  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 18, 2012 -> 05:36 PM) At the end of a school year? Then you're almost guaranteeing yourself a 4-month strike every time the contract comes up for renewal. Same reason the NFL didn't get their CBA done until they were really at the threat of losing games. Striking over the summer does nothing. 6 months was from the start of the school year so that would be March, where a strike would be just as effective. More likely I would have agreed to hold off until winter break and say that teachers wont be returning unless the contract is agreed to before then. Its funny you comment on the NFL. They struck over the summer and a deal was reached before the first game. Usually when you have reasonable sides the deal is done before any time is lost. Also it seems they are doing exactly what I suggested, keep working while the final agreement is hammered out. http://news.yahoo.com/chicago-teachers-vot...-222152623.html So in essence they could have worked the last week or so, they just chose not to.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 18, 2012 -> 04:59 PM) Length of day is item #1 on the list. Right, the teachers are arguing kids should be in school LESS time. How does that "help students." Unless there is some study that shows students who go to school more than 7 hours do worse than those who go to school less than 7 hours. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 18, 2012 -> 04:59 PM) I don't understand your "shut up" idea here. I don't think working under the previous contract for the rest of the year was a realistic option (I may be wrong on that one) and the CPS proposal was 4 years. That's four years under a contract 90% of your membership doesn't want and it puts you right back into Presidential Election Season. You agree to an interim deal (something like 6 months) and if you cant work it out, you strike then. That way you have support in what you are doing. That way you can go "We worked on good faith and Rahm screwed us." Because that is the real question, why cant they work in good faith?
  3. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 18, 2012 -> 04:26 PM) Buried under the whole "there's no money!" claim is a whole lot of larger taxation and wealth/income equality issues. Its not buried anywhere, its front and foremost of anyone who is telling CTU to shut up for the time being. If you want to fix this larger issue, the first thing you need to do is make sure that the President/Congress is on your side. How do you do that? You win national elections. So part of my anger against CTU is that they are seriously rocking the boat in a year that could drastically impact the funding of all social services. They need to open their eyes and leave well enough alone. Because they may think Rahm is bad, but thats just because they are clearly unaware of a man named Scott Walker. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 18, 2012 -> 04:39 PM) I mean, how sad is it that people used the "well if they're not in school they'll be on the streets committing crime" argument as a justification to open school doors? That is f***ing pathetic. Well its true. When I wasnt in school, I was out breaking the law. That being said when I was in school I was breaking the law. Just confined so unable to hurt society. Ill never forget the last day of 7th grade, got kicked out of school early and then arrested a few hours later. The police just kind of laughed at our crime spree and said "You guys have been busy, we have numerous reports that lead to your arrest."
  4. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationw...892291.htmlpage When I read that, I really dont see how this was about the children. They dont even discuss supplies or class sizes until page 3.

  9. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Sep 17, 2012 -> 04:35 PM) I don't understand why this is such a problem for so many people. What do they do with their kids the other 180 days/year they aren't in school? Summer camp, summer jobs, a million other things that people plan for. Some parents get part time jobs during the school year.
  10. Not sure what Wise was thinking, and it wasnt helped by Gordon not running as hard as he could.

  12. Deportation is more appropriate. Go back to England you bastard!
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 17, 2012 -> 11:13 AM) consider potential sampling bias i.e. upper-middle class white collar professionals A lot of people were already unhappy with Rahm/CPS over the school closings. I do a lot of legal aid. None of them are supporting the teachers, they just want their kids back in school so they dont get fired for taking days off. A lot of people are concerned that they are going to lose their jobs because they have to stay home to take care of their kids. I went to the protests to try and see how many "regular" people were there, not many.
  14. Id have to see the poll because I live/work in Chicago and that seems suspicious compared to what Im hearing/seeing.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 17, 2012 -> 10:42 AM) Yeah, I don't know that the prospect of arresting 30k teachers is a realistic one or the image that Emmanuel would want, but I think their union would be dissolved. When the carrot fails, you turn to the stick. Rahm knows how to read polls. Lake Forest is back to school with no teachers (the shocker being Lake Forest had school on Rosh Hashanah). In my opinion the teachers have overplayed their hand.
  16. I annoyingly lost by .5 points due to Vernon Davis catching the final td in last nights game. I wanted the 49ers to lose just for being stupid because he should have fallen on the ground inside the 5 to ensure the win. Greedy players should be punished.
  17. It sounds like it is on. My football game is telling me Rahm plans to file injunction.
  18. Prior to yesterday Chryst wasnt exactly setting the world on fire either haha. It was a good relationship, Wisconsin lost a lot of offensive coaches and its just not clicking. 1 more game to figure it out before the real season starts.
  19. Bielema is a defensive coach, and the Wisconsin defense has actually been better than I would have expected. The big problem here is that Bielema made a questionable hire for OC (Canda runs a spread so there were a lot of questions about how that would fit) and now it seems the offense is in complete disarry. They just have no rhythm and cant stretch the field at all. Im not sure if Stave is starting next week, but it doesnt help that the wrs are terrible now that Abberderis is injured.
  20. Wisconsin's play calling is terrible right now. I would have fire Canada after the first game, but hopefully he can understand that when you have the largest line you run straight ahead, instead of calling a ton of counters and slow developing run plays that quick teams blow up.
  21. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 14, 2012 -> 09:11 AM) My experience with non-union job sites in the south tells me it's not a union thing. Ironic that you posted in another thread an article that implied that unions were the reason that Northern Schools were better than Southern Schools. I guess its not that simple.
  22. Did you really just quote an article that used the south having worse scores than areas with teachers unions, as evidence of teacher unions being good? Why dont we compare apples to apples. Lets compare a private school in Chicago (no union) to a public school in Chicago. Think about it, and then realize why that entire article completely missed the point. Its not about whether unions are good, bad or indifferent, its about what can we do to ensure that children receive the best education. And Im sorry, but unlike the teachers union, I think that all options should be on the table and there should be no sacred cows. If that is so wrong, I dont understand the world anymore. Simply put, show me some evidence that the teachers union has helped children, because we all know that the union helps teachers. The point isnt about helping teachers, its about helping children.
  23. Well if you are going to walk, Id suggest using Madison as much as possible. Streets under el tracks are always good locations for bad things.
