  1. As much as I cant stand Gottlieb I agree. If after the first look its not readily apparent that it was intentional, just let it go. If you have to replay it 7 times to try and determine, it probably wasnt that excessive in the first place.
  2. Its not our job, its our choice. That is why it is great to be an American, we have the choice to help other people. There is an irony in your post. In 1939 people were saying that we should leave Europe alone because "they'll get sick of killing each other eventually if left to their own devices. Not our job to do it for them and American lives are not to be wasted to help them." Today those men and women who sacrificed their lives for Europeans are considered some of the greatest heroes in American history. People like my great uncle, who died at Normandy, who fought because sometimes helping other people is the right thing to do. Isolationism will never fly with me, I will not let my family down like that. They have given to much, I will honor their sacrifice in trying to make the world a better place.
  3. I think i have butler over marquette, so glad they pulled it out.
  4. Its rough, I really thought hed end as a Bear. Only Bears jersey Ive worn in the last 13 years. Good luck, hopefully you get a good contract and come ready to play. Still kind of in disbelief.
  5. Where im going with this is, honor rolls have nothing to do with the wussification of America. Subjective grading does. The second you give grades for busy work, participation, extra credit, hard work, you are creating a system where the smartest are not always being recognized. So if we really want to change things, get rid of grades entirely. Give subjective tests, and let the results speak for themselves. If you want to give awards based on standard tests that every kid in the school took, I would have no problem with that. But when student X, had teacher Y, who gave everyone As. Where as student Z, had teacher X, that gave most people Bs, its stupid to give student X an award, because its impossible to tell if they are more deserving than student Z. And I remembered that stupid honor thing I was thinking about it was called "National Honor Society" http://www.nhs.us/
  6. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 21, 2013 -> 12:28 PM) How can a math or science teacher do this when you're given a problem with only one correct answer? Except for english teachers who may or may not like your writing style (and again, that's not the entirety of the grade), who else can be manipulated? Easily In math/science. Didnt show work, participation, attendance, a million other ways. Partner test AP physics, I got a different grade than my hot lab partner, because the teacher had a crush on her. We had the same answer, the teacher just claimed "You didnt show all your work" Wtf is that.
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 21, 2013 -> 12:25 PM) Ok, how else would you do it? Interview teachers/counselors about a kids "real" intelligence? That'd be worse. Standardized test, like France or Japan. You get X, you can go to Y college. As long as we are on an objective standard, its just a joke. And anyone getting awards based on grades, is just furthering that joke. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 21, 2013 -> 12:26 PM) But learning isn't rote memorization of facts or algorithms to solve math problems. Any problem beyond very basic mathematics or "fill in the blank" is going to be subjective and evaluate the student's abilities in multiple ways. Common Core, for all of its faults, gets away from not-exactly-useful testing and evaluation along those simplistic lines. A writing assignment is still going to be subjective, too. Interpretation and application of the grading rubric as well as any quality assessment is going to vary for every individual grader. Exactly. Thats why giving awards on subjective nonsense in junior high/hs is nonsense. Let these kids have a change to get better. Otherwise you have the situation of my life. Certain kids could just never catch us, they just never had the chance. By the time we are in HS, they are on a much lower path with no way to catch up. How is it fair that Im in AP classes to start, where they have no chance to be, because back when they were 6 someone decided that they werent as smart?
  8. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 21, 2013 -> 12:24 PM) I don't even know how to respond to this. You're going to an extreme that's unnecessary. I was a super hardcore student. Could have probably been valedictorian if I wanted to play the game. But I admit that grades were just a game. Teachers can easily be manipulated.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 21, 2013 -> 12:20 PM) Most grades are not subjective. Writing, sure (even then i'm sure you'll have teachers debate this with you since most assignments have objective requirements that have to be met. Style is about the only subjective part of it). But math, science, grammar/vocab tests, etc are all objectively measured. You get the problem/question right or you don't. Grading is also the best way for third parties to measure your intelligence. How else would colleges know if you're average or above average? Completely untrue. Best way is a standardized/objective test. Why do you think the bar is a standardized test, as opposed to just allowing people in law school to become lawyers if they had good grades? Its because grades are not a good indicator of actually understanding the material.
  10. And while we are on the subject, lets really get hardcore. Lets get rid of giving kids more time if they claim to have adhd or any other problem. No extensions, no retakes, nothing. You want grades to really matter, you want to give out hilarious awards, make these kids actually earn them in an objective fashion. Not because teacher X liked student Y and therefore gave him a good grade because he was a nice/hardworking kid. That just makes us all look stupid, because now I am being lumped in with him.
  11. Why not just actually have school based on objective testing? Grades are subjective p**** bulls*** to begin with. Honor roll is nothing more than subjective nonsense. Anyone who has ever been highly ranked in a class understands that its politics and bulls***. I want to be Valedictorian, oh noes I have an accelerated class that is a out of 4.5 instead of 5.0, Ill take that class pass/fail so that it wont drop my gpa. Thats just stupid manipulation and anyone that thinks that makes America less of a p**** to allow it is silly. Tests or nothing. But then again, Im sure a bunch of p*****s are afraid of their entire lives coming down to 1 test. lol We can all throw nonsense out, its just stupid. School grades are pointless, once you are at the top, its easy to see.
  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 21, 2013 -> 12:00 PM) Someone didn't make the honor roll! I was on the honor roll ever year. When I was in 1st grade, I was split with the other "smart" kids, and from then on we had different special classes 1 time a day, we had a different more advanced math class. I didnt need a ribbon to know that. I just never cared because most of the kids in (I forget the stupid name of it, but its in HS where you do community service, etc to get an award) it were dumb as rocks. I only cared about my AP test scores and my ACT/SAT. Grades were ridiculous, we all have over 4.0s because our classes are out of 5.0. Not really a challenge or anything to be proud of.
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 21, 2013 -> 11:49 AM) Not sure you should be letting the US off the hook there, the State and Defense departments were really s***ty when it came to doing anything about the plight of the Jews. Treasury had to work as hard as they possibly could to get them to do anything, and even then, they couldn't be bothered to bomb the rail tracks leading into Auschwitz as they flew over the camp towards another target. Are you responding to me? Because the entire point of my post was "AFTER WWII" meaning that because of the way that the world, including the US, handled WWII, I will never just idly sit by and hope for the best. Im pretty familiar with how the US treated the Jews, I know about the boats they sent back. I know about the St. Louis, the immigration quotas. Bombing the rails isnt even the tip of the iceberg. But yeah, that was the entire point of my post, never again will I let people sit idly by.
  14. I actually dont care. People who are smart and good at school, usually know that, and dont need plastic ribbons and award ceremonies. I guess in my opinion if you truly are the best, you are going to rise to the top anyways, because most people who are that good, dont really care what other people think. Not to mention grades are subjective and I hate awards based on subjectivity. Now if its a true competition (standardized test, sport, etc) then of course they deserve to be ranked/rewarded/etc. But as long as grades are based on nonsense like "class participation" and "attendance" they really mean nothing. And I honestly believe that they should be scrapped.
  15. I dont trust France and England to deal with things. After WWII my people will never turn a blind eye again. Its not our job, its no ones job. Its up to each individual to determine where they stand. Now that doesnt mean the US has to send ground troops, but it does mean that if we can simply spend money to help other people from being massacred, that I will gladly agree to send my tax dollars to that cause.
  16. I think that 0-6 thing is getting way overblown. First of all lets think about the insane part of that, they won 26 games by double digits. How ridiculous is that? Now moving on to the negative perception of the 0-6. Florida only lost 7 games, that means you can spin it as "Florida was only beaten by double digits once", thus they had a chance to win almost every game they played but 1. The losses were almost all on the road, @ AZ by 1 where they gave up 6 points in the final minute to lose (AZ shot 21 fts to FLA 8), "neutral" floor to K-State (game was played in Kansas City, @ Mizzou, @ Tenn, @ UK and neutral against Ole Miss, meaning Florida only lost 1 game when on a neutral or home court.
  17. Yeah Im not a big fan of this move. His best days may be behind him, but it sounds like he wasnt asking for insane money and there is something to be said about continuity. Guess this is the reality of a new coach/gm.
  18. In my annual picking Wisconsin to win bracket, I have Wisconsin over Indiana in the final. Just thought that was to amazing to pass up
  19. Yeah I posted my full bracket in your article. I actually didnt even see what you did until after I posted mine, so I was pretty surprised that we both had Ville v. Florida, just in reverse.
  20. I oddly dont have any of those teams even getting into the elite 8.
  21. Heres what I got: Ville, OSU, Florida, Indiana Vill v Florida Florida champs
  22. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 20, 2013 -> 05:06 PM) So even under the stalking law what these girls did was fine. That would appear to be true. Obviously I assume that prosecutors would try and argue that if a group is acting in concert that each threat should not be taken individually (thus 2 threats by 2 girls would be actionable), but I am not going to research that as it really would require me to start using lexis. The law seems to show the tension between first amendment and threats. It seems like they are recognizing that we have the right to say things, even violent things, but that right can be lost if you are trying to target/harass someone. But yeah, in the absence of some other evidence, 1 threat seemingly is okay.
  23. And you quoted my typo when I was in between "This is the" and "this has" so there is some irony in the fact my quote makes me sound stupid.
  24. This has literally become the dumbest argument ever. (edit) Get off my high horse? You kept citing IL law, so in 5 seconds I found the actual law. I just got bored of arguing over something that isnt real.
  25. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 20, 2013 -> 04:50 PM) I'm sure we can create a factual scenario that would stretch the bounds of the Illinois law that I saw. But if they're just posting that on facebook or twitter (and apologized for it) then no I don't think that would be reasonable to fear that. Like I said, if they showed up at her door in addition to sending it out? Cornered her at school? Sure, that I could see being a reasonable apprehension of fear of imminent peril. You arent even looking at the stalking laws, which basically cover these scenarios. I have no idea why you are living in this fictitious land where assault is the only basis for this crime.
