  1. Woops, yeah I screwed that phrase up the first time. Must not of been paying that much attention to what I was doing.
  2. My problem with the idea that the Lebanese were going to do something to Hezbollah, but just didnt get around to it is: Why are they doing nothing now? I havent heard one story that went something like: Lebanese police officers, capture Hezbollah leaders. or Lebanese army captures Hezbollah militants. or Lebanese govt declares war on Hezbollah. Those are the reactions you expect when a govt really condemns something. What I see is tacit condonation.
  3. Yeah I was hoping last night I was just tired and misinterpreted this thread. Defense lawyers are just doing a job, many get paid well, but many do not. One of the most basic ideas of American society is "innocent until proven guilty" and that you get an attorney if you are being charged with a crime that has a potential for jail time. If you do not agree with the system, the great part of America is that your free to leave at any time. Some European countries believe in guilty until proven innocent, perhaps that is more your style.
  4. I dont get why people think that what Israel does actually matters to the people who want to destroy Israel. All that happens when the Israeli's are the good guys, is they get dicked in the end. They give back Gaza, etc, it only makes the militants more aggressive. As they are giving back the land, the Palestinian's go in and burn down the temples. The Israeli's are the good guys and let it happen. Then people start shooting missles into their country, and the Israeli's barely flinch. Its only when they start kidnapping soldiers, that the Israeli's get to their breaking point. Can you imagine what would happen if a bunch of rogue Quebec seperatists were shooting rockets across the US boarder? The US would put an end to them, and anyone who was harboring them, or letting them shoot rockets from their backyard would be caught in the cross fire. And if you dont like what people are doing in your country, and you think your getting a bad rap, you come out and do something. You dont just condemn the other side who is protecting its own border, while you sit there and do nothing. As for the ethnic cleansing, that is just naive. If the Israeli's wanted to ethnicly cleanse, the body count would be up in thousands already, and you would be seeing ground troops to come in and kill civilians. That is ethnic cleansing, not shooting missles at terrorists who are being hidden by civilians. In fact in the US we call that a conspiracy or an accessory. The only thing Israel can do is fight fire with fire. And each time those in the Middle East try to harass or destroy them, they must respond with such agression that any time in the future they consider doing the same thing, they will know the penalty.
  5. Looks pretty sweet. Would be another avenue to get my DBPL fix.
  6. I think Ozzie's impact will mainly be on latin players. Ivan acted like his best friend.
  7. Provided the US is willing to pay for a top coach, I think Klinsmann will be the US coach. It just makes to much sense for the US side, its clear Arena has gotten them as far as he can take them. They played Italy to a draw, so the talent was there. But when you watched the games it just seemed like the US lacked direction, and many times Arena made questionable coaching decisions. Klinsmann will bring credibility to the US, and hopefully it will pay off in keeping dual citizens in the US, aka a guy like Adu.
  8. It may be one of the strangest events in the history of sports. I am hard pressed to remember a final in any sport where some one did something so bizarre. Zidane let his emotions get the best of him, but I think that outside of Italy most wont hold it against his career. The odd thing is Zidane was Juventus although Marco Materazzi is Inter Milan. Supposedly he called Zidane a dirty terrorist, Materazzi denies it on the website.
  9. I have to seriously question why a player would receive a 4 star, but not get any offers from the quality programs in the Big 10. Rivals has him as a 3 star, but in the end stars mean nothing. If you look back at Wisconsin, Beckum was godly stars wise but has yet to even see the field.
  10. There just is no way to know for sure. Plenty of pitchers experience dead arm. Perhaps it was the extra innings they pitched in the playoffs are catching up to them. Anyways, I just mainly disagree with the fact the Sox have to worry about not making the playoffs. Prior to the last 2 games they had i think an 8 game lead in the WC, now its down to 6. They have a deep pitching rotation with veterans and a solid offensive line up. One of the Red Sox, Yankees, and Tigers will fade.
  11. Over his career Garcia has posted plenty of off years. It's not necessarily his velocity, just hes an inconsistent pitcher.
  12. Since when does velocity equal success? But to the original question, I think the White Sox will play in october and will have one of the top 2 rotations in the playoffs.
  13. So Javy hasnt gone from the NL to AL to NL to AL? Atleast Contreras had played in NY and stayed in the same league.
  14. Contreras was done when the Sox traded for him too. How long did it take for that crappy pitcher to get settled?
  15. Why do so many people disrespect Weber's recruiting ability. Illinois is not a destination school, the fact he is able to get any top level recruits should be good enough. OSU, may not have the greatest basketball program but its atheltic program has so much prestige that it is really easy to sell the school. Not to mention its easier to sell Columbus than Champaign. Hes got a pretty good class, especially considering the school he recruits for. Illinois does not sell itself, its not like UNC, Duke in basketball and not like OSU, Michigan, USC, FSU etc in Football. It has a solid basketball program and deficient football program. Bo Ryan does not get the best recruits, he almost always loses on them. But in the end he wins basketball games so who cares if does not have 5 star players. Weber, I feel, will have the same impact. He may not get the best recruits, but he will win games. And in the end Id rather win games than have great recruits. If it was the reverse Zook would still be in Florida.
  16. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but Wisconsin's scout boards say that Evan Turner is going to OSU.
  17. Abe, I agree that using judicial activism in the strictest sense of the term, that Scalia would not fit that. But I do think that Scalia is active in terms of using the constitution to fit his own views. IE from Michael H He goes to great lengths to prove that an alduterous father, although the real father has no parental rights toward a child because traditionally the marital father has had the presumptive right. But then in the end he goes: Both O'Connor and Kennedy dissented on his historical analysis. I mean its just a bad argument, slavery was historically acceptable. It is clear that this opinion had many of Scalia's own ideas cloaked in historical context. And IMO Scalia is more anti-criminal than he is pro-state rights. He gives away power to the govt on a regular basis.
  18. It completely discredits Bush and GITMO because he did something illegal. But outisde of that... And here was my answer in the other locked thread, I dont feel like starting a new one and I already typed it out. I wont carry it on, but I just felt like there should be an answer. Minors, Well you are attributing arguments to me that I did not make, but I will gladly answer. Appeals are rarely won. In fact, in all forms of law they are won less than the first trial. Now I dont know if the stat is 95% or 51%, it really does not matter, every trial lawyer will tell you that the most important thing is to win in the first trial. It is even more important in criminal cases. Why? Because they are all trial by jury. This is very important because in many other areas trial by jury is waived in favor of a bench trial. When there is a bench trial, there is a much higher liklihood of reversal. Why? Because the standards are different. And you can not put a time on it, 10 years, 20 years, 50 years, because it is not time which should be the underlying factor, it should be guilt. And regardless of whether they were guilty for 50 years and then proved innocent, or 1 day and then proved innocent, the end result is, that they are innocent. And when they are innocent, they are deserving of NO punishment. Our system is fallible, and as such we are not capable of handling a punishment that is irreversible. We are not god, we are just mortals. Each one of us with our own imperfections, but in the end who are we to judge what life is worth living and what life is worth ending. And I do not think death penalty is that great of a deterent, otherwise you would see drastic differences in crime statistics between states with the death penalty and those with out.
  19. LWOP does not equal, life with out appeal. That is the difference. When you are killed, you no longer have a voice. You no longer have anything. When you are put with out parole, you can still fight for your rights and appeal the decision. If new evidence is found, then you will be exonerated. Not to mention the going rate for 1 year of wrongful imprisonment is $1mil. No amount of money will ever bring you back to life, no amount of regret, remorse. And the 1 innocent who is killed by the death penalty is to much for me. Because who will be accountable, who gets the death penalty for wrongly killing some one? They committed murder, they committed first degree murder actually. That is the worst crime in our society, and yet we as a society are willing to hand it out. That is what I dont agree with. And I understand how it feels when people talk about you when they have no clue how it is, but at the same time, have you ever been to prison? Have you ever been denied your freedom for a year, for 10 years, 50? How can you talk about what its like being a prisoner, with out first hand knowledge?
  20. The biggest problem was that they tried to create a loop hole where by they were not protected by the Geneva Convention, nor by US law. Whether or not the legislature will allow these tribunals is irrelevant, they will no longer be operating under the cloak of darkness. But then again, I have a feeling that this ruling was timed with the fact we are releasing GITMO detainees and most likely do not have that much more further use for it.
  21. Illinilaw, You havent gotten to this case but read, Michael H v. Gerald D about Parents right's in which Scalia gives the opinion. http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/f...w/michaelh.html Or the case where Scalia says that criminals do not have a legitimate expecatation of privacy. ( I dont remember this case name off the top of my head.) Although the term "activist judge" generally is only used by conservatives describing Liberal judges. But I think in reality both sides stray from the constitution when it fits their own agenda. Minors, A t-shirt with the symbol of a flag, is the same as a piece of nylon that makes the image of a flag. Both of them have nothing more connecting them to the Betsy Ross flag than the symbol they show. If I print a picture of the American flag, it is still a symbol of America, and so if I burn it, it would be basically burning a flag. Why should ti get more protection when it is in nylon or cloth form, versus when it is in any other form?
  22. Can, It still is most associated with Voltaire. No one is sure whether or not he actually said it and then she later repeated it, or whether she just was summing up his attitudes toward free speech. Thats why I said she "most likely" got it from Voltaire. Anyways off topic lol Jim, Protecting symbols are important. I mean what if god forbid some one put an american flag on a shirt, and that shirt was then sullied. What would we do as a society, when such an affront happened.
  23. Beatrice Hall most likely actually took that from Voltaire. But anyways this amendment died because a minority decided that they were going to stand up for the spirit of the constitution. I do not think this will harm many of the people who voted no, because if you look at where they are from it is mostly democrat strongholds. Anyways I will never vote for some one who voted yes for this amendment.
