  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 09:43 AM) That's not actual cancer (or other chronic illness) treatment. Acute, short-term health problems are handled by ER's and walk-in clinics, not long-term health problems. If you think there's actual affordable health care access for uninsured poor and middle-class Americans for serious, non-acute medical issues, you're nuts. I never said it wasn't riddled with shortcomings and issues.
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 09:32 AM) Damn, you're right. I don't know why anyone thinks millions in this country don't have access to health care. There's so many free clinics everywhere its a wonder that any for-profit hospitals and clinics can stay in business. eta: have you ever been without health insurance and needed health care? You can spin this all you want... Free care exists, right here, right now. The issue isn't whether it exists (since it does), the issue is that it's very inconvenient, poorly located, wasteful (ER care), and takes too damn long for what would probably be a 5 minute session. A lot of this is due to uneducated people who go to ER's or doctors because they (or their child) has the sniffles. While a lot of clinics do not offer this care...there are those to do...but, as stated above, they're inconveniently located, poorly run, and when you do go to one, expect to wait 5 hours for someone to look at you for all of 5 minutes. Edit: To pretend access to free care doesn't exist is outright false. You can, however, argue it's unbelievable shortcomings all day long, and I'd agree.
  3. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 03:56 PM) Yahoo Mail has been down most of the afternoon. ...and nobody noticed.
  4. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 1, 2012 -> 06:15 PM) Uh, did you see Warrior? Tom Hardy is fine, and a quality actor. I agree...not to mention to the previous poster...Hardy is 10000x the actor/orator that Lesner is...even via an electronic voice, his actions, and pronunciation of words, and how he uses them...I'm afraid to tell you that these Christopher Nolan TDK movies are about more than just action...the cast is unbelievable...and they'd make Lesnar look like an idiot in their wake. Anyone that questions Nolan's casting is insane at this point...all the movies this man has made as of late are pure gold.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 01:06 PM) Oh come on, that quote from rep. Callton is hilarious, like a 19th century victorian getting the vapors I repeat what I already said.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 11:34 AM) what is wrong with Michigan: http://www.detroitnews.com/article/2012061...vagina--comment man I can't believe that woman had the audacity to use the word "vagina" in 'mixed company' during a discussion about women's health and reproductive rights. I don't think the use of the word vagina is what made it offensive...it was probably that she used her own vagina as an example, and inferred they were "interested" in her vagina, in specific. And anyone that doesn't realize how that could be offensive to someone is playing make believe...exactly like you are now.
  7. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 09:27 AM) as someone who works for a school, this is a very interesting product. Many applications used by the students for testing are Windows only. There is a desire by me to get more tablets into the hands of the students. But we dont have money to get iPads AND laptops. So, if I could get a tablet and a Windows PC in one, it is very compelling. The RT version (tablet version) of this product has no backwards compatibility and is locked into using Metro. Only the pro (and much bigger/more expensive version) runs full Windows 8+Metro. While pricing doesn't yet exist, they said it would be on par with ultrabooks. That would probably mean in the 1200$ range...which is expensive, but worth it for such a product.
  8. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 18, 2012 -> 11:47 PM) http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405...=googlenews_wsj A Microsoft tablet running Windows 8 on an x86 processor? If it has good enough battery, I want one. Microsoft has a few hurdles to jump with this...and they need to begin by realizing the hurdles exist. Just ask Google how easy it is to enter the tablet arena. They need this product to succeed on a mass level, and I hope it does...their fans (like the people who bought the Zune), aren't going to make this a success. To begin, they shouldn't pretend the iPad isn't a productivity tablet like I see a LOT of Microsoft fans pretending right now...it is. I see articles riddled with, "Finally a productivity tablet!". The iPad already is and MS would be doing themselves a disservice by pretending otherwise. They WILL be competing with Apple's products with this release. If you need proof of that (the iPad being used for productivity), check out all the business execs sporting them. My entire company, for example, has every executive using them. 1) As you mentioned, the Pro version needs battery life very near or on par with the Macbook Air, and the RT version needs battery life on par with the iPad. I don't see Microsoft having a problem with this...when MS does make hardware themselves, it tends to be VERY good. 2) It needs to be priced BELOW Apples offerings. Not the same...below. The RT model needs to be cheaper than an equivalent iPad, and the pro model needs to be cheaper than the MacBook Air. 3) Microsoft needs to get tons and tons of applications ready/tested and available for this. Their current offerings aren't going to cut it, especially on the RT model that has no backwards compatibility and a massive Windows app catalog. 4) MS cannot afford to overestimate peoples wish for a Windows based tablet. Most people don't care what operating system they use these days...so long as it works for what they want to get done. This goes hand in hand with #2...they need to price very very aggressively.
  9. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 18, 2012 -> 12:41 PM) he doesn't know what he's trying to do. he needs to lose the 40 pounds FIRST before he can bulk up. From the sound of his weight, more than 40.
  10. QUOTE (farmteam @ Jun 18, 2012 -> 12:26 PM) I feel at least half the sarcastic/non-serious posts on Soxtalk are not in green. I mean, he was talking about the Jesus of Nazareth and getting married, seemed design to provoke laughter.... That's the problem with text. Sarcasm can be lost on people that don't know you well. Also, it wasn't funny...so there's that.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 18, 2012 -> 10:57 AM) If you thought that was a serious post... Well, it wasn't in green so I'm going to assume it was.
  12. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Jun 18, 2012 -> 10:08 AM) No, I don't remember that because it never happened. Marriage was also never used as a way to sell off your daughter to a guy who wanted a young girl to add to his collection of wives. Marriage has always been the exact way it is now. One man and one woman uniting with each other and with Jesus of Nazareth. If you believe marriage was always the same as it is now, you need to go do some research.
  13. QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 18, 2012 -> 10:35 AM) The chances of simultaneously cutting fat and building muscle are minute unless the individual is relatively untrained, has a considerable BF %, or is on the sauce A lot of that depends on genetics, but it also has to do with diet, as in not taking in much fat while performing your workouts and doing your cardio consistently. I find cutting fat and building muscle very easy, and I'm not untrained, I don't have a considerable body fat percentage and I'm not on the sauce. It has never been hard for me.
  14. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Jun 17, 2012 -> 11:49 PM) The issue is the lack of weights/a 2nd dumbell... I was using the resistance bands in place of the pull ups and have got as far back as I can go and the resistance still wasnt enough, I could realistically do 20+ reps. Once I get a job and buy another dumbell and a pull up rack I may go back to it. Awhile back I went to join the military and I was 2% body fat away from being able to join and I was 315 at the time so I'm a big country strong guy and need something different. I wanna get BIG, right now, with the bands, I'll just tone up. The fact that I wasnt able to get any clients really put a damper on the whole p90x thing too. Guess the whole if I can do it you can do it angle didnt work. If you want to load up on muscle and get a "Brock Lesner" type look, you need to lift heavy weights, in compound fashion. I.E. with barbells, not dumbbells. While doing that, you'll want to tone up, so using a few P90X workouts in conjunction with a massive lifting regime will get you the look you are aiming for. But you cannot do just one of them to accomplish what you're attempting to accomplish. The weights will pack on the muscle size, the P90X (or cardio) will burn off some of that body fat.
  15. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 17, 2012 -> 09:46 AM) lol remember when you were trying to give P90X advice? Sorry brother, but P90X DOES work - I just had a bunch of clients finish Day 90 yesterday. Losses of 25, 35, 44 pounds. Amazing stuff. I put on almost 10 pounds of muscle myself. If it got stale, the issue aint the DVDs, it's between the ears. P90X works, but not for what he's trying to do. There is no one size fits all workout, and for his specific goal, P90X is probably the worst workout he could attempt. He wants to pack muscle. To pack muscle you hit the weights, and load up on heavy compound movements, mostly with barbells (not dumbbells). You could supplement this with a few P90X cardio workouts to drop some fat while building that muscle, but sticking with P90X when your goal is massive muscle gain is counter productive. P90X is clearly more cardio centric, which is why most people that use it lose weight and tone up, but don't pack on 30lbs of muscle.
  16. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 02:21 PM) Do you have Garmin in your jeep? I f***ing hate it. I miss my infiniti's entire electronics stack No, it's not Garmin...it's defiantly not as intuitive as Google maps, but it works without an Internet connection, which is important sometimes.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 02:11 PM) Let me clarify. Google Map's turn by turn navigation is absolutely excellent and that's what I rely heavily on. I already know they are rated the best in mapping services so the backbone/foundation for their navigation is nothing I ever have to worry about. I prefer my Jeep's built in NAV to Google's maps, because my Jeep's nav works no matter where I am, and Google's requires Internet access...I know they've done work to improve that on Android via caching, but again, they let their IOS app fall behind, so I'm glad Apple is dumping them. If I do have Internet access I love Google maps, but sometimes that's not reliable.
  18. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 02:06 PM) You might be the only person alive that doesn't recognize google as the king of maps. No, I might be the only person here not pretending there aren't viable alternatives. There are. I do like Google maps, but it's not so much better than Bing maps, or the upcoming Apple maps that I couldn't switch.
  19. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 02:04 PM) What maps does find my iphone use? Same as their current mapping app, Google Maps.
  20. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 02:00 PM) They will not top it. Google literally has cars driving around mapping streets all over the world on a consistent basis. They will not be overtaken any time soon. via So does Apple and Microsoft.
  21. QUOTE (kev211 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 01:53 PM) And Google hasn't worked on it's maps for years? I know that Google is king when it comes to maps and no other company comes close. How is Apple supposed to top it at launch by buying a bunch of companies that were worse than Google? They might top it, but it wont be when iOS 6 launches. Bing maps are also very good, too. Very, very good. Of course, you'd know that since you're an apparent map expert that has used no mapping service other than Google maps! I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about anymore. Yes, Google has good maps, very good, but they've done almost nothing new with it other than add turn by turn (Android only) over the last few years. They've FINALLY made some announcements that upcoming changes are occurring...and why? Because they know Apple is entering the market...and now they can't sit back and do nothing... Competition is good, and this is yet another example as to why. When Apple takes something seriously, and it appears they are taking this seriously, they tend to do it really REALLY well.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 01:50 PM) The numbers in this graph are not adjusted for inflation. Using the handy BLS inflation adjustor, I was able to quickly calculate that $165,000 in 2000 dollars is equivalent in purchasing power to $220,000 in today's dollars. Thus, child care costs are not out of control, they have effectively tracked inflation over the past 12 years, to within a variance of 2%. Furthermore, property taxes have, over the last 50 years, averaged about 3.5% of national income. That number has trended down slightly over time. If you can find a 2009 version it could possibly increase because of plummeting national income due to the recession, but the data does not show that there has been a substantial increase in property tax rates or collections over time, rather the data show the reverse. Some of that decrease may be due to the state of California's insane property tax system coming on line in the 1980s and screwing with the national average. Chicago property taxes have soared the last few years consecutive. In 2009, my property taxes were 1900$. They are now 3800$. That's a massive increase.
  23. QUOTE (kev211 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 01:49 PM) Sorry, but there is just no way at launch that Apple's will be better than Google's. Maybe after a year or two they will be better but without turn by turn it's going to be a downgrade at first. Apparently Google will be coming out with a maps app for iOS so this is all moot though. You simply do not know this. As I said, it's something Apple has worked on for years, and incorporates the technologies of 3 other map companies they purchased for hundreds of millions of dollars.
  24. QUOTE (kev211 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 01:37 PM) Yes, but the google maps without the turn by turn is better than the apple maps without the turn by turn. I have no way to prove this other than I doubt apple can start up a maps thing and suddenly be better than google at it. What I am saying is if I can't have turn by turn I'd rather have google maps than apple's map thing. And yes I will have to update to iOS 6 if it offers nothing I like because my OCD will go crazy if there's a one badge on the settings app Hopefully Apple allows google to put their maps app in the app store and this entire thing will be moot. What are you even talking about? You're just saying things to say them now. You haven't even used the Apple maps application, and you're making claims as to what it can and cannot do. Apple didn't "suddenly start a maps app", it's been something they've been working on for years. They also bought 2 3 mapping technology companies along the way, to incorporate their advanced map software into their own. They then signed a cross licensing deal with Yelp, to integrate all of Yelps data/reviews into their mapping software. I know people who work for Apple, and though they said this application is not yet complete, that it WILL give Google's maps a run for it's money, and is in many ways, superior. I'll have to wait to see it myself to make an official judgement...but Apple's map application looks like a full and capable replacement. Edit: As a follow up, Apple purchased C3 Technologies, Poly9 and Placebase (3 mapping companies) http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/29/apple-acquir...the-next-level/
  25. QUOTE (kev211 @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 01:15 PM) It's a negative because their maps app is going to be worse than google's there is no doubt in my mind, because nobody does maps better than google. So now they're removing google maps from my phone putting in their s***ty app and not giving me turn by turn. I don't feel the need to upgrade to the 4s or 5 when my 4 is doing absolutely perfect just for siri and turn by turn. Hopefully google puts a map app in the app store and hopefully apple allows it or I am going to be pissed. Upgrades shouldn't be downgrades to people who don't want to jump on every new generation of iPhone. Until then I guess waze will have to do. You do NOT have turn by turn now...not with the built in Google maps app...so I'm not sure what you're talking about. That and you don't have to upgrade your phone to IOS6 if it offers nothing you like.
