QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ May 21, 2009 -> 06:31 PM) This deal isn't just for this year. It's for the next 4. And with the players in AA coming up soon, I think it's a deal that has to be made if given the opportunity. This isn't a mid-season, lets see if we can win this year...it's a early season pickup in a winnable division that will help the team for years to come. And what in the last 2 decade of Sox baseball has made you think our players from the minors will be close to above average in their first 2-3 years? I love Slayer more than anyone, but there will be a learning curve for these guys I'm sure. I just worry about our offense the next couple of years, and would rather we use more of the money to get a leadoff hitter, etc.

QUOTE (TitoMB345 @ May 21, 2009 -> 06:29 PM) If this deal falls through because the Sox aren't willing to guarantee the final year... ugh. As a fan, I say get this deal done, no matter the cost, and move on from there. It's not every day you have the opportunity to bring in a solid ace to anchor your rotation around for the next 3-4 years. Peavy would be a huge boost to our team, and our fan base. Do it, Kenny. Just do it. That 22 million is way, way too much.

QUOTE (jphat007 @ May 21, 2009 -> 06:24 PM) I dont think this team is good enough to come back from a 6.5 game deficit. I'm not so sure this is a good idea. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Even with Peavy, we still have a ton of holes. I really hope he declines this deal.
-
What a disappointing game. Had a chance to actually have some momentum going, and Colon and the defense came out and let everyone down.
-
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 21, 2009 -> 06:23 PM) If we had put a good showing today against the Twins, I would have to imagine that could have helped a little. We could have won 500-0 today, and it wouldn't impact his decision.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 21, 2009 -> 06:17 PM) THAT is why Wilson Betemit is always on the damned bench. A quadriplegic can play a better 3B It's time to get rid of him. You can't keep him on the roster wasting a spot. Sox really scouted his defensive ability wrong.
-
What happened? Yahoo stalled.
-
Looks like bad Bartolo showed up today. This is such a huge game for the momentum of the team, but Colon's not going to last long.
-
Pods is just a terrible base runner. He should realistically be 0-4 on the year stealing.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2009 -> 06:31 PM) I wish I still had my source at the Sox I wish we had Kona from chisox.com as a poster on this site.

Colon's on the mound. I love this lineup!

Isn't Axelrod also Konerko's agent?

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 21, 2009 -> 06:05 PM) Is Oswalt better than Peavy? I agree though, if the club is willing to take on that sort of payroll, they could be players for a good number of guys, the question is what guys become available that aren't on contending teams. With the way the economy is, I can guarantee there will be good deals to be made if we're willing to pick up contracts. That's the point I was trying to make. It's not like Peavy has a cheap contract, so I'm not going to drink drano if he declines the trade.
-
Yeah, I have no idea where people think they saw the trade was dead. Peavy wants to pitch in the NL? No s***, that's all we heard for the entire offseason. Hell, he probably just woke up a few hours ago, as the Padres were home last night.
-
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ May 21, 2009 -> 05:02 PM) then call him a coward. Jake P***y instead of Jake Peavy kinda flows though? It's too early to refer to him as this, as there's still an outside chance of him coming to the Southside.
-
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:58 PM) Enough with this, no need to continue to say this because it slips past the filter Why not? If there's someone who would rather pitch in the NL instead of play for a more competitive team in the big bad AL, that's the definition of a coward.

QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:56 PM) A lot of marquee names? I am asking you for some specifics. First, I don't see why Houston would be compelled to trade him. Second, he's not as good as Peavy. Peavy's pitched basically his whole career in one of the best pitcher's parks in league history. Oswalt, meanwhile, has had a hell of a career pitching at a park with a 315 foot fence to left field. I'm just saying that if we're willing to take on a huge pitching contract while giving up valuable resources, it's very possible there will be Plan B, C, to come. I wonder what Javy Vazquez's career stats would look like if he pitched his whole career in San Diego? He's doing damn good in Atlanta now.
-
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:52 PM) Which is why I don't think the Sox would take a PR hit if he says no. Agreed, unless he's traded to the Cubs in 2 months and acts like he's the happiest person in the world.
-
QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:49 PM) Oh really? Please name at least one other player with Peavy's track record and stuff who the Sox could acquire for less money? I am not seeing anyone. If the Sox are willing to take on that much money and willing to give up the prospects that have been mentioned, they could realistically be involved with a lot of marquee names (guys like Oswalt who could be available).
-
QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:42 PM) Good pitching is much harder to get than offensive players. See White Sox, 2005. Good starters, good bullpen, mediocre line-up. I don't see much hope for this team if they're running Buehrle and Danks and a bunch of question marks. For the amount of money we'd be paying Peavy, you can find good pitching. His contact would surely limit KW's ability to bring in "star" players to fill in some of the other holes we're going to have (right field!). There's a ton of red flags involved with Peavy, including contract/elbow issues last year/NL West/no DH anymore/Petco. Also, don't forget he rivals Javy Vazquez in terms of clutch performance.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:40 PM) I disagree. In fact, the guys on the Score thought from the beginning this whole thing was a White Sox publicity stunt. I don't agree with them, but supposedly agreeing to acquire the biggest name pitcher available is not going to hurt them. Yeah...unless Peavy declines the trade to the Sox and accepts in a heartbeat a trade to the Cubs. That's far down the road though, so no reason to worry about it yet.
-
QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:36 PM) Just keep that in mind when you see Floyd and/or Contreras pitching this season. That's fine...we still have 3-4 glaring holes on offes offensive players, so I really don't think Peavy is the missing link. There's a lot of overreaction by people right now. Peavy is good, but I wouldn't say he'd be close to being a great pitcher in the AL.
-
QUOTE (Nokona @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:33 PM) Excuse me while I hang myself To be honest, since I don't think Peavy would guarantee the AL Central for the Sox this year, I'd rather have a combination of Poreda/Richard/Hudson in 3 years than to have Peavy and his contract.
-
QUOTE (WSoxMatt @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:32 PM) The Padres and White Sox site use the same story as MLB...on all 3 sites but its one story written by Scott Merkin and Corey Brock...Peavy wants to stay in the NL cuz his numbers will rise in the hitter heavy AL I won't be sad at all if this happens. In 3 years, Peavy's going to have an albatross of a contract.
-
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:29 PM) Peavy doesnt sound like he wants to move to the AL.... No surprise...that was his status all summer. I demand that if this falls through that he's referred to as Jake Pussy from now on.
