  1. Meh, I'm like 99% sure PK will be back. Could be wrong. But doubt it.
  2. QUOTE (Wanne @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 07:33 PM) true...I thought about that as I typed. But I think Dunn is just a different bird than Lee. Just sayin...I'm probably way off on this. You are. The AL/NL thing doesn't apply to hitters. s***, the NL might have better pitching than the AL anyway.
  3. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 07:34 PM) Is 2011 the last year of Edwin Jackson's contract or is he signed through 2012? 2011 is the last year. FA in '12.
  4. QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 06:41 PM) Amaro says he's considering a RF platoon of Gload/Francisco to start 2011. Does anybody actually believe him? The Phils have been connected to Quentin a couple times this offseason, and I can't help but wonder what we'd be looking for in return if a deal is made. That's bulls***. RF is Dominic Brown's to lose at this point.
  5. QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 06:28 PM) If we couldn't afford Putz I don't see how we'd be able to bring in Balfour either. Think it may be bargain bin bullpen shopping for KW. And I don't have a problem with that. Overpaying for relievers usually means fail.
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 05:14 PM) If the Sox weren't in contention, they would have shut down Santos in August for the season. He'll be fine, he'll learn how to pace himself through a 162 game season better. I'm not worried about the bullpen at all right now, as people are overpaying for bullpen pieces right now. We went from Mark Kotsay to Adam Dunn. I just can't get upset about the bullpen right now.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 05:10 PM) Usually, each season it winds up being 4-5 teams in each league have really good bullpens. Usually 4 of those teams make the playoffs. And like I said, if the season started tomorrow I'd be worried. But there's time. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 05:14 PM) Maybe but talk to the Atlanta Braves of the 90's about being able to piecemeal a bullpen together. It's not that easy and it can ruin a good starting staff. I agree I'm not worried yet but many teams are looking for bullpen help and the price will go up. With signing Dunn and possibly PK, there won't be much left to get quality. KW is just going to have to get creative or somebody from the system is going to have to step up. This goes back to our crappy drafting/player development. Look at the Giants from this last year. Brian Wilson and Sergio Romo, their 2 best relievers, were 24th and 28th round picks. I wouldn't be horrified at giving a guy like Gregory Infante or Jon Link a shot (granted they performed well during ST).
  8. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 05:04 PM) A bad bullpen will ruin a good team. Especially with a manger like Ozzie who likes to use numerous bullpen pitchers. A bad anything can ruin a good team. How many teams out there have A+ bullpens? Not many. If the season started tomorrow I'd be worried. Not right now.
  9. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 04:57 PM) Bullpens can't win divisions, but they can lose them. Right now, we have one guy who I am completely sold on: Thornton. After the All-Star break, Santos posted: 4.18 ERA with a 1.77 WHIP. Once teams figured him out, he didn't pitch well. Sale is young, so who knows how he will be with teams getting a second look at him. Our guys in the system are minor league relievers for a reason because their stuff is not good enough to stay as starters. The pen is a huge issue right now. Putz was just as bad if not worse after the all-star break. Sale is young. And? He's got the stuff. You gonna hide him? And everybody knows how much I loathe our system. But there's some guys that deserve a look. I just can't worry about the bullpen right now.
  10. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 04:53 PM) I think the concern is that we resort to the 2007 plan of getting a bunch of hard-throwing guys and crossing our fingers that it works out. I'm not too worried. The bullpen is a crapshoot in the best of years, and i wouldn't mind letting a couple of the kids in our organization get some play. Ideally, you'd like to have 5-6 legitimate bullpen guys you can count on going into every season. Just doesn't happen. Relievers are just too inconsistent from year-to-year. Now I'll wait and see what Putz from Arizona until I make a final conclusion. But if they gave him 3 guaranteed years, I'm glad we passed. We filled a a massive hole with Dunn and it appears PK will be brought back. I'm not going crazy because Putz is gone.
  11. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 04:49 PM) Hopefully it's a $5 foot long. God damn you. I just got done smoking. But I was hungry anyway.
  12. Why is everybody freaking out over the bullpen right now? lol. Putz obviously was looking to get paid and I'm glad the Sox passed. It's December 6th. We've got 3 legitimate relievers right now. I'm sure will pick somebody up. As sad as our system is, we do have some arms that at least deserve a shot. Bullpens can be piecemealed together rather easily, and more importantly, cheaply.
  13. QUOTE (Special K @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 09:15 AM) He's not a bad baseball player, just injury plagued since 2006 And that injury has turned him into a bad baseball player.
  14. QUOTE (joeynach @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 04:24 PM) KW has since confirmed that the Putz ship has sailed. http://twitter.com/Joeynach Meanwhile there are some relievers and closers available that my be on KW list; Rafael Soriano, Manny Corpas, Kerry Wood, Manny Delcarmen, Grant Balfour, Jess Crain, Matt Guerrier, Aaron Heilman, John Rauch, Takashi Saito, Hideki Okajima, Dan Wheeler, Scott Downs Cross Soriano off that list, please. If we're not paying Putz we sure as s*** not gonna pay Soriano.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 04:28 PM) Interesting. The pen has been a diaster for Milwaukee, but with them already trading Lawrie, I can't believe they are still thinking about trading Fielder, especially without getting a big time starting pitching prospect in return. That would be a terrible deal for the Brewers and a fireable offense for Melvin.
  16. QUOTE (Wanne @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 04:22 PM) per ESPN: The Los Angeles Dodgers are actively involved in discussions on a possible three-player deal with the Milwaukee Brewers that would bring slugging first baseman Prince Fielder to Los Angeles in exchange for Dodgers first baseman James Loney and embattled closer Jonathan Broxton, according to multiple sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity. WTF?
  17. QUOTE (Cali @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 04:18 PM) The only positive to signing Jenks cheap is when, NOT IF, he sucks it up, whether in ST or in April May...they can just cut him. The leash should be EXTREMELY short, like one chain length.... Think you've made your point.
  18. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 03:33 PM) I just disagree with the notion that Jenks can't pitch. I agree he's been injury riddled and his lack of working out and being in decent shape has impacted him from being the pitcher he was a few years ago. However, last season Bobby was an incredibly unlucky pitcher as evidenced by the high BAPIP (.368). The few seasons prior to that he's still put up well above average ERA+'s (two years ago and elite level ERA+). In fact, 2010 was a season in which he posted one of his lowest FIP and Xfip of 2.59 and 2.62 of his career. Additionally, he's still striking out > a batter per inning. What the hell? I read this post and assumed it was chw42. Gage goin' saber?
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 11:26 PM) check out crede's stats since 2006. Fixed. Joe Crede is a bad baseball player.
  20. QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 08:17 PM) What is Magic by The Pilot I still have no clue what you're talking about. But you're cool with me.
  21. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 08:14 PM) Blue Jays are trading Marcum to the Brewers. I think that deal should be a good comparison for what we can expect to receive for Floyd. What are the Jays getting back?
  22. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 07:45 PM) Another thing to consider about this signing is that it may behoove the Sox to trade for another pitcher ASAP. Fairly certain that Boras will get Jackson a big contract somewhere else after next year. Well....Naw, I ain't gonna touch this one.
  23. QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 07:53 PM) Do you happen to have any Legos or Lincoln Logs i can borrow? How is it I don't have a clue WTF you're talking about 99.9% of the time and I still like you?
  24. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 07:22 PM) This seemed like the logical compromise to the 6 or 8 year debate. It just sucks that he's in the AL now. He's going to f***ing kill it at Fenway and all the other predominantly hitters' park in that division. I'd actually rather he went to the Cubs. They could sign Pujols, Longoria, and Tulo and they would somehow f*** it up. But if they signed Cargo? They'd probably win it all.
  25. Just read 7/$161 over at SOSH. But that's according to a "source."
