QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 08:39 PM) If we held the games who should tight the torch? (I know a LOT can happen between now and then) But if it were today, who would it be? Michael Jordan...?

I moved your post here J4L. Your comment is not needed in Willie's thread. We're here to praise Pea-pod, not to bury him.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 01:37 AM) I don't remember Freddie carrying the bat back, that's a cool picture. I don't believe that's Freddy.

21. Willie Harris (8 of 27 lists - 96 points - highest ranking #2 maggsmaggs) bio by knightni - GROUP FOUR! Everyone loves the utility guy. He's the one who can pinch run and steal a base. He'll slap a pitch the opposite way, to start a rally. Play second base, center field? No problem skip! Willie Harris one such man. Born in the same small town as the great Jackie Robinson, he was taught shortstop by his uncle, ex-Brewer shortstop Ernest Riles. He could play the infield, steal a base like a flash, and still run out there and play in the outfield. Willie never really was on Ozzie Guillen's good side when Oz took over the Sox in 2004. Guillen wanted someone who would be more disciplined at the plate, ( even though Guillen himself never was.) Willie rode the bench quite a bit in 2004 and 2005, but something happened. He started to get his swing working in late '05. He was hitting pitches the other way, stealing bases, and being more disciplined. Game 4 of the World Series. Who was up to the plate as a pinch hitter in the top of the eighth? Good ol' Willie. He was batting for Freddy Garcia, who had just thrown 7 innings of shutout baseball. Willie was facing fire-balling closer Brad Lidge. BASE-HIT! Willie took a wide turn and stepped back on the 1st base bag. He took a lead... The sac bunt was on! Pods bunted Willie to second. Jurassic sent him to 3rd on a ground out, and then, JD hit a base hit. Willie scored a run in the World Series. Not just any run, it turns out. But, the only and winning run in the clinching game. It was his turn now.

22. Bobby Thigpen (11 of 27 lists - 92 points - highest ranking #9 shipps) bio by Texsox - Who doesn't love a closer? There is no position like it in any other sport. Like a Red Auebach victory cigar, the appearance signals victory is at hand. In a rather unspectacular season for his stats, Bobby Thigpin managed to somehow set the MLB record with 57 saves in one season. Brought in 65 times to close 'em out, he failed 8 times to go along with an 1.83 ERA. Critics would continue to point to his failures long after that season, but to some loyal Sox fans, it was still something special. His performance that season started a controversy as he finished fourth in CY Young voting and fifth in MVP. During that time the closer role was being defined by Thigpen along with Lee Smith and Dennis Eckersley and suddenly those awards seemed within reach for a guy whose job was to pitch one inning. Another guy should be mentioned along with Thigpen. Barry Jones who quietly set up Thigpen that season. Much like Matt Suhey blocking for Walter Payton, Jones was the set up man and compiled an 11-4 record and 2.31 ERA. Reminding everyone that is takes a team to set some of these records. His 201 career saves still ranks number 1 for the White Sox. Back problems abruptly ended his career before he could climb higher on the all time career saves list. Sadly, it seems his back problems may have been caused by getting injured during a bench clearing brawl. For a few seasons, Bobby Thigpen was "the man" and for many Sox fans, his 1990 season remains the gold standard to judge all the other closers. He currently is with the organization as the manager for the Bristol Sox.

QUOTE (TCQ @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 01:03 AM) What if we hired carl yastremski to jus sit in the booth and not say a word, and put ventura next to him... Would hawks head explode, and if so would DJ be able to continue the broadcast covered in hawks brain juices...ideas? The plan's not complete without the frozen head of Ted Williams doing color commentary.

The cup and athletic supporter. It keeps the most important balls out of play.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 10:30 PM) One question, was Griffey on the Sox when the lists were submitted? No.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 10:17 PM) There is a chance that all 5 AL East teams could finish over .500. Baltimore would have to play pretty well, but it's not unpossible. I wonder if that has ver happened before?

QUOTE (JFields27 @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 10:06 PM) I have an essay to do(pretty short) and one of the options is what is the greatest challenge your(my) generation will face? Rickroling.

23. Bo Jackson (8 of 27 lists - 91 points - highest ranking #9 OilCan) bio by Texsox - Fans Know Bo! The first man to be an All-Star in two sports, Vincent Edward “Bo” Jackson was bigger than life. While his athletic accomplishments were legendary on the field, he was equally big off the field. “While with the Sox, Jackson promised his mom that once he returned from his hip replacement surgery that he would hit a home run for her. Before he could return, his mother died. In his first at bat after surgery he hit a home run to right field. The ball was caught by a 16 year old boy, Greg Ourednik, from Crown Point, IN. Ourednik returned the ball to Jackson during the game. Jackson had the ball engraved in his mother's tombstone.” Bo Knows Family "I also tell them that your education can take you way farther than a football, baseball, track, or basketball will - that's just the bottom line."--Bo Knows Education How could anyone not like and respect someone who worked so hard on the field(s). Just a few career baseball highlights * AL All-Star (1989) * 1989 All-Star Game MVP * 1993 AL Comeback Player of the Year Award * 20-Home Run Seasons: 4 (1987-1990) * 30-Home Run Seasons: 1 (1989) * 100 RBI Seasons: 1 (1989) One of the things that always impressed me about Bo was when he was drafted to play football by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers gave him an ultimatum to either give up baseball or give up the Buccaneers. He signed with the Royals. Bo Know Blackmail. Bo became an Oakland Raider the following season with Raider Owner Al Davis paying him full time for part time work. Playing behind Marcus Allen, Bo still racked up yardage and touchdowns. Perhaps his finest moment was shutting up a player I really disliked, Brian Bosworth. Bosworth had guaranteed to stop Bo on a Monday Night Game. Bo basically ran circles around and over Bosworth in scoring three touchdowns. He ran for 221 yards which remains the Monday Night Football record and his 90+ yard untouched touchdown is replayed on most MNF highlights reels. It is the one where he continues running through the endzone and down the tunnel with his teammates following. Bo knows in your face Bosworth. What about all this Bo knows? It is only the coolest marketing campaign ever. Bo knows became one of Nike’s most successful campaigns. My favorite featured Bo Diddley, but he did a lot of athletes and entertainers from all areas. Bo only played a couple seasons with the Sox and was rehabbing during that time as well. It was during his time on the Sox roster that he made an amazing comeback. His hip injury was so severe that most Doctors felt he would never play baseball again. He proved them wrong and hit a home run in his first at bat. The next day Nike ran an ad that simply said Bo Knew! Bo was more than just a Sox player. He was someone you would cheer for no matter what uniform he had on.

QUOTE (tommy @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 07:08 PM) Orioles put Sherrill on 15-day DL. Both pitchers from the suspended game (Linebrink and Sherrill) are not available, who will be on the mound when the game resumes? Probably let the managers decide since both teams are without their pitchers.

Billy Wagner is down indefinitely. More bullpen trouble for the Mets.
