  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 01:20 PM) I am not convinced that he would be better than what we could run out there, especially when you consider the loss of a draft pick and say $50 million to get him here.. He was awful to mediocre last time he was in the AL, and is leaving the one place he had success. It's unlikely that Danks, Quintana, and Santiago all perform better than Lohse. As far as losing the pick goes, it's a very week draft and signing Lohse means you can deal Floyd.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 12:49 PM) I don't like the contract it would take for a guy that seems to scream fluke. The Sox aren't going to ever be at the top end of the free agent pitching market. Lohse is the best pitcher to have (likely) fallen into their price range in some time. It would be smart of them to take advantage of it.
  3. QUOTE (YASNY @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 12:12 PM) I wouldn't sign him. I believe one of these guys will come through because they both seem to be pretty damn good pitchers, plus we'll keep the draft pick. The thing is, the price of free-agents only goes up. Lohse contract may look pretty good next year even if his ERA is 4+. A top 3 of Sale, Peavy, and Lohse over the next three years is a nice building block.
  4. QUOTE (southside_hitman @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 02:15 AM) At the end of the day, I would sign Kyle Lohse and not rely on either one of these pitchers, or for that matter, on Danks comeback being a sure thing. Too too many question marks. I'd do this too. Losing a first round pick in a very bad draft isn't enough to dissuade me, besides that could be offset somewhat by what they could get in return for trading Floyd.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 2, 2013 -> 02:49 PM) Trade value isn't the only concern with a young guy, particularly with a team trying to establish a consistent record of being a contender. Give you a comparison. Moustakas and Hosmer have had their trade values fall significantly in the last year or two...but that hasn't stopped a whole lot of people from picking the Royals to finish ahead of the White Sox this year. Olt is the same age as Moustakas and has almost 900 less MLB plate appearances, he's a year older than Hosmer and has 1,000 less plate appearances than him. If Olt is going to have maximum value for the the Rangers he's going to have to hit soon. Otherwise, I believe they have made a mistake holding on to him this long.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 2, 2013 -> 02:06 PM) Trading a guy like Olt for an expensive, unreliable piece under contract for 2 years is a high-risk way of using that system. If they're talking about "Sustained success", then some fraction of their young guys from that system have to be integrated in order to offset holding on to some of their expensive vets or making moves in the FA market. The real trick is to have it be the guy you hold onto that becomes successful and the guy you trade that is the bust. Seems to me the Rangers are taking a bigger chance with Olt than they would with Rios. Olt has to produce right away or his trade value drops and he'll have to switch positions to do that. I think it's a case where the Rangers have held on to him a year too long.
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 2, 2013 -> 01:44 PM) So you think to win this year, it is imperative for the Rangers to acquire someone of Alex Rios' ilk, and on the other hand, for the White Sox to truly be going for it, trading Rios for Olt is precisely the move they should make. Doesn't seem too consistent. I would imagine if the Rangers are hi on Olt, he actually might be the replacement in RF should they need one for 50 games. He played there a couple of times last season and has been working with one of their coaches on playing the OF. I don't think there's a bat on the free agent or trade markets currently who would be better than Rios. If they want to move Olt to the OF, great good luck with that. All I know is, were I fan of the Rangers I'd want them to use that system right now. If they keep Olt and he doesn't produce right away I wouldn't want to hear any excuses from them.
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 1, 2013 -> 08:27 PM) Honestly, I think the Rangers would just go with solutions from within. They were barely willing to trade Olt for Justin Upton, I'm not sure why they'd trade him for Alex Rios. It would be quite awesome if they did. It was going to take more than Olt to get Upton It's not been a great couple of offseasons for the Rangers, they've missed out on Greinke, Fielder, and Upton while losing Hamilton. Right now, I'd pick them behind the Angels and A's. They need to make a move with that vaunted farm system, IMO.
  9. Quintana had a 5.11 ERA, .307 BAA, and allowed 1 HR every 7 IP in the 2nd half. Hopefully, he is the pitcher somewhere between the 3.67 ERA he posted in July and 4.20 ERA he posted in August.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 1, 2013 -> 07:28 PM) Rios is in fact highly likely to outperform Olt this year. That of course is not the only thing which determines a player's trade vale. Right, Texas might not want to wait on Olt given the fact that they've been close to a title the last 3 years and not gotten there. They need help now. Forget about Olt, which prospect do you think they'd be willing to give up for Rios?
  11. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Feb 1, 2013 -> 03:32 PM) I like the wisdom in this post. I don't always trust this organization when it comes to prospects who aren't pitchers. Is Rios contract that expensive by today's non penny pitching Reinsdorf standards? Some of the adjustments made him one of the better players on the team. I'd take a chance on him being good this season. I think Rios is going to have a good year that's why I think he may very well be worth Olt. As has been said, Olt is not a sure thing.
  12. 75 starts between Danks, Quintana, and Santiago
  13. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 1, 2013 -> 11:42 AM) yes, we need this sort of press because the team needs attention That ARod is a PED user is old news.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 31, 2013 -> 08:53 PM) He's not. Not even close. He might be worth it to the Rangers though. I'm not quite sure how good Olt can be given he's already 24.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 31, 2013 -> 08:48 PM) I like the idea, but I am not sure if Rios is worth nearly that much. I hear ya. Olt's 24 which is getting old for a prospect and the Rangers might be in a tough spot for a middle-of-the-order OF bat soon. That said, the Sox would have to eat some of Rios' contract to make a deal.
  16. Rangers could use an OF bat with Cruz situation up in the air. A Rios-for-Olt deal might make sense with Keppinger moving to a corner OF spot for the time being.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 31, 2013 -> 05:33 PM) Didn't George Steinbrenner get kicked out of baseball a couple of years for doing that type of thing to Dave Winfield? Different era, back when MLB had a commisioner who wasn't an ex-owner. Besides, $114M is worth the risk of suspension.
  18. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 31, 2013 -> 11:47 AM) Yeah, that was fun having Manny on the team shortly after his PED suspension. Fun times Ramirez wasn't a failure because he was a distraction, he was a failure because he couldn't hit. If ARod can't play I don't want them to sign him.
  19. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Jan 31, 2013 -> 01:41 PM) No, the reason he's saying a voided A-Rod contract would mean he's untouchable is because he must have done something really, really bad to void the contract. MLB contracts are pretty iron-clad for the players, so there aren't many outs. The only eventuality that could lead to a voided contract is if something truly significant comes to light. I agree with Littlehurt, if the Yankees owed him $10M there'd be no talk of voiding his contract. I would not be at all surprised if the Yankees hired their own investigators to see if ARod was involved in anything that could get his contract voided.
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 31, 2013 -> 09:55 AM) eye cn red, eym naht stewpit But honestly, I dont even think it should be considered for distraction alone, much less declining skills. But you are sure the Sox suck and their FO sucks, so im not surprised. Distraction? This team is in need of any attention.
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 30, 2013 -> 06:38 PM) There's no way his cost is ever going to be justifiable for both the White Sox and Alex Rodriguez. I would bet anything on it. As Dick Allen points out, if they can void his contract, there are serious infractions and a lot of dirt is about to come out. He's still going to be out until the end of the year. And ARod has probably made around $400 million with endorsements and his contract through his career...I doubt he's going to take an extreme longshot of hitting 114 homers in 4 and a half seasons to try and break a record when his reputation is already tarnished and play for what essentially amounts to nothing for him (because $5 million is even chump change to him anymore). On top of that, the White Sox would have to assume a risk too as well as outbid other teams for his service too. I'd bet, due to his cost and baggage, he would be one of the worst plans. My opinion of course. The Sox love baggage because it drives a player's price down. Given the need at the time and under a 1-year deal I think the Sox would consider it.
  22. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 30, 2013 -> 03:51 PM) Replacing them with a 38 year old once busted recently accused again and breaking down player coming off multiple injury years is not really the best plan. Depending on his cost, he probably would be their best plan. Is he "Chicago Tough" though?
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 29, 2013 -> 08:55 AM) IMO the answers are pretty obvious. If you have nearly 100% renewal at the highest ticket prices, you are looking at the bulk of the full season packages. That means there wasn't much room for growth in the highest dollar areas because they were already sold. Those are also your highest price points, hence the names like "diamond" and "platinum" The growth is obviously coming at the 7/14 game plans, which Boyer pretty much said when he talked about people converting from buying a few individual games, to buying 7 or 14 game plans. You had almost full renewal at the higher levels, and big growth at the lower ones. The were renewed, that doesn't mean they are sold out in those areas.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 28, 2013 -> 01:40 PM) If they don't, we are looking at a 4th place team. Judging from this, you must expect much more than 80 from those three. I'd take 80 right now given Dunn's age and Flowers contact issues.
