Lindstrom is good for 50 innings, so he and Crain should split the RH set up duties. The pen could use a long man to protect against usage because Danks, Quintana, and Sale all should be pulled quickly when it's apparent that they don't have it.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 19, 2013 -> 02:27 PM) Look, being a former moderator here myself, I promise, I am not just trying to drum up s*** here...but we don't need to go down this road of censoring opinions and frustrations just because a large majority of folks don't agree or want to hear them. For whatever it is worth, I agree with this.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 19, 2013 -> 03:12 PM) My bad, I assumed you were looking at comps for Viciedo. (Edit: And I have no idea why Juan Encarnacion would show up as a comp for Dunn). In the article it compares Rios to Encarnacion, Dunn to Sexson, Beckham to Randa, Konerko to McGriff, (Viciedo to Walter Young.)

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 19, 2013 -> 03:09 PM) Richie Sexson was a really good player until his early 30's when he fell apart in Seattle. 45 HR, .927 OPS as a 28 year old. Dunn is in his early 30's though.

Juan Encarnacion, Richie Sexson, Joe Randa those are some ugly offensive comps. I'll take the Sale and Quintana comps, deal Peavy and Floyd by the deadline and put Santiago in the roation. Build around a Sale, Danks, Quintana, and Santiago rotation for 2014.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 19, 2013 -> 12:23 PM) KC has gotten better but it will take major moves by Moustakas and Hosmer for them to be serious contenders. I'm not sure what Cleveland has made themselves much better. Gave a lot of money to guys like Swisher, Brett Myers, and Mark Reynolds, the latter 2 who might be mid-season trade candidates. Minnesota, I'm not sure they're not worse. Lost span, bringing in guys like Pelfrey and Rich Harden? The Sox played .574 ball against the bottom 3 teams in the division. I don't see them playing that well against them this year.

QUOTE (bhawk99 @ Jan 19, 2013 -> 12:00 PM) Just another day and no moves from the comatose Hahn. Who's payroll is he on? Sox or Detroit? Just maybe if everything works out we can beat KC for 2nd place. Detroit . . . 88 Sox . . . . . 85 KC . . . . . 72 Cleveland 68 Minnesota 66 Looking at the 2012 win total for the AL Central, it's difficult to see where the Sox will get more wins from. Is anyone willing to wager that KC, Clev, and Minny win less games than they did last year?

QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 19, 2013 -> 10:42 AM) But... he's right. I see - not a personal attack because you believe it, explains a lot. -
QUOTE (gosox41 @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 10:02 PM) Was it over when the German's bombed Pearl Harbor? Seriously, so this year is a wash according to you. So no reason to go out to even enjoy a baseball game on a nice night. Fine. You're choice. And last year when the team was ahead of the Tigers in the summer, did you "know" they weren't going to win and decided not to go? I hope that's not the make up many Sox fans. Or after 2010 when the team finished with 87 wins and they added Adam Dunn, was it not worth giving in to the excitement and buying tickets ahead of time for 2011. Or were you one of the prognostictors who said Dunn would have the worst offensive year ever and Rios would fall apart and the Sox had no chance so why bother? Bob So .... What should be done about this?

KW left Hahn the team in the middle that KW said he didn't want to be. There's not much Hahn can do. Signing McCarthy then dealing Floyd is the one move that is reasonable to think he could have made.

2012-2013 Sox off season Catch-All thread

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2013 -> 02:21 PM) Seriously the whole "DICK" thing is a cute way of trying to play around the personal attacks thing that everyone knows is happening. Dick Allen has referred to me as a "miserable person" multiple times and nothing was ever said to him by the mods publicly . . . -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 04:59 PM) And that is why they still spend $100 million, even if they only get 85 wins and a 2nd place finish out of it - history has proven that a great sell-off and a lack of spending by the team in turn leads to a huge decrease in attendance. I think we agree then the Sox get the attendance they deserve.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 12:06 PM) Well it's a ridiculous question to ask. The burden for getting fans to the park is on the team, and the best way to do that is is to put a winning product out there .... So, yes, bottom line, if the fans don't show up, the Sox won't spend money. I agree wholeheartedly with you that the burden lies with the team to attract fans. If the Sox don't spend money the burden still lies with them to get fans in the park.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 11:45 AM) I'm assuming this is a bit of a sarcastic question. Fans shouldn't be "punished" for not showing up to the games. We've discussed before that it's not just attendance that fuels a team's income. It's a big part of it, though. I think this might be one area where we agree (I think based on some of your previous posts). Many people, especially those with families, have better places to spend their money than at a baseball game. It's just so damn expensive anymore (as is attending a Bulls, Hawks, or Bears game). The Sox did drop prices, and that will help. I suppose eventually if the fans continue to "not show up", they will be "punished" by their team not being able to go out and get those impact players that would make the team better. Careful, the media and many of your fellow Sox fans would label you a whiner for a comment like that.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 11:39 AM) Ownership spending $100 million instead of $125 million That's one answer.
-
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 09:50 PM) Ownership put a team in first place for over 100 days last season, fans didn't show up. Sox fans have as many excuses as anybody to not show up. Do the Sox need to play well to get Sox fans to buy tickets? Absolutely. But even a .500 ballclub should be around league average for attendance. What should the fans punishment be for "not showing up"?
-
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 09:30 PM) It's on both sides, 1 part needs to deliver a product people want to watch and the other part needs to show they will support a winning product. Last year the Sox were in first for what, 117 days or something like that? More fans should have been at the park than what we had. That said, a year like 2007 where we just sucked balls, I expect attendance to drop. How many more fans? What should the punishment be? Decades of Sox fans getting their brains beaten in by the media for the Cubs outdrawing us has us thinking we're bad fans. Don't succumb to it and continue to hold the ownership accountable to put a better product on the field.
-
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 07:11 PM) I dont feel like spending the time digging up specific posts, but how about these comments on recent topics: -Fans not supporting the Sox: Multiple posters found solid facts about attendance and correlations to winning/selling off players. It may be true that the Sox haven't done everything they could to put out the best team on the field, but Sox fans definitely haven't put forth their best effort to support the team. It's not a one way street on either side, both need to get better. Also, the whole moving the team comment irked me, but that was probably more just me. I don't understand the point of ragging on the fans. Those that do never give an acceptable attendance for the team's performance and what the punishment should be for not making that figure. Should the team be taken away, should we not make the postseason? Just what are they getting at? It's odd to me that people blame the customers of the business while management gets a "they are doing all they can."
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 07:13 PM) Seriously, re-read your post. You say there are many more important things than baseball... and in the same post say you can't blame fans for not making the postseason. Do you really not get the conflict in your own two sentences there? You are saying you can't blame the fans for not going, but then blame the team for not having the money to spend? You can't in the same breath make an argument for baseball being unimportant, but also expect baseball teams to spend money they don't have. Its ridiculous. Caufield's post answers this.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 06:41 PM) Marty, I used to support you and thought some of your opinions were good in a different way. Recently, you've become a complete ass. You've made some very opinionated statements and haven't backed them up well, and when people question you about them you just blame it on something else or ignore their point while continually stating your opinion without evidence. It's become a tiresome act on this board (not just you, but a lot of posters lately). I appreciate the constructive riticism Russ. What specific posts do you mean?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 06:28 PM) That's not actually true. You really should do some research before making statements like this. Perhaps I am missing a trade. If so, I'd appreciate it if you would enlighten me.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 06:09 PM) Do you ever re-read your posts after posting them? The mods are what make this board what it is.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 12:15 PM) I really liked Kenny as GM, but this is one place where Kenny failed. As general manager Kenny Williams was in charge of the distribution of assets. He made the conscious decision to put money and minor league players into acquiring major league players. He is the one who put the emphasis elsewhere, not Hahn, or anyone else. The White Sox never include significant amounts of money in trades. The organization either develops or trades for their best players. They never look at the top tier of free agents which makes it difficult to put together a team that has the ability to make the postseason when the farm system is garbage. It's telling that the $65M contract signed by Danks was the richest in club history and $52M only buys you Edwin Jackson on the open market. The next time the Sox spend $65M or more on a player Chris Sale in three years. It's going to be a tough couple years.
-
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 11:56 AM) I'm not sure what this means. If you're saying those who rag on the fans who don't support the team are the ones advocating relocation, that doesn't make sense at all. If you're saying it's the fans who don't go to the games who are advocating relocation, that's still wrong. There have been enough discussions here about the price to attend Sox game for all to be aware that it's not something everyone can do. And most who can do it can't afford to do it many times. There are plenty of ways to support a team, and attending the game is just one. Merchandise is huge. Plus with agreements with the channels that broadcast games, the teams make money when people tune in. I think it's the height of arrogance to blame fans not attending games for a team not being able to make the post season. There are many more important things to spend your money on than a baseball game.
