QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 03:53 PM) I tend to agree. This is backfiring, hardcore. But then, we'll see after tonight. She's going to have to hit not only a home run, but she's going to have to hit an 8 RBI grand slam, which I think it just about impossible, eh? She'll rally the base. but the fact that she cut lines praising Hillary from her stump speeches says a lot. She was gettign booed! Frankly, she'll get a few "Clinton women". And the McCain campaign will trot them out to show how great Palin is. But, I'll be blunt, and PLEASE dont take this the wrong way.... these are the moderate women who voted for Hillary because she was a woman. They might like her for some things and McCain for another. Now that there is a woman with McCain, they think that's ok. Not that they are "mindless" voters who see a woman and vote. It might have just been the tipping point. It wont be a lot who go to McCain, but some. Hillary and BIll went a LONG way last week towards forcefully pushing Hillary's women to Obama. And it seems to have worked based on a recent poll. Like I said, it wont be a TON that flock, but if it's only a drip... it wont be enough.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 02:28 PM) Ratings are in, not good.... GOP Convention Broadcast TV Ratings Lower than '04 According to preliminary national data from Nielsen Media Research, the three broadcast networks combined racked up a viewership of less than 11 million viewers, compared with the 14.8 million viewers who watched the networks’ coverage on the comparable night of the GOP gathering in 2004. That's also down from the 12.48 million who watched Senator Hillary Clinton’s call for unity among Democrats last week at that party's convention in Denver. More precise national ratings, as well as cable ratings, will be in later Wednesday. Not as bad as I first thought: I would argue yesterday was really "Day 1" of the convention, so compare that to the 22 million Michelle Obama got.. not too shabby.

It's Open Mic Day on MSNBC. WOW! (Some language here, so be careful) The voices are Mike Murphy (Republican political consultant) and Peggy Noonan with a little Chuck Todd. Church Todd: "Was she really the most qualified woman?" Noonan: "no... I think they went for the political bulls*** about narratives". She added: "It's Over" for McCain.

2008 General Election Discussion Thread
HuskyCaucasian replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
I got out of the habit of doing the weekly poll updates due to some medical concerns about my wife a month ago (she's fine by the way). But I thought I would point these out... CNN Poll: Obama widening lead in battleground states -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) I think the internet, like driving a car, decreases most people's IQ by about 20%. And some people don't have that 20% to give. In fairness, i think it really can help, you just need to have an internal filter. I feel that the internet has made me far smarter and more aware of the world at large. But, i also have a good filter in my brain that knows when to throw out the crap. My grandma on the other hand, forwards every piece of crap e-mail she gets.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 02:38 PM) Yeah the schedule has certainly been screwed up by the hurricane as well, but I'd feel bad blaming ratings on a hurricane. yea, but it is a factor. It really got them off to a bad start. The DNC had Obama v Clinton to hype it. It had the entire weekend to build up. Then they hit the ground running on Monday and REALLY took off Tuesday with the Hillary speech. The RNC got screwed by Gustav and Palin. Gustav was the weekend talk and when it got to convention time: "who is this woman?" Like I said in the Palin thread, I want to see how the week plays out, but I cant see Palin getting near the 28 million Hillary got. And McCain wont touch the 38 million Obama got. And in the end, that isnt good for them.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 02:30 PM) I have seen plenty of vile stuff like that throughout the blogosphere from BOTH sides of the aisle. Not sure about Kos because I don't hang there much, but overall, I see no great difference between the parties in terms of the venomous extremists. that's something we can both agree on.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 02:03 PM) Michael Savage is an idiot, so I don't count what he said. Although to be fair, in retrospect, it was the daily kos who started the rumors that Palin's disabled son was actually Bristol's, so I should have just ignored that too because the people there are idiots. Agreed on both points. I am just buttressing that it isnt the crazy left that is attacking Palin. As you said, both are idiots. Kos has some interesting stuff when citizen journalists tie things together to break a story, but too often it's random conspiracy garbage.

McCain's National Co-Chair: Media Coverage Of Palin Is "Completely Fair," Not Sexist
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 01:53 PM) This leaves me an obvious route to undermine your attack...simply find a prominent figure on the right that is attacking Governor Palin for those reasons. And This From Michael Savage: For the record, that is outright mean, wrong, and WAY out of line by any standard.
-
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 01:49 PM) I don't know enough about his record in the Illinois senate to comment on it, but "bi-partisan" and Obama will never be confused with his record in the U.S. senate. ok... willing to work across the aisle when necessary to get things done. Bi-partisan might have not been the right wording to use.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 01:33 PM) Not to totally derail the thread, but exactly what ARE RSO's accomplishments? the HOPE Act, which increased Pell Grants to $5100 The Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 (aka Google for Government) The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act The 2007 Government Ethics Bill Those would be the main ones. Barack has written a total of 890 Bills and co-sponsored another 1096 since he started serving in the U.S. Senate. That also doesnt include anything he did while in the Illinois state senate which he was praised as "bi-partisan", even by republicans.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 12:15 PM) That's not really your opinion - it's a hard-and-fast fact. That type of ticket would never, ever work unless there was a full-blown 3rd party. One of these day's I'm gonna figure out how to start my centrist "a little from both side" party.

This is the best they got. "She's a reformer" Per MSNBC: The campaign says the ad will air in "key states" (which usually means there probably isn't much money behind the ad).

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 11:59 AM) Unless Governor Palin is ridiculously bright, I have no idea how she could possibly be prepared to get all of that info down. I couldn't do it in a month. I consider myself a fairly well educated person with a slightly above average IQ. There is NO way I could ever think to be ready to be a VP in less than month. not even a chance. Especially since i have no actual foreign policy experience of any kind other than what I read online. I'd be ignorant to even think I could be ready to debate nuanced fine points of foreign relations on a national stage. (PS: not calling Palin ignorant here. Just saying I know myself and I know I personally wouldn't be able to) If I were Biden, I;d find a way to sneak in one simple question during the VP debate... "tell me the difference between the Sunni and Shiite" and pray it doesn't blow up in his face.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 11:51 AM) Obama didn't actually get as big of a bounce as I expected for such a well executed speech, but your point is well taken. As for your point, it is 110 percent accurate. That is why I think they should have announced Palin a few weeks to a month ago if this is their strategy, see if it works or not. If they really knew all this was going to come out, i'd have been better to announce her, see how it goes, and if it doesn't work, you always have the "she has changed her mind and wants to drop out to support everything going on with her family back in Alaska" excuse. That would have been an EXCELLENT move in my opinion. It would have come across as authentic and caring. It wouldn't have been the typical "oops he made a mistake with the VP and now needs to choose another" thing. The problem is that as was pointed out by BigSqwert in the Dem thread, McCain had a 3 months head start. He largely squandered it in every possible way. Whether it be fund raising, gaining political / media "favor", ripping Obama / Clinton down or vetting his VP. He did very little. he was "the other guy" while Clinton and Obama went toe to toe. McCain had 3 months to do a VERY thorough search of tons of people. He clearly wanted Lieberman but buckled at the last moment, so he had to scramble to find someone else. The moment the "7 houses" issue came up, Romney was out. If the innuendo is to believed, Pawlenty had a skeleton. Any pro-abortion" VP was out. Who now? Well, let's go for the little known and hope we can frame her image before the other side does.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 11:31 AM) Well I'm going to stay out of saying all of my thoughts, because it's pretty clear people here can't discuss Palin without crossing the lines of decency. But I will say that I thought the moment this selection was made that it be either boom or bust, with no in between. It SEEMS like bust right now I would argue it's really neither. It hasnt destroyed McCain yet. But it hasnt been a boom yet. Give it one week. We'll know then. let her talk. Let the Obama camp push back on her. See how it sits next Wednesday. If nothing has changed by next Wednesday, McCain may be sunk. Obama got too big of a bounce out of the convention. Remember, Michelle Obama got 22 million views, 26 million saw Hillary, 24 million for Biden, and 38 million saw Obama. It's hard to move large numbers if the RNC gets half that. (I haven't seen numbers from last night. My guess is that Lieberman isnt exactly a great ratings draw).
-
QUOTE (Soxy @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 10:50 AM) Honest question: why do you think McCain knows when to compromise? I feel like that kind of goes against the maverick stuff you hear about him. He wont compromise on the "Gang of 10" Energy bill because of tax increases on big oil. But Obama is willing to go against his personal belief that off-shore drilling wont help. Who is the one willing to comprimise?
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 11:13 AM) I'm curious to know how much of this stuff will blow over in a couple weeks and ultimately not matter. Like I said, some of this stuff is over the top and is just part of the download data dump on all of us. But the Trooper-gate stuff will stick around unless she and McCain prevail in getting it shutdown until after the election. Some of her "god's will" stuff will get some fodder, but that will only rally the GOP base. Her lack of experience will stick around for a long time as well.
