GT: White Sox (37-44) vs. Blue Jays (44-42) [7:10CT/8:10ET]

Playing some stupid baseball tonight. Nice to see some early runs though! -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 09:32 PM) That is the only reason people should even look at attendance honestly. I'll never get the idea of taking attendance personally, even when the numbers are right there. And obviously I don't think anyone of us would ever like to see the Sox move out of Illinois, so 5,000 fans a night would probably eventually result in that.
-
The only reason I have ever cared about attendance is the possible impact it could have on payroll. If this was like the NBA or NFL, I wouldn't even pay attention to it.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 10:24 PM) 11) If you asked 1000 casual baseball fans outside of Chicago who was the best player for the Sox over the last 15 years or so, maybe 3-5% could come up with the name Paul Konerko. I bet him and Frank are the only players anyone would name.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 08:50 PM) How does making him DH help? I agree that AVI's defense is a huge negative and a reason why he'll probably never amount to that much, but I don't know that his bat plays at DH either. That said, if their is a taker for LaRoche and it provides freedom to see if Avi can play at DH and allow us to upgrade outfield defense, I'm okay with it. I think there's a better chance of Avi turning things around as a hitter, as opposed to defensively.

Same lineup as usual tonight -
QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 06:56 PM) Honestly I was happy with the LaRoche signing but not platooning him is a crime. I'm the same, and I still think they were planning on having that player be Bonifacio if he wasn't so awful this year. A day or two after he signed, I think it was Hahn saying he could see some time at DH vs LHP. LaRoche is fine as a clean-up hitter vs RHP, but the bad fit comes in having him be a full-time starter vs LHP.
-
QUOTE (Doc Edwards Shot @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 07:51 PM) I think we should stop thinking that it needs to be a leftie and instead pursue a GOOD cleanup hitter. Leftie doesn't mean a hill of beans if the schmuck can't hit. We're now on leftie schmuck #2 in our DH spot. Someone like Kendrys Morales would have been a much better fit. He's having a good year against both LHP and RHP.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 07:15 PM) I'm fully on board with dropping Garcia like a bad habit, but I would probably give the new coaching staff (yes, new coaching staff) a crack at him in 2016 when the Sox clearly won't be contending. It's one of those things where you know where it's headed, but you have to give it every chance to succeed. I would be content with that as well. He has terrible mechanics at the plate, and when you add the bad pitch recognition, you have the ingredients for a mediocre hitter.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 07:09 PM) We have the league's worst offense and defense. However, at least the bats have a chance (even if small) to rebound even to a small degree, because some of our players have at least shown to be capable of that in the past. On the other hand, the defense with this crew is unlikely to improve, and none of the small handful of position player prospects we have on the farm are plus defensively either. How are we going to fix the defense? Trade Avi or make him the DH. Avi is down to 159th out of 164 in terms of WAR, and showing no signs of improvement. Most of his hits of late have been bloopers. Eaton's defense should improve as the season goes on, but Avi's never even had a stretch of solid defense.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 06:54 PM) Just FYI, the reason I bumped this that no one really hit upon yet was really how bad last night's attendance was. I threw Sale's in because I was bumping the thread anyway. Last night's attendance was pathetic. Goes to show you that there really was an impressive boost on Monday due to the Sale/Buehrle hype. I don't blame fans for not going. I attended the Sox/Cards game last Tuesday, and watching the Sox bat was more boring that this season of True Detective.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 04:59 PM) And who is that hitter going to be? Example of a hypothetical scenario? Probably be a better overall fit for the lineup.
-
If the Sox could get Daniel Norris straight up for Samardzija, I would be cool with that. He's one of the top pitching prospects in the majors (and close to being big league ready). I still love the idea of trading for Stroman, but I haven't seen his name mentioned anywhere.
-
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 04:50 PM) Yes and the team collapsed down the stretch and all the pundits pointed at that move as huge reason why. MLBTR says AA will deal from the ML roster though. If thats the case, I can see a deal with Navarro coming back in some sort of package for Shark. Why would Navarro be of interest to the Sox this season? No reason to dilute the Samardzija package by having him be a piece.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 04:10 PM) Dude if the Jays offer Hoffman, we should either accept before we get off the phone or hang up immediately and asssume something's wrong with him. Reports on Hoffman since he's come back have been nothing short of glowing -- he's almost definitely the top prospect in that system. Every expert also seemed to indicate that the Sox liked Hoffman more than Rodon prior to the injury last year.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 03:56 PM) This exactly. Yet Soto's been on the bench the last two games, despite performing well vs LHP.

Christopher Kamka @ckamka 28m28 minutes ago Jose Quintana is 4-8. White Sox runs scored in the 8 losses: 1-0-1-1-1-0-0-1 -
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 03:04 AM) I still think they gave up on Micah way too quickly. Was his defense really costing us a lot of runs? I really can't recall him be THAT horrible in order to sacrifice him for a .160 hitter Yes, it was on pace to be the worst of all time
-
I'm waiting for a Chicago media member to suggest Samardzija for Castro. Just say no to Castro, he's been as bad as Avi/Melky/Alexei.
-
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 02:57 AM) Hah, their "great young hitters" are going to have to do a lot better than they're doing right now if the Cubs hope to run things. It's their pitching that's carrying them. Bosio is a sensational pitching coach.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 03:54 AM) Again why would people pay hard earned money to see this crap. It is summer in a hitters ballpark they still suck. They don't even come close to hitting home runs. Maybe 1-2 fly balls to the warning track per game it seems. -

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 03:53 AM) Beckham is batting like .205, he is horrible at hitting Davidson might hit .150 in the big leagues, but if he can play solid defense and hit an occasional homer and walk, he could probably end up being just as valuable as most of these guys. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 03:49 AM) If every single batter isn't going up to Q and apologizing ferociously, they're wrong. Call up Micah and Davidson. Davidson can't be any worse than Conor and then Gordon can go back to a backup INF role. Davidson absolutely should be called up to platoon at 3rd base. Beckham's been horrible vs LHP this year. -
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 03:47 AM) The NL is terrible this year, only 6 teams with winning records and with how bad the Mets are at offense, I would be completely shocked if the Cubs aren't in the playoffs. At this point the only question is if they'll have a home game in the 1-game playoff or not. Tomorrow will be a huge game for the Cardinals. Win and they're back up 8.5. If they lose, it's 6.5 with a series vs Pitt while the Cubs get the White Sox. The Cardinals offense looks terribly lately, as something seems wrong with Carpenter.

This offense is absolutely pathetic, but of course nothing will change.
