QUOTE (Karko's Throat Skin @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 05:26 PM) I am riding shotgun on his bandwagon. I'll have no problem using said shotgun on OC, Juan or Fields on the way there. Juan has no problem using it on you, either. -
33. Wilson Alvarez (4 of 27 lists - 67 points - highest ranking #6 Markbilliards) bio by Markbilliards - On April 18, 2007, our jaws dropped as Mark Buehrle made history by throwing a no-hitter for the Chicago White Sox. To many fans, it had felt like an eternity since the last time a Sox player had accomplished such a feat. The last hurler to do so for the South Siders was a young southpaw from Venezuala named Wilson Alvarez. Mark Buehrle's no-hitter, although a fantastic gem of a game, was thrown by pitcher who had been known for years as very good player, at times even declared the team's ace. Alverez's feat was not something that could have been predicted by any fan. His debut in '89 for the Texas Rangers was not just a bad start, it was horrible. He managed to give up three earned runs on two walks and three hits before getting yanked by his manager from the game, while failing to record a single out. Alvarez had started his career in the Texas organization and was later traded to the White Sox along with strikeout master, Sammy Sosa, for Harold Baines. The few fans who remembered or were aware of him from his dreadful first start 2 seasons earlier, before coming to the White Sox were probably cringing as they saw Wilson take the mound again for the Sox on August 11, 1991. Wilson proved all the doubters wrong as seemingly out of no where he tossed the fifteenth no-hitter in White Sox history in only his second career major league start. His White Sox debut was a good one. Despite his no-no, Alvarez struggled with his control a lot over the next few years and throughout his career. He finally became a regular full time starter at the major league level in 1993 when he acquired 15 wins and over 200 innings while keeping his ERA under 3. Despite his stellar numbers in '93, Alvarez had a tendency to walk massive amounts of batters, getting close to 100 BB in several seasons and surpassing it in that '93 season with an ugly 122 walks. Even with his control problems, Alvarez was a pitcher with nasty stuff and fantastic potential. The kind that would make you uncontrollably nervous and excited at the same time. He was elected onto the '94 all-star team and racked up over 100 wins throughout his career (including 2 separate 15 win seasons with the Sox). He was loved by some, hated by others. Was he fat? Oh yes. Did he walk practically every other batter? Yes. But did he help the Sox? Absolutely. Alvarez was among Fernandez and McDowell in those early 90s pitchers that were fun to watch. I was young when Wilson was pitching for the Sox. Too young to understand why my Dad would yell at the TV every time he walked a guy. But I was old enough to understand that he was a good pitcher despite criticism of his weight, bad control and injury. He was and always will be the guy who threw a no-hitter in his first game on the White Sox. 34. Mike Sirotka (6 of 27 lists - 67 points - highest ranking #3 Heads22) Bio by Heads22 - Mike was one of the first guys I really started following once I gained more than a rooting interest in the White Sox...but it wasn't due to his results on the field. Sirotka comes in at the top of my list because, a few years ago, there was a website called bigleaguers.com. It was the MLBPA's website, and you had a chance to email a player. I tried a couple of White Sox, and, lo and behold, Sirotka replied to the email. I thought it was pretty cool that he was willing to shoot the s*** with some kid in podunk Iowa, and he instantly became a favorite. We kicked some emails back and forth, and he simply struck me as a guy happy to be playing baseball. Soon after this, he started putting up results on the field, including what may have been one of his most memorable games, a pitcher's dual with Pedro Martinez at Fenway Park. Damned if I can remember the result, but I do remember that he seemed to validate himself as the ace of the team. He was truly the lefty starting pitcher to love on this team just before Mark Buehrle (apologizes to Jim Parque). Actually, he's no worse than any other #1 WR in the NFL. He wants the ball, he celebrates, he wants to win. Owens, Moss, etc. are similar. -
I was just showing while I overreacted on the trade of Swisher, I wasn't incorrect. He is very overrated. I was right on the lead-off thing too.

My response to Swisher trade: QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 03:37 PM) No f***ing way. Trade your top 3 prospects for an overrated Moneyball OF? Fire KW before this becomes official. QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 05:04 PM) Who's your leadoff hitter then? Richar? Cabrera's not a leadoff guy, Swisher's not either. I chose Ramirez because of his speed. I did have Quentin batting 9th, though. Who would have foreseen 30+ HRs for Quentin?

35. Bill Melton (6 of 27 lists - 67 points - highest ranking #7 YASNY) bio by YASNY - Beltin' Bill Melton came up the White Sox in 1968 as a big strapping power hitting third baseman. By the next season he had firmly established himself at the position and held it down for the Sox until his final season with the team in 1975. Until Dick Allen's arrival, Melton was the Sox only legitimate power source. He was the AL home run leader in 1971 with 33 dingers. That was a duplication of the previous year, as he hit 33 in 1970 which was good enough to rank sixth in the AL in that category. However, by winning the home run crown in '71, he became the first Sox player in my lifetime to accomplish that distinction. The one time All Star ('71) left the Sox as the franchise career home run leader. Please feel free to comment with any more info and favorite stories about this player or any other in this list.

36. Nick Swisher (6 of 27 lists - 65 points - highest ranking #6 rangercal) bio by ChWRoCk2 - he acquisition of Nick Swisher was rather similar to the departure of Carlos Lee. Crazy? For starters, everyone here was in a scuffle when both trades happened, there were many who hated it and many who liked it. I for one loved it. The minute I heard we acquired Swisher I was awe struck, he has always been a player who if he struggles theres that little thing that you still like about him. He is a true character, from his dugout celebrations and personality to his hustle on the field. Maybe you haven't yet had the chance to visit his website, www.nickswisher.net, hes truly more than a ballplayer, involved with many charities and replies to his fans via email. As a member of the Chicago White Sox, Nick has hit .231 with 16 HRs and 54 RBIs and not to mention his impressive .351 OBP. Sure, nothing that will wow you but he has helped this team in many ways and who's to say we wouldn't be where were at without him. His recent walk off HR still gives me chills when I see it. Please feel free to comment with any more info and favorite stories about this player or any other in this list.
