QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 21, 2012 -> 08:47 AM) So many levels of wrong, so little time. Oh, I realized that when I typed it...but it stands...if we can crush peanuts to create peanut butter, we can blend/crush a steak and create steak butter, too. http://meatbutter.com/ ^^ NOT a porn site...quite surprisingly.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 21, 2012 -> 08:19 AM) And it's obviously a bad thing that people can't afford to smoke? No, the bad part comes from the loss of tax revenue BECAUSE people cannot afford to smoke. Now they'll tax something else...maybe something that's actually good for you...like bottled water. Oh, wait...already doing that, too! It never ends...
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 21, 2012 -> 08:21 AM) Actually yes, you are insisting that the entire world needs to adapt to your kid, including the ones allergic to peanut butter. Not quite how it works, but good try.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 21, 2012 -> 08:22 AM) Talk about overreaction...sheesh. It's not like they're taking away sunshine and oxygen from these kids. It's peanut butter. Last I checked peanut butter isn't some essential nutrient that is required by everyone in order to exist. If you can save some lives by avoiding it at school then so be it. Stop clinging to your guns, religion, and peanut butter! Listen you vegan crazy, how about I spread meat butter on you.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 21, 2012 -> 08:40 AM) The "both sides" argument really isn't historically valid, not with this current iteration of Congress. Like lostfan said, the use of the filibuster is unprecedented and we routinely see bills fail with 50+ votes in favor. In that frame, of course its not "both sides", since you've limited the "historical data" to one iteration of congress. As I stated, factually, Democrats also used to filibuster...just not to this insane extent, but the writing was on the wall when they started doing it years ago...the republican congress simply took it to the next level.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 21, 2012 -> 08:27 AM) Be careful. Y2HH will claim that your opinion is wrong and there is nothing wrong with iOS maps. It's all user error somehow. Why would I say that when in my previous review I said Google Maps is still superior in many regards...Apple Maps is pretty much TomTom, and I wouldn't say TomTom is on the level of Google Maps, nor is Garmin. They're ok under most circumstances, though.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Sep 21, 2012 -> 06:45 AM) Wait. Let me write this one down. Higher taxes= lower tax revenue. Got it. Would never have thought of such an idea. Someone should ask the outstanding, hard-working city council about these facts. But they are probably too busy figuring out who they will tax next. I think the issue is clearly a "gone to the well one too many times" issue. If you tax something at 1$, and you're tax revenue is 100,000,000 off that single dollar, politicians tend to think short term and say, "Oh, ok...well, if we make it 2$, we will then make 200,000,000, and all of our problems are solved!" This works once or twice, as people adapt and shrug off the increases...but when you hit a tipping point, people say, "4$ just in taxes on a product that costs 1$, seriously?! f*** that, I can order that online, or go to Indiana, or just...well, stop buying that product altogether", and suddenly the revenue stream dries up seemingly overnight. Now they're left without that money, which they relied on, because they effectively taxed people out of the market...so now they have to look elsewhere, where they will rinse/repeat the same mistake all over again.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 21, 2012 -> 06:39 AM) It's not a video but a letter. when you click the link, soxtalk changes "f***" to, well, "f***" in the address bar. change out those asterisks to the appropriate letters. Fart? Fact? Fade? Fail? Fair? Fake? Fame? Fang? ...forget it...I'll never get this. :/

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 21, 2012 -> 06:56 AM) I actually had to argue this on Facebook with a dude on someone's status about it. He said "the Dems control Congress" and I went into how the Republicans wrote it and all 53 Dems voted for it. Then someone else followed up backing up what I said and dude responded again saying "both sides are to blame." Dude. How? To be clear, in THIS INSTANCE, both sides are NOT to blame...the Republicans are. But that's one of many instances. While SS may be annoyed with the "but both sides..." counter arguments, they are, by and large, valid arguments. Sticking your head in the sand and pretending Democrats never filibuster is not only ignorant, but downright false. While Republicans have taken the filibuster bulls*** to the next level, Democrats tend to forget their "filibuster days" quite conveniently, as they practically invented the practice. In either case, it's divided the country in a way we've never seen before...and it's only getting worse.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Sep 18, 2012 -> 10:57 PM) Would anyone consider a well paying job in your field but going outside of continental USA, precisely to Afghanistan? (Hence why really well paying job) 1) Stamp a dollar value on what you believe your life is worth, and not in some fantasy world where it won't actually happen, but for real, because the odds are quite high. 2) Determine if what they are paying you exceeds that value. 3) Determine if money, even if it exceeds that value, is worth having if all it means is that you're the richest guy in the graveyard? 4) Say no thanks. 5) Go eat at McDonalds, watch some strippers and drink some beers...not because it's good for you, but because you can.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 09:14 PM) I have never offered any pretense or apology for being an asshole. I'm a pompous dick. Same.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 09:20 PM) I'm sure your attitude would be slightly different if your kid died because some random kid in class accidentally smeared peanut butter on them. Still doesn't mean I think the entire world needs to adapt to my kid. It's logic like this that confuses and annoys me. This is more entitlement minded bulls***..."my kid is sooo important that I'm entitled to everyone else having to change what they can eat/do while around them". How about no...I want no part of that. Would that be the best of situations for any parent, including myself? Hell no, of course not. But on the flip side, I don't want my kid living in a bubble wrapped world...but that's exactly what you just asked for. If my kid has some sort of deficiency to THAT insane of a degree, I'd home school them, because who's to say some kid won't bring some peanut butter to school and do it anyway just to see what happens?! Oh, that's right...nothing. In other words, there is danger out there...and if you don't want them to ever be in any potential danger, wrap them in a bubble and keep them indoors and lifeless throughout your days...but this is no alternative IMO.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 07:05 PM) Speaking of the Republicans not being able to pass s***, yesterday they killed a veterans' jobs bill (veterans have a higher unemployment rate than the average) that 4 Republicans actually wrote. Dems said "hey this is good s***! we'll all vote for it too!" Republicans filibustered their own f***ing bill (5 of them sensibly voted for it, to their credit, but couldn't break the filibuster). Including the 4 people who wrote it. Why did they do that, you ask? Well, the election is in 6 weeks, Obama would look pretty good. They made up some bulls*** reason as to why they couldn't pay for it and didn't want to add debt but this has never stopped them from any defense project, ever, and certainly didn't stop them from voting for the war they sent these veterans to. f*** them! While, I too, am sick of s*** like this...let's not pretend it would have been passed if the tables were turned in the same exact situation. This is, unfortunately, what the political landscape has become in this country. The real problem, LF, is that we've gotten older and see/understand this bulls*** now...but it's always been going on.

I have to ask, have the Sox ever "not stopped" after Hawk says dont stop now boys?! I don't think I've ever seen it. -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 05:09 PM) I know you wrote that, but we were talking about being PC. In no world was Carlin PC. We have censors because of the man. And the peanut butter thing is still f***ing stupid. Oh, by no stretch would I say Carlin was politically correct... I'm not politically correct, either...nor will I ever be. I have little to no respect for political correctness.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 05:04 PM) Yeah, but he was religiously incorrect. And I said he was politically incorrect. He was. We are talking about being politically correct. You said it's many aspects. Other than race, he was politically incorrect in every way imaginable. And I know that other races can ignore it. Is it fair? No. Cry me a river. But go ahead and ignore the fact that political correctness includes more then race, for example the topic that started this thread, if it makes you feel better about yourself. We agree. Just like it's not fair that all kids can't eat peanut butter because one kid is allergic to it. Maybe that kid should cry me a river, too. I'm not ignoring the "fact that policial correctness includes more than race", if you read the post you replied too, you'd see I actually wrote exactly that...
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 04:59 PM) But the issue isn't kids with peanut allergies grabbing a peanut butter sandwich because he feels left out. It's that peanut residue can be on the table they eat at, and get digested by the kids. Seems like a reach. If a kid is THAT allergic to something, maybe they should stay home and be home schooled...but it's absurd to have to change everything for every other kid. Peanut Butter was a HUGE part of my childhood...so I find it absolutely absurd that we now have to deny our children that same thing in school because of a few kids that -- apparently -- will burst into flames if the sun touches the skin. Shark jumped.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 04:52 PM) Right, I forgot that you are an expert in the field of political correctness. Nevermind the fact that I'm in a journalism class that's entire purpose is understanding cultures and how to be politically correct. Nope, you're the expert. No discrimination goes on anymore in the US. Political Correctness can go away, because it's not needed. I guess we can all call Obama the n-word now. I wasn't saying it's just white people who can be politically incorrect either. I know non-white commentators cross that line. Oh, and if anyone mentions comedians, you're argument sucks. Carlin was as politically incorrect as they come. Um...no. Carlin wasn't racially incorrect, and theres a difference...so no, the comedian argument doesn't suck. Political correctness isn't just one aspect of being "correct", it's many. Being racially insensitive is part of that...and that's a HUGE part of the political correctness spectrum that other races can ignore. But go ahead and ignore that fact if it makes you feel better about yourself.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 04:14 PM) No, what I said fits in perfectly. You can still teach these kids values like that to help them avoid danger. But just because you are doing that doesn't mean you can't help remove some of the dangers from their lives. Example: 1) Remember to look both ways and always cross at a crosswalk -Yet schools still regularly supply crossing guards to keep the children from getting run over by a car. 2) Scissors are dangerous -Yet schools still often require children in grads 1-4 to have those harmless plastic scissors Schools are responsible for teaching children but also providing them with a safe environment. If the school has numerous children violently allergic to peanuts, they have to assure their safety just as they have to assure anyone else. Like I said, just don't eat peanuts, OR, bring your own lunch if you have a highly specialized diet...or, the school should be able to not f*** that up and make sure the kid gets no peanuts...I don't think it's too much to ask of these people who just begged for raises... What we do instead of punish all the kids that aren't allergic to peanut butter...I just find it absurd. Today it's peanut butter for X reason...tomorrow is something else for Y reason...and before you know it, you can eat a protein tablet with purified water and nothing else for Z reason.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 04:18 PM) Also where did you read this? That seems too dramatic to be true. It's in this article: "The city expects to bring in $18.7 million in cigarette taxes this year, compared with $32.9 million just six years ago, according to city financial records." Sorry, it was 6 years...but still...that's a massive dropoff in a short amount of time. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-09...amusement-taxes
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 03:45 PM) I'm talking about the cigarette tax. But "actively f***ing" tourists over, is ridiculous. I doubt the amount will be large enough to prevent people from going to any of those things. Gas prices would make a bigger difference. White sox pricing would make a bigger difference. Chicago already reached the property tax threshold and has 10% sales tax, the money has to come from somewhere. They've already f***ed themselves on the cigarette tax...just 3 years ago they were raking in almost twice as much tax money on cigarrettes than they are now...and that's not just because the good people of Chicago decided to quit for the health benefits...but because those same people are going over the border and buying them for less, or being priced out of smoking... Hey, good for us non smokers...as I find smoking annoying...but the City was making millions per year off of it...and now that they're drying that well up, they'll have to find something else to tax. I'm sick of their tax everything mentality...especially when they pretend they do some of it for our own good. Cigarette tax: Claim because it;s bad for us. Soda tax: Claim because it's bad for us. Bottled Water Tax: Claim because it's bad for the environment...yet the other two aren't?

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 03:46 PM) You brought that example up. No, I did no such thing. I merely mentioned that these 1st-3rd graders are old enough to be taught to not talk to strangers -- OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL -- and you suddenly said strangers are entering into schools or some such nonsense?! Not the same. My point was that if we can teach them important things like crossing streets, and not talking to strangers, common safety...then they can be taught to not eat something that will kill them. They're not that dumb. The way you dismissed it like, they're just 1st-3rd graders seems to be you saying that they're too dumb to know these things...and that's simply not true.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 03:25 PM) The school also doesn't allow strangers to walk in to the school. Are they infringing on the kids rights there too? You're talking about apples and oranges now, but nice try, troll.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 03:01 PM) We are talking about 1st-3rd graders in school. These existential lessons tend to get lost when the child gets sent to the hospital. Yet they're old enough to teach about not talking to strangers...
