QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 07:15 PM) Scrutiny comes from the quality of posting. Calling out mods and admins doesnt exactly help your cause, but there is always discussion when it comes to suspending or banning people unless there is an egregious violation of the rules or someone is spamming. Fair enough.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 07:09 PM) They're human beings, Marty...it is going to happen. I hear ya, as long as it's made known.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 11:04 AM) We have problems not with people who disrespect the administrative staff - that's going to happen at any place. The problem lies in the fact that, when said staff is disrespected, the poster has usually done something leading up to that point to have broken rules previously. At that point, when the administrative staff has been called out, they typically keep a closer eye on said subject. Posters either violate the rules or they don't. Why do posters who "call out" mods come under more scrutiny than those who don't?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 06:10 PM) Funny but the Sox have more homegrown pitchers on their roster now then they did when they won the WS, and they traded for Garcia, Garland, Contreras, without giving up much at all. Dick Allen, I hope your optimistic view of things bears out.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 04:40 PM) Well, then you do it after your current, cheaper and somewhat promising options fail, not in advance of it. Besides, who's to say there won't be another Lohse-like player next year? It's one thing to stay ahead of your looming problems. It's another to cause more problems by tying up money when you don't need to. Also, the inability to afford $12M doesn't mean you need to rebuild. That's a non-sequitur. You can max out your budget with an awful team or a great one. What I don't understand is how the White Sox are going to get out of this middle-of-the-pack rut they are in without committing to a rebuild or spending their way out.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 04:29 PM) You're not even accounting for our two best pitching prospects in Johnson & Snodgress, who will both start the season in AA. There is a decent chance one of these guys could challenge for a rotation spot in 2014 if not at some point this season. Finding starters won't be a problem for us next year. The real concern for us is developing a replacement for Peavy in 2015 (i.e. a #2 starter). Maybe Johnson or Beck can put it all together and reach that level, but if not, that's an area we'll need to go outside the organization for. And if we have do, I'd rather have that $12 million to use towards a legit front of the rotation starter than an overpriced #4 starter who is getting up there in age. The White Sox will not sign a top-of-the-rotation starter on the free agent market and unless they improve the farm system drastically it's difficult to see how they will trade for one. Right now, Danks is the realistic candidate to replace Peavy as the #2.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 04:14 PM) You're replying in a thread titled "Quintana vs. Santiago". I'm not sold on either one as a starter yet.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 04:10 PM) When that system already seemingly has produced 2 starters (in addition to a ton of releivers) in the last couple years...it's not that stunning...and probably is a big sign that the "Third worst farm system in baseball" moniker doesn't really have the meaning you're trying to bestow upon it. Sale and ??
-
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 04:06 PM) Going forward, we got Quintana off the scrap-heap. It's certainly not unimaginable that we could do something similar again, for muuuuuch less than $12M/year What if they don't? $12M isn't that much for SP these days. If the Sox can't afford that they really should do a complete tear down.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 04:02 PM) And if any of them don't...then Castro, Rienzo, and a couple of the iffier-guys like Axelrod and Leesman, plus the usual Cooper Fix-em option give us a number of candidates already in the org who could step up and take that position. I don't like the odds of the third worst farm system in baseball producing three starters.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 03:35 PM) Which is why the Sox are going to be looking to the Santiagos and Quintanas of the world, instead of the Lohse's The problem is unless all three of Danks, Quintana, and Santiago prove to be capable starters the Sox are going to need at least one starter in 2014.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 02:58 PM) I agree. The White Sox's system is clearly a medieval nobleman. ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 02:52 PM) The had several pitchers contribute last year when they were ranked even lower. Your farm system ranking means nothing. The Sox have been ranked #1 and last. In the end, they seemed to get about the same out of their system. I agree there's too much emphasis on farm systems, however the Sox system is baron when compared to others in MLB.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 02:41 PM) So your suggestion for the "sustained success" you often mention is to spend big money on guys like Gavin Floyd and a 34 year old Kyle Lohse. The Sox were never huge players in big time free agents anyway, and their pitching staff has still had their share of big money guys. I don't know why free agency is the only way to acquire pitching, and most of the big time contracts handed out to free agent pitcher up until this point, have been huge mistakes. For every Maddux or Sabatthia, ther are 5 Kevin Browns or Barry Zitos. No, I prefer a tear down. Since they aren't going that way and have the 28th farm system, they are going to have to spend their way out of this middle-of-the-pack mess they are in.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 02:28 PM) This is just a terrible idea. Committing to $36 to $48 million for a marginal upgrade (at best IMO) is completely stupid. What's the going rate for starting pitching upgrades these days?
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 02:16 PM) I wouldn't describe any of your suggestions for mediocrity, saving money. Look at the money free agent starters got this year. The price of mediocrity is way up there.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 02:13 PM) Floyd isn't going to be on the southside next year. He is going to be one of the next pieces to leave to be replaced with the young pitching we have in the system. We don't have any young pitching in the system.
-
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 02:11 PM) There is no "alternative" to signing Lohse because Kyle Lohse was never an option and just a horrible idea in general. As they stand now, I think it's highly likely the Sox will need to add a starter for 2014. If they are proactive they can save money.
-
As an alternative to signing Lohse, maybe they should extend Floyd now. Something like 3y/$36M.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 01:47 PM) Giving Lohse a multi-year deal at eight figures per year is going to hang up payroll for 2014 and beyond, while Floyd doesn't. Lohse at $12M per for 3-4 years doesn't tie up the payroll. If you want a similiar pitcher it's going to cost more in 2014 and beyond
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 01:44 PM) They signed Peavy, a FA pitcher to a multi year contract a couple of months ago. Paying big money for Lohse is beyond stupid, and if you really think Boras is going to lower his price very much.......you really haven't paid much attention over the years. Lohse on the books making 8 figures is almost guaranteed to be regrettable, probably why teams that throw money around like it is nothing, and teams you have posted are so much better run than the Sox, are staying away. Peavy never made it to the free agent market. What's "big money" for Lohse?
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 01:39 PM) Under that scenario, isn't it Lohse vs. Floyd not Lohse vs. the others? I'm looking at '14 and beyond.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 01:38 PM) He was terrible in the AL, and was terrible until his last two years in STL. I wouldn't bet on that. The Sox are never going to pay for free agent pitchers who have a track record of consistently being good because those guys are too expensive.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 01:38 PM) It's not a guarantee that Lohse outpitches Floyd. And he will most definitely be more expensive. I agree, but Floyd is gone after this year. I'm looking at 2014 and beyond.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 01:27 PM) The Sox have paid a pretty penny for pitching the last 7 or 8 years. Lohse has an ERA near 5.00 in the AL and is repped by Boras so he won't be a bargain. Career year at 33 with an expiring contract is a huge red flag. I think that he hasn't signed already means he'll be a bargain. If the Sox aren't interested in Lohse at this point, I don't see them getting a free-agent SP on a multi-year deal anytime in the near future.
