also have problems with non-citizens being covered by the constitution, even with Soxbadger's post.
  20. I just cannot justify applying the constitution to non-US citizens.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 11:37 AM) The other side of that coin is, why should they have to? Its their profits, they can spend it how they want. If this other stuff really is this profitable, there will be plenty of private equity dollars flying at these projects. No one is forcing any other groups to do specific things when they have record profits. In the end, they will do what is most profitable, which is exactly how business should behave in the United States. And to me, that's the farce. Alternative energy is NOT profitable. That's why no one has invested in it.
  22. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jun 11, 2008 -> 03:17 PM) The neighborhood Greek joint does a 1/2 lb platter with a side of sliced pita and tzaziki, so I bought a platter and cut up the meat for the dish and had the pita and sauce as a bonus. That's something I have to find in Dallas/Fort Worth - a place that does good gyros. I know they're around, I have to make it a mission.
  23. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 07:19 AM) Classy. Terrorist jab and now this. Scum of the Earth if you ask me. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 07:33 AM) It amazes me that some people are still deluded into the idea that Fox News is only as far right as the MSM is far left. Really, I am not just saying this, it really does amaze me. I mean, its not even close. The MSM leans left, no doubt (though there is variation there, depending on the network). But Fox News is just blatantly, intentionally, fully in the right gutter. How is it that people can't see this? This is just plain ignorant. If this is all they have, Obama will win all 50 states.
  24. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jun 11, 2008 -> 08:46 AM) You know those nights where you're absolutely craving breakfast food for dinner? Lastnight was one of those nights, and I tried my hand at cooking something called the Greek Hobo that I saw on that Diners and Dives Food Network show a few weeks back. Grilled, hand-grated hash browned potatoes topped with grilled mushrooms and onions, gyro meat and eggs, and the whole thing topped with melted feta. Wow. I have a new all-time favorite breakfast meal. Opah!! :headbang So where do you get gyro meat?
