QUOTE (CWSGuy406 @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 11:28 AM) Wow... I just got a call from the head of this program at MU saying that I've been granted a job interview tonight for one of the Accounting internship positions. I thought nothing was going to come of the 'workshop' that was held this weekend, and just like that... an interview. Anyone have any general tips, anything I can do to prepare? Obviously I'm going to want to research the company more. As far as what to bring (besides my winning personality -- BOO YAH!)... it's fair for me, the interviewee, to bring a pen and something to write on, yes? Boy am I nervous. EDIT: My main question is what I should bring... Resume? Cover letter? Writing utensils and (obviously) something to write on? References? If I bring the references, can I just have those at the bottom of my resume? And -- I wasn't really expecting this, so this has jumped up on me and it's why I'm not terribly prepared -- do I need specifics with those references? The single biggest thing when you get an interview that you can't really prepare for all that well (and take it from someone who has been looking for someone for three months now to fill a position) is be comfortable in who you are and don't blow smoke up someone's ass. Answer directly, honestly, and again, I can't say it enough, be confident, but not cocky. Besides that, give concrete, tangible examples to questions that they ask... what are your strengths? Be able to confidently answer that. What are your weaknesses? Same thing - be confident in your answers and don't him-haw around.

QUOTE(The Beast @ Apr 2, 2008 -> 02:35 PM) I don't get what all the fuss is about over getting drunk. It's a buzz created by alcohol. Woo hoo. I could get a buzz off of my daily 3 mile run or having Mountain Dew and Lemonheads while gaming with friends. I guess my question is, why should I need to know what it is like? I'm going to be more direct then others have been. Don't post in these threads anymore, or you won't be posting here anymore, period. Everyone here knows your stances, and you don't need to start preaching to everyone in every thread about it. I hope you're smart enough to understand this and not comment on it anymore.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Apr 2, 2008 -> 10:29 AM) As a person who ships pretty expensive, sensitive equipment all over the world. I can tell you, that all carriers have issues. Fedex - Was shipped one Dell 1750 server overnight. The box, which looked like a Wolverine had attacked the box was delivered to my office. The servers rack ears were bent back, and the entire right side of the server was caved in. When we popped the top off to get the raid card, there were loose chips that had popped off the mother board. You know you had a case of server soccer when the soddered chips pop off. DHL - Sent a Juniper firewall to Asia. The box showed up, and when they opened it, it was 20 pairs of womens shoes sent to Marge in Ohio with a note from her sister. UPS - Box with server came to our site. The bottom of the server box looked warped. It seemed a bit heavier than the usual box. When we took the server out of the box, water came out of the back of the server. You could try a little airline that is based in Dallas-Fort Worth. They fly the forwarder's junk around. They are Kitty Hawk... oh wait a minute, they don't exist anymore... Dude, I could tell you some stories about freight like this that would scare you. I spent hours and hours and hours in hubs and outstations for air cargo. It's an interesting business. And your packages will arrive on time, every time... or something...

QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Apr 2, 2008 -> 12:54 PM) we are canning DHL at the office here too... nothing like sending a package to say Chicago from the burbs and DHL sending it to Ohio first. Well, FedEx will send it to Memphis instead of Ohio, but whatever floats your boat.

QUOTE(Disco72 @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 08:12 AM) One solution discussed by us eggheads (academics) is moving towards more of a stakeholder perspective for compensation rather than just a stockholder perspective. Not sure that it would work in this particular case (and I'm not an expert on this part of corporate governance theory). However, a stakeholder perspective takes into account the others (from employees to the environment) that are affected by the decisions of organizations. Lots of issues to be worked out, but I think it is an interesting idea. That's something that wouldn't work. You think there's fraud now? I hear what you're saying (this is more of a utopian perspective on business) but I think that opens pandora's box on what's "right" to be focused on. What stakeholder's interests are louder? It's the effect we see in the political arena every day and is subject to much more grey area in terms of measurement.

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 2, 2008 -> 09:52 PM) Congrats to Ramirez on getting his first hit. I might be annoyed with him right now, but it doesn't mean I won't like him throughout his Sox career. You won't like anyone throughout their Sox career. -
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Apr 1, 2008 -> 06:52 PM) Crawford, McGee, Taber, Thomas, and Fink are expected returners from this year's team. Matt Roth and Tom Pritchard intended on coming to IU next year, regardless of the situation. AB and Ellis aren't 100% gone from next year's team. However, if they are, IU is without all five of their primary starters from this season (Lance Stemler was a senior as well). I'm happy to see that Crean's known to be a strong disciplinarian since IU's tried to become Pacers-lite off the court this season. I know... it really saddens me to see the trash that the Pacers are now. I know people on this board hate Reggie Miller, but I think his moral character kept that team much better then people give him credit for. That organization really hit bottom. I would like to see IU's credibility get back to what it once was as well.

How many #1s will make the Final Four?

All 4 will make it. Oh wait... -
He was rumored to be in the running when Sampson was hired, wasn't he? It will be interesting now because IU has almost nothing left of their team... DJ White, gone Gordon, gone The two idiots who got suspended today, gone. Who's left?

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 31, 2008 -> 01:19 PM) Thank you for making my point so perfectly. ok, so this comment is different then what Wright said, how? I suppose now we have to label CC as a racist. What a slippery slope.

QUOTE(lostfan @ Mar 31, 2008 -> 12:13 PM) Kerry isn't my favorite person in the world but the gist of what he's saying is real, even if it's slanted towards the point he's trying to make (i.e., vote Democrat) The arrogance is THE problem with this administration. That much I agree with. However, the soundbyte era is simply nuts when you look at the context of which a lot of this stuff is taken, Reverend Wright included.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 31, 2008 -> 11:16 AM) Dear James, Want a reminder of why we still need more people in Congress who know what war really is, and the obligations we owe those who bore the burden of battle? Just last week, Vice President Cheney was asked about the burden of the Iraq War on our military. His answer? George Bush bears the greatest burden of the war. 4,000 American troops who gave their lives? The Vice President summed it up: "They volunteered." When I read the Vice President's comments, I was reminded of what Marine Corps 3-star General Gregory Newbold, the former Operations Director at the Pentagon, said about the war in Iraq: "The commitment of our forces to this fight was done with a casualness and swagger that are the special province of those who have never had to execute these missions - or bury the results." This is why our work isn't done changing the face of Congress. Dick Cheney doesn't get it, but he'll be gone in January - the question is, who will be coming here to speak up for the troops? The rubber's hitting the road right now. I need you to help send more people to Washington who did serve, who did volunteer, and who took from that experience a personal commitment to provide for our nation's soldiers and a deep understanding of the magnitude of issues of war and peace. Here are some more of those people -- so please do what you can to help them today: http://www.actblue.com/page/strongermajority2 In the House, there's been no better or clearer voice on national security than Admiral Joe Sestak from Pennsylvania. The johnkerry.com community went to the mat to help send Admiral Sestak to Congress, and he has been as courageous in Congress as he was in the Navy. His record of standing up and being counted has landed him on the very top of the GOP target list, and he can use our help right now. A good fundraising quarter can signal great strength and put him on the offensive in 2008. In New York, former Navy Commander Eric Massa is running against Randy Kuhl. Last time, Eric came within a whisker of beating Kuhl, losing by only 2 points. With a little extra effort this time, we can push Eric over the top. Eric's a former top aide to the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. He understands military and foreign policy in his head and in his gut, and he's committed to a new course in Iraq and to making health care universal for all Americans. In California, former Air Force helicopter pilot Charlie Brown is running to fill another GOP open seat vacated by a Republican one step ahead of scandal. Now he's facing two career politicians who didn't even live in his district. Charlie's son is active-duty Air Force and has served four tours in Iraq; believe me, Charlie doesn't need any lectures about who bears the burden in the military today. And Charlie isn't waiting to get to DC to start helping; he's donating 5% of everything he raises in this campaign to help veterans' service organizations around the country. And we also have an incredible veteran running to break the Republican roadblock in the Senate. In Tennessee, my friend Bob Tuke is a Marine who served America in uniform, a Democratic soldier who has worked hard for others and, now, a candidate for the United States Senate. He headed up my efforts in Tennessee in 2004, and he's fought for Democrats as head of the TN Democratic Party. He served in Vietnam (yes, he volunteered), and now is answering the call to service once again. In January, I want to see Bob sworn in to the United States Senate. So please donate what you can to help these great veterans turn our Congress into a force for change: http://www.actblue.com/page/strongermajority2 It is profoundly wrong to think that fighting for your country overseas and fighting for your country's ideals at home are contradictory or even separate duties. They are, in fact, two sides of the very same patriotic coin. So this year, let's send more of these great Democratic patriots to Congress. Thanks, John Kerry I'm sure that John Kerry likes to take things out of context, just like everyone accuses some others around here of doing. But this isn't the thread for that.

Obama calling for raising the Cap Gains tax

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 02:59 PM) Sen. OBAMA: No, no, no, absolutely. And that's why I think that it may be, for example, that you could structure something in which people with certain incomes were exempted from this increase and it would stay at 15. Do you have a clue how this stuff works? Because if you did, you would realize how bad this is. But to you, it's about "rich people" paying their fair share. I'm glad to know I'm "rich". -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 09:35 PM) I don't think it's been noted yet, but Hillary's other excuse for the mis-speaking was that she was "Sleep deprived". QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 10:46 AM) Actually, it was very reasonable....I wouldn't come on here and post about it if it didn't work like a charm. It straps on very tight...you tighten the car seat straps just like you do to a car and it becomes one solid piece. It's the top strap that really solidifies the whole thing. I guess if it's awkward or not would depend on your suitcase, but it worked great on ours. The one thing I personally, wouldn't recommend is bringing the car seat on the plane though. That's what the airlines recommended, but when we did that it enabled our daughter to reach the seat in front of her with her feet. Which of course she would want to push on or kick. So we spent the whole flight either holding her...or watching her feet the whole time she was in her seat. Luckily, it was just a little girl in the seat in front of her...so the couple times she did do it and we stopped her, the little girl was very cool about it. On the way home she sat in the regular seat or with us. Oh I forgot to mention, 2 minutes before landing on the way home...a lady gave her a little stuffed animal to hold and my daughter held it and went to sleep. We were trying to get her to sleep the whole dam flight and she falls asleep during the landing. UGGGGGGGGGHHHHH. Then of course she wakes up when people all start getting their stuff....and starts crying again. We have another wedding in July and this one is in Jersey and our daughter is the flower girl. I really want to just drive there to avoid this whole thing. Anyone ever make the hike before?? It looks to be about 13 hours on google maps. I can sympathize. Our daughter was screaming bloody murder on a flight from El Paso to Dallas/Fort Worth. She cried and cried, and fell asleep about 5 minutes out. The phase my daughter's going through right now I wouldn't fly at all. She's going through her testing everything out by throwing a fit stage. For me, she doesn't do that so much. For mom, she's a horror.
